Hello, all, and welcome to Raven's Rhymes! Here's a little bit of background regarding how we got to this point.

History

I will include a linked list of the poems created for this thread in the next post, and after that, it is off to the poetic races.

Enjoy!

52 new poems by Raven? YES!!!

I'm already loving the first one. My mind was completely blown at "That house the dead of night throughout the day". It's funny how the mood and voice of the poem speak to me right now (Minus the explicit revenge part. Maybe). I'm still trying to get important career stuff under wraps in a pretty frustrating environment, but the demands of the coming weeks and months seem almost insurmountable right now, and currently I'm also struggling with severe back aches and generally feeling pretty miserable for having so much stress and so little time... That disk sure looks tempting sometimes.

So, yeah, great job Raven, as always!

While I'm here, I might as well drop two random things that aren't going to look very good next to Raven's material, but that might at least entertain people who are passing through and looking for MtG-related things.

Here's a silly thing I once wrote for Halloween:

Spoiler

And the Shakespearean sonnet that I wrote to express how I felt about returning to Dominaria:

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. This was one of those Gatherer Random Card poems, where I go to Gatherer, hit the "Random Card" button until I find a card that inspires me, and then write a poem about it. I don't particularly like the modern art on Nevinyrral's Disk, so this poem was more inspired by the original art, which is awesome.

The revenge thing came about because I was trying to think of why somebody would use such a thing in real life, especially considering that presumably, the user could be caught up in it, also (not in gameplay, of course). When I hit on the idea of a radically imbittered character raging against the city that has - apparently - wronged him, I liked the image. I also like that this character seems to have no idea where they obtained the disk in the first place...

Nice! They are in the list now. I remember seeing them from you before. I really like the sonnet, particularly the last line. That's such a great feel for that sort of nostalgic subject matter.

Thanks, Pavor!

Oh, I totally get that, and I think you captured it really well. I just meant the poem really speaks to my current situation, but to the "general misery" parts more so than the "revenge" parts. I absolutely agree on the old card art, btw. It's not even close.

Have you ever written a poem about Magus of the Disk btw? If you need an idea for one of your other 50 poems at some point, you could use that card and turn it into an interesting contrast with your fitst poem. They made the card white for mechanical reasons, but I think it could be interesting to explore a white mage looking at Nevinyrral's works through his particular lens and wanting to use the disk for white's "draconian judgment".

I also like the new poem. The first two stanzas confused me a bit until it became clear that the poem is opening with a cicada before the transition to the actual card, but I guess that might have been intentional, and the comparison certainly works. The chess metaphor is really cool btw

And she recalls each time that she’d been kicked
;)

Yeah, I knew what you were saying. I just went into my decision-making on the revenge thing because you had brought it up. :)

I have not written a poem on the Magus yet, but I like your idea! I'll file that one away for a rainy day later in the year. Thanks!

Thanks for reading! I had originally thought to not name the poem after the card, and based on your reaction, I think I had it right the first time. I think I'll rename it.

I was fond of the chess metaphor, as well!

:D

I was proud of this one. There are certain card mechanics that just don't translate well to flavor, and kicker is one. With this poem, I sort of flavored it as the world just kicking her one time too many times. It's interesting to me that both of these first two poems wound up sharing a similar theme of a person feeling oppressed by the world around them and wanting to break out of it.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

<Roy from I.T. Crowd> MY HEART HURTS. </Roy from I.T. Crowd>

This is Scar, right? I feel like this is Scar.

This is very much Scar. This is, in my mind, a poetic interpretation of what happens after the end of Seeing Red.

I love Scar...

Thanks for reading!

Alright, this one's a little different. So, some background...

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Irish music.

:paranoid:

Okay, well, I guess there's no reason for you to know that. Anyway, it's true. So, one Irish song in particular has come up in conversation with a friend of mine recently. That song is called "Whiskey in the Jar." I particularly love the version by the High Kings. My friend is particularly fond of the Metallica cover of the song. Regardless, we got into a discussion about it recently, and I mentioned that there is another version of the story, told from the point of view of Jenny. I'll put both in spoiler blocks here, along with the lyrics:

Whiskey in the Jar - Original

Whiskey in the Jar - Jenny's Story

So, what does any of this have to do with this thread? Well, in our conversation, we sort of decided that, while it is interesting hearing Jenny's side of things, the tale is incomplete without some third perspective. Enter RavenoftheBlack.

Therefore, I present to you my lyrics for the third of the set, told from the point of view of Captain Farrell himself. Enjoy!

Whiskey in the Jar - Captain Farrell's Tale
