Best color is, IMHO, White. Three common removals, none of which suck, Healer's Hawk as the best common 1-drop and other nice creatures, good lifegain and fliers, access to best guilds.
Speking of which, IMHO, best draft guilds are Boros and Selesnya. Izzet and Dimir are okay, and Golgari suck.

Boros is very fast. And it's creatures grow big enough to eat green monsters. It also has the most removal among the guilds. And Boros Lockets take away it's biggest weakness - resource production. Boros has one strategy for all occasions - so, as an additional benefit, it's very simple to play.

Selesnya is efficent and adaptive. Against fast starts, they jam up the board with big creatures and lifegain, and, during the latgame, they win with mass pump and/or fliers and/or token engines. Against slow starts, they rush in with big creatures and pump spells, and close the game up wth, again, mass pump and/or fliers and/or token engines. Note that actual token production is optional and incedental to their plan - don't play the one-drop Marshall and Sworn Companions and Hunted Witness over good cards just because they make tokens once or twice.

Izzet is powerful but unstable. They can kill opponents out of nowhere with aggressive cards, and win the lategame easily with control cards. The first problem of Izzet is that they can't control which way their game will go - the most adaptive color combination proves to be very non-adaptive, with card selection and card draw being at uncommon or costing too much mana. The second problem of Izzet is they don't have lifegain or cheap common removal, which means that they will often fall prey to Boros or Selesnya assault. Also, they tend to run out if creatures rather quickly.

Dimir is synergistic but slow. They have all the tools in the world to win the lategame (card advantage, filtering, counterspells, hard removal, flyers, beaters, life drain, etc), and even some nice stuff to get to it - Dead Weights, Poisoners, Children of Night, Dimir Informants, Unexplained Disappearences. Their first problem is that their early cards cannot really stop the concentrated aggression - only slow it down. Their second problem is that they rely on Surveil synergy too much - answer their key pieces, and see them desperatly pray to draw their flyers - which are the only plan B for Dimir. I have won two games against Dimir due to them milling themselves out, because some people really like Disinformation Campaign and really don't like Enchanted Survealence. Don't repeat their mistake - if you run the first, also run the second.

Golgari are, IMHO, criminally underpowered. Their supposed strategy of filling the graveyard and getting benefits from it relies on a LOT on synergy. Sadly, they have NO good common enablers and ONE good common payoff. ALL of their other good payoffs are rare. Don't play Golgari, if you can. If you can't, because your first packs had phenomenal green and black cards, DON'T BUILD GOLGARI AS A GRAVEYARD DECK. Build it as a generic Black-Green Midrange deck. They have nice efficent creatures and removal. Consider splashing into white for more nice creatures and removal.

Hello everyone.
i'm new to this forum and to MTGA. I'm trying to improve my draft in GRN so i watched some draft videos on twitch. After that i followed the links in "Draft like a boss" section.
But this time, i'm in front of this pack 1 pick 1 and I don't know what to choose.

If someone has an idea about what I should pick, it'll help me for sure. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for any advice I can find around the web to improve my draft so don't hesitate to help me out.

See you later.

Not a great first pack. Being a bit of gambler, I probably roll with the power level and pick Crackling Drake despite its very prohibitive cost. My thinking is that, if played, it gives substantially more value than Severed Strands, which would be my second option. Severed Strands shows up repeatedly in the draft and can be had on like Pick 5 sometimes, so the risk isn't super high if you pass it.

Sure, you're probably only like 50/50 to find a deck that can run Crackling Drake, but the ROI is good if you do stumble into a strong Izzet shell.

Magic's a simple game, 2 people take turns playing cards and in the end Divinevert wins 2-0...

Omnispell Adept is not a good draft rare, but a cool thing to have in collection. Drake is a very powerful card, but it commits you to Izzet, hard. Dart and Severed Strands are removal, but they are crappy removal. Mesmerist and Passwall Adept are efficent two-drops, which are always good. Invert/Invent is a good combat trick and good lategame card advantage, and it's very splashable, but it requires building around.

Tough choice. I vote Invert/Invent, but Drake is also good.

Drake for collection imo - can even turn out great for your deck. If it were phantom Draft (you wouldn't keep the cards), you could pick Severed Strands (removal) or the Dimir 2/3.

Thanks to both of you.
Yes, it s a tough choice. There is one thing i didn't say earlier, i ll play in bo1, and i ll rare draft if something good for standard appears.
Crackling Drake is good, but it ll lock me in Izzet. I dont know the real value of Invert // Invent but it looks good.
I dont have any Omnispell Adept in my collection but it s not a problem.

I ll take some more time to think about it, and make my choice later.
If you accept, i can record the draft and post a link later.

I'd take Drake without thinking twice. The card like all the other UUXX uncommons is very strong, way stronger than any of the commons as well. However I've not exactly done well in drafts recently so take that with a pinch of salt.

@OP - http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.a ... 10-12-2018 I generally agree, I have the best results with Dimir and the worst with Selesnya.

Hmm. Perhaps I drafted Golgari wrong. Perhaps a "generic BG midrange deck" is a great way to go.
Also, Dimir Tempo. I have never played or seen anyone play Dimir Tempo efficently. I mean, I don't know, but it could very well be the shiz with the right approach.

But I am absolutely sure that guy drafted Selesnya wrong. It does not "require rares" to push through at all, and you don't have to play underwhelming stuff just to convoke things out.

I can also easily imagine Boros being overdrafted IRL. In Arena drafts, though, I sometimes wheeled good Boros cards. That might be it.

I had best results with Boros lately. Before the "update" Izzet and Dimir were much better.

Drake for me too, but dont think that you are married to izzet after it Picks 1 to 3 should be very open, If you are on the drakes deck then there are some cards that gain value, make sure you take a look at the Archetypes breakdown by LSV on the drafting like a boss thread, so you dont miss them ;)
good luck!

Thank you everyone.

I picked the drake and went for Izzet. I thought i recorded the draft, but the tracker didn't like the way i played this one.
Invert // Invent made the loop, so i picked it on 9th.
Pack 2 P 1 i choose assassin's trophy for constructed and Venerated Loxodon a bit later.
In pack 3 i got another drake.

And there the wins :D https://imgur.com/a/15iybUH
It s my 1st 7-X in Ravninca. Thank you again.

Good to hear. But just looking at it, you should've ran Sargent over Book Devourer.

Well my latest run is 4-2 right now having lost game 1 because I was stupid (hint: you cannot make Lazav, the Multifarious copy Hired Poisoner after Swathcutter Giant attacks to trade - and here I was laughing at all the people who lost their Runaway Steam Kins in constructed after they've taken one damage). Second loss was because I stupidly walked into a Sure Strike. Like, I had a 10/4 flyer out (with the guildgate weapon equipped) when opponent Quasiduplicates his Muse Drake leaving 3 red mana up. What imbecile attacks into that? I did, figuring that since he's already played two Sure Strikes surely he wouldn't have another.:blush:

Only just noticed I'm literally running five colors. Rare-drafting Aurelia didn't help I suppose, and she's yet to be a factor in all six games so far (although one opponent did feel pressured enough to take her with Never Happened. On the bright side, I'm now at four copies of Aurelia, and I am continuously impressed by the Selesnya tokens deck in constructed so farming the required gold to get into another draft is much more bearable.
