I dunno, I got my face beat in doing Dominaria as opposed to M19 and GRN. I think familiarity with the cards is important.
Can be rng as well, both in what you open and what you face. Did a draft, looked promising but ended up pretty poor. Maybe there was a point where I could have jumped into a different colour, I was UB and I think grabbing Adeliz P1P2 and just grabbing red cards would have really payed off but dropping black and going all in on wizards didn't seem sensible - it's just that in hindsight it'd have worked out well. I should have done something though, since the deck didn't come together.
But to then run into people who got double Shalai flyers deck or ramp into removal into Multani was just bad luck. Gonna leave it for now at 1-2, maybe I'll get lucky with some matchups later
Tymora is with me today. 7-2 with a deck that I didn't even capture. It was a Gruul deck with p1p1 Steel-Leaf whom I played once, a Helm of the Host that singlehandedly won multiple games, a Fight with Fire, Fungal Plots, some Yavimaya Sapherds.. didn't expect much, but hey, I won't complain.

Seems that the DOM draft is extremely RNG. All I keep getting are tragic Rares like Jaya's 5hitstorm and I yet have to see any of the dual color legendaries... just finished 4-3 with one of the worst draft decks in history of sealed. Azorius Voltron with some counterspells but God, did I have to work for those wins... one of my opponents had the Tytova drew like a billion cards and started casting kicked spells...

Yeah, it's a big change from the GRN Boros/Dimir routine. You want to be in the Sultai colors for the Draft itself while most collection-worthy stuff is white. Looking through the decks I posted from the last time DOM was active, those were much better than what I had yesterday. This is my lucky week, I guess. 4 Drafts, 3x 7 wins and a 4-0 in the Champions League vs one of the best teams in the world
These records won't last though. Expect fewer success posts from now.
If only there was a 5th card solution. I don't want to draft GRN now having full playsets of multiple Rares already. I wanted to try Bo3 with my gems, but.. not decided what I'll do over the weekend.
Cards in sideboard not used: another Cabal Evangel. I figured that since I did have quite some cheap removal, I'd be able to skate by against aggro until my mid-game drops came online.
- Discarding Squee to Jaya Ballard felt quite good. Same goes for eating Squee with Thallid Omnivore (only came up once though). - Major slops to Darigaaz for not being cast a single time the entire run. Like, literally never cast. - Jaya turned out to be surprisingly good the one game I resolved her, where she filtered my cards (I was color screwed, she discarded all my black cards) into an eventual ultimate. Opponent had to chump attack to get her off the board and died in two counterattacks. On the other hand, opponent was impatient with his Ghitu Chroniclers and Caligo Skin-Witches, casting them unkicked @ 5 lands. He did hold Josu Vess after I ultimate Jaya with Fiery Intervention in the graveyard though, and was one land away from casting it kicked when he died. - I must've gotten quite lucky in the run, since several opponents died with lots of lands in play and a full grip. - Or there're a lot of bad players playing and they were splashing too hard without fixing. I know after I kicked Skin Witch one game opponent discarded Invoke the Divine and the 1/3 "untap target artifact" creature, both cards I scarcely consider playable. - Of the two losses, one was to a big creature opponent enchanted with Blessing of Belzenok while I flooded out. He killed my best creature and the 6/6 chomped his way through my chump blockers and eventually life total. I drew 11 lands in 17 cards, and the only reason the game was somewhat of a fight was because I had bought back Shivan Fire with Ghitu Chronicler. The other game went a bit simpler, opponent had a lot of ramp spells into two Verdant Forces + Time of Ice. Without the saga, I'd be able to kick Verix Bladewing and kill him before he killed me; with it the tempo hit was just too high. This was the only game in the run where I could've cast Darigaaz, but by then I was dead anyway so I just conceded.
That looks sweet. Verix is a super-bomb, Eldest Reborn another card that shames most Rares in the set. I would've tried to splash for Darigaaz too, but probably with the "Modulo-split" of 8-7-3. There was an article these days by Frank Karsten about splashing in Limited, you might want to read that.

Also a nice cast of value creatures.
Karstens article basically says "don't splash if you can possibly avoid it"

Wow, splashing in Dominaria is hard. Like, in my UB double-splash (for Tatyova and Aryel) deck, I've already discarded my lone Forest or Plains to Weight of Memory, Windgrace Acolyte, and even Rona, Disciple of Gix a couple of times.
About Karsten's article, I never really considered it (beyond the general principles of only splashing for powerful late-game cards). Instead I just went, if I have two Forests and 1 Darigaaz, then I'm twice as likely to draw Forest as Darigaaz. Sounds about right! If I were splashing two green cards I'd probably play 3 Forests, just to be odds-on to draw Forest compared to green card.
EDIT: The deck went 7-2 anyway. I'm surprised, I thought it was quite bad. List below.
I don't think the two splashes ever really mattered the entire run. Yeah they converted a winning board position, but they never actually got me there in the first place (well Tatyova did once by drawing me a card, putting me from advantaged to winning, I suppose).
One opponent was splashing On Serra's Wings and Lyra Dawnbringer, subscribing to Sol77's "splash double-CC if the card is powerful enough" philosophy I imagine. Lyra never hit the battlefield before I lost. RIP.
P1P2 next draft after starting with Helm of the Host: Cast Down or Eviscerate?
Cast Down imo. It can fail you often because you need to remove a legendary, but Instant and cmc are great.
I would splash for Lyra, yes. Never had her in any deck sadly.
I had a run yesterday that started with a p1p1 In Bolas's Clutches, which I ended up only splashing for there was no blue. Don't know what they patched exactly in the bot's behavior (yes, the patch notes said GRN and DOM), but I couldn't get 3 Cloudreader Sphinx, not even one.
Ultimately I went with a 7-7-4 mana base and while Bolas was responsible for both wins, I also lost 2 because I had shiny Islands instead of Swamps.
Helm is one amazing bomb... but those two removals are amazing also... I think I would pick up the Helm, but my second choice is Eviscerate over the first Cast down... most bombs are legendary in DOM
Finished my run on the Greed draft... 7-0! this deck was just absurd
Edit: Song of Freyalise got cropped from the pic Play of the run: Opponent drop a T2 Verix, T3 puts one aura on him + one 2/2, at this rate he is swinging for lethal on T5 I go T1 the 1/3 wizard, T2 nothing T3 unkicked Gruun. He swings with both his guys and pumps the 2/2 with Run amok to kill my Wizard... he is tapped out! GG T4 I put Arcane Flight on my Gruun and cast Gift of growth Precombat swing for 20!
Had a really tilting run. Drafted UW stuff, topped with Teferi, and ended up 4-3. Every loss was down to land screw - one game at 3 lands on turn 7 (opener was 3 lands), one game on 5 blue no white, last game on 2 lands on turn 6. Not being allowed to play magic is sush a feelsbad way to lose.
Then I did a constructed and got a Teferi in the rewards. So 2 teferi's opened a couple days after I crafted the last 2 I needed for a set. Instead of being an exiting thing they're worthless since the 5th card means nothing. Not feeling good about Arena today.

I finally did a draft, 1st packs were really bad but I did get some red removal and a courser. Pack 2 I got a shalai, picked up some more removal but very weak creatures (mostly random bears) and no real bombs. So I said screw it, built an aggro deck with a low curve and 15 land and hoped the good removal suite (Shivan fire, fight with fire, sealed away, Gideon's reproach, and some more stuff) along with some combat tricks could pull it off. Result was 2-3. I flooded in all but 1 game, that I got mana screwed. Removal didn't show up (especially the last game were I drew 0). Boros felt really weak, but apart from a tatyova I let pass for the courser P1P1, I didn't see anything worthwhile pass to change colours anyway. At least I have enough gems to try out the greedy thing.
For some reason when I think MTG the first thought to come to mind isn't beautiful women.
I distinctly remember when I was a teen thinking that playing mtg was definitely not a good way to meet girls. I do however see why any minimally hot female that actually enjoys mtg and steams games would have a substantial following.
