Dimir Tempo getting some tools with Darkblade Agent and Lazav, the Multifarious.

Lazav could also potentially work in Reanimator type decks, so long as you don't care about ETB effects. Maybe some sort of graveyard toolbox deck?

Magic's a simple game, 2 people take turns playing cards and in the end Divinevert wins 2-0...

Obligatory "Dredge just got a new tool".
Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if this made a Legacy appearace (1-of in Reanimator, _maybe_ useful in Dredge).

Yes, Doom Whisperer is well above curve. Well deserving of that mythic status.

I did yesterday...NGA is just pretty dead.

Not really much else to say about it. Not many matchups it really would shine in, especially with all the exile effects running around. Best case scenario is that he'll draw you a card to replace himself when he gets shocked, if he doesn't eat a Lava Coil on the next turn.

I think you’re underselling it, but I guess we’ll see.

I kinda share Kryder's sentiment here. There's no real Crats deck and enough exile effects in the format that this probably is not as good as it sounds.

And I may be underselling it. As I stated there is a lot of exile effects available in new standard that makes this less good than it would have been a few years ago. I think it'd be great against a deck without those effects available or against decks that use sweepers to control the board state (minus settle the wreckage), but most of the time I don't think it will get the value besides replacing itself.

This COULD get better with time and new cards being added. Just my thoughts on it for the right now.

Maybe you could try selling it? I don't see everything.

The only way I’d sell it: it’s a removal magnet. And my guess is that ‘it replaces itself’ is more than sufficiently powerful for it to see plenty of play - many cards in the past have seen play on that basis alone. I think it’s going to find a home pretty easily. Are there any exile effects that are cheaper than the card? (Conversely, in case it also gets a specific deck) Are there any great sac outlets that would make this worth building with for certain? Final question, are we getting zombie tribal?

Anyway, there are tons of other cards in the set to talk about.

One selling point I thought of...he goes well with Vraska's +2 loyalty ability. And Zombie tribal is a thing, we still got one lord after rotation. But I don't think it will be anywhere near as strong as say, Knights or Goblins will be (even if they will be a thing).

It doesn't do enough for knights. It needs a cheap efficient sacrifice engine to be worth it.

I could still see it getting played in knights, as well as BG and mono B (if that’s a deck). With or without a sac outlet. That said, there may be better 3 drops, so hard to say with less than half the set spoiled.

Doom whisperer is the best target for tutor so far and could very well be the win con of the Golgari /Sultai GY deck, the card is amazing!
---
Also yay! for Mission Briefing!
M19 looks like dog **** compared to this set.
---
The Reaper is good, he could be huge un monoblack aggro if nothing else

Yep, I stated that in my original post. But is it doing anything for it over staying mono-White or going Boros? I don't currently see it, but maybe.

Doom Whisperer is just value. Probably the best creature spoiled so far IMO.

My love for Mission Briefing cannot be overstated. Really is a strong card in the right deck.

M19 IS dog poop.

Reaper is good, but it isn't GOOD. Might even be meh right now. Love to see some cards out that he would synergize with to make a cool deck with...though I don't see it until the following rotation after this one.

Whisperer seems a bit clunky to me, you pay two to scry 2, then probably want to keep something on top, so you would be paying 2 more to scry 1 which starts getting clunky.

It is Surveil, not Scry.

And if you want to keep that card on top, just wait and draw it. Then you can Surveil 2 again.

A couple of new cards spoiled...

Boros lovers rejoice!

Legion Guildmage - Not too bad. Both abilities can help out with a stalemate. Little expensive, but that is par for the course for the Guildmages this time around.

Aurelia, Avatar of Justice - Decently priced at 2RW, a nice body (2/5), grants either +2/+0 with Trample and/or Vigilance depending on its colors. And she has mentor. Highly aggressive card.

Skyknight Legionaire - 2/2 Flying Haste for 1RW isn't bad at all...especially if paired with a 4th turn Aurelia above.

Glowspore Shaman - Interesting effect. You get a decent attacker that easily dies (Golgari FTW!) that dumps cards into your graveyard like Stitcher's Supplier, but then can put a land on top of your library to fix your next turn's mana needs.

Ochran Assassin - This is the old Lure/Basilisk combo...on a 1/1 body for 1BG. Clear the way for your army or find a way to pump it to kill more creatures. Not really constructed playable IMO.

All izzet needs now is a decent sweeper and I'm sold.

Yeah, the doom whisperer is sweet, can stop lyra without breaking a sweat. I guess mono black bombs will be a thing.

And about what to tutor with invent? Banefires perhaps? Fight with fire? Nexus? Plenty of win-conish instants and sorceries.

Thoughtbound phantasm actually looks sweet to me. Drop it turn 1 as defense, then in a surveil intensive shell, it quickly becomes 5/5+ beater and wincon. Looks like a fine build-around card to me.

Yeah, this set looks like fun, some pieces are still missing though, like a decent reanimation spell (not that 5cc crap) and the aforementioned red sweeper.

The boros mentor deck could be interesting, but it looks like they're pushing midrange too much for my taste.

Yeah, Izzet and Golgari are looking real good, as well as Sultai.

I don't like Invent personally; I don't think there is a pair of cards you really want at 6-mana that you won't have multiples of in your deck you can draw into with draw spells. But that's just me...

I like the Phantasm, and having him in the opening hand will be great. But, as I said, topdecking him will feel bad sometimes. Totally worth it to play it I would say though. Quite efficient beater if left unchecked.

Most of the Mentor cards spoiled pretty much suck, but the ones that are decent/good could be used to supplement non-mentor cards. Which may have been the point. Have to see the rest of the set.

And I see what you mean about pushing midrange. Card advantage looks to be a huge part of the next standard, moreso than right now.

Knight of Autumn is a sideboard must and likely a very good main deck card.

For 3 mana, he's either:

- a 4/3 body
- Hosing enchantments and artifacts
- hosing aggro with a body and life gain

That's value for ****'ing days.
