I think it would work better after the next set where the R/B guild comes in. The mana-fixing would theoretically be there if you kept it to a red-centric base. As it stands right now after rotation this is possible but unlikely for sure.

Base red Jund will do just fine. The hybrid mana makes it less Christmas land than you would think.

Three new cards spoiled. Dunno how I feel about them. Response/Resurgence is probably the best one. Niz Mizzet is almost certainly too fragile to be worth it. Find/Finality is two pretty mediocre cards stapled together and I don't think it's versatile enough for me to really want either.

Response is a decent cheap removal and Resurgence is a good finisher, so I think it finds a home.

Assassin's Trophy is bonkers. Very nice catch-all response card. I already see my first few rares going that way.

Goblin Electromancer is a reprint. Very dangerous IIRC in the right deck.

Find // Finality might be a good sideboard card. Most likely limited fodder though.

Response // Resurgence is...interesting. Neither side seems to be doing something to really assist the other...you'd be playing it for one of the modes, not either/or. Resurgence is crazy overall though.

Sumala Woodshaper looks ok, but expensive for the body and a very limited search parameter. Not really feeling it.

Hypothesizzle is very flavorful with the set's mechanics...though not sure how good it will be, at least initially.

Yeah, Niv is uber-restrictive. Without flash and without some sort of removal protection I'd be shocked he sees any play. Cool card though overall.

I like the IDEA of Dream Eater, and he's value when you cast him, but he is expensive. Not sure if he's worth that cost.

How do I read Dream Eaters "When you do"?
When I surveil at all - in that case it could just read "Then" imho
Is there a chance to read it as "whenever" for more than 1 use?

It is just for that activation of the ability. In other words, just once upon using the ability when Dream Eater is cast.

Chromatic Lantern. "Anyone want to make a 5-color deck?"

Fresh-Faced Recruit and Sunholm Stalwart. R/W and W Aggro is looking pretty solid right about now. 2/1 and 2/2 first strike attackers is pretty decent for 2 mana.

EDIT: If Apex of Power added 10 mana of any color, I could easily see that being the basis of a combo deck, but the restriction of it being only one color stops me from being able to chain these into an easy turn 5 win.

Assassins Trophy will be a Standard staple for the next 2 years, and it will probably be the centerpiece of a Golgari or Sultai midrange deck.
This set looks quite powerful so far

Dream Eater: If only he were 5 mana instead of 6, every single Blue deck in existence would 4-of this bad boy into oblivion. As it sits, it's probably a tad too expensive for Constructed unless more cards like Narcomoeba show up (which I doubt). Amazing Limited bomb though.

Assassin's Trophy: Path to Exile anyone? This is my early pick for best Constructed card in the set, looks busted in basically any B/G/x midrange deck. Important note: It doesn't say nonland permanent, meaning you can blow up an Azcanta or Arch of Orazca with it if need be; meaining B/G doesn't absolutely have to run Field of Ruin.

Find // Finality: This was absolutely made for Limited. Both Soul Salvage and Languish are great cards here; this card is either when you need it. Probably too slow for Constructed though.

Response // Resurgence: I'm actually a lot lower on this card than Vert. My problem is the very double-faced nature of the card; if the deck that wants Resurgence ever casts this as Response they're probably losing. It might be okay if there is a R/W Mentor Midrange deck, but I kinda doubt that deck exists.

Niv-Mizzet is impossible to cast unless you have Chromatic Lantern and worse than some 4-drops I can think of.

Sunholm Stalwart is the kind of card you need if you want Mentor to be a thing; can both be Mentored on and Mentor other attackers.

Goblin Electromancer at common means they REALLY want to push Jump-Start. Doubt it'll make waves in Constructed though (Baral didn't, why should Electromancer?).

Fresh-Faced Recruit, Hypothesizzle (great name), Dimir Informant, Whisper Agent and Sumala Woodshaper look deece.

Think you guys are underrating Dream Eater.

For Draw-Go, it's a substantial body with flash with a pseudo-draw effect and a bounce effect. In a post-Torrential Gearhulk world, he's a very solid replacement.

Surveil 4 looks busted but draw go has Chromium and Teferi as finishers, as for Gearhulk replacement I think we will get some sort of Snapcaster effect on the Izzet colors

Not underrating it at all. It isn't bad, but it isn't all that good either.

It does everything you want it to do when it comes into play; bounce something, surveil 4 (really nice), flys (really nice), with flash...but it is a 4/3 body, which is not substantial in any sense of the word. Most likely way too expensive to see lots of play, at least at first.

Chromium requires Esper colors and costs 1 more. If you have the mana base to support it, yes, Chromium is better.

Teferi is an effective finisher, but also requires white, and I don't see any reason why running Dream Eater would prohibit you from Teferi as well if they fit in your colors.


Awfully hopeful to think we're getting a Snapcaster effect in Izzet colors.

Vraska, Relic Seeker, Vraska's Contept, Assassin's Trophy. That's a nice removal suite for G/B. Add on top Status//Statue and some GY shenanigans and it might be an extremely powerful deck.

If they remove it, which they'd need to do at instant speed, then it just did a whole bunch of good stuff and traded as a 1-for-1. I know everyone is terrified of it being a 6-cost, but I still see it as a very serious top-end for draw-go and also some Izzet aggro-control builds. Flash is probably one of the strongest mechanics besides Hexproof.
