Mostly I'm now just pondering who would sing Rainbow Connection.
... and cackling because Orcish is 100% crying now.

OK, so, I love *everything* about this. But, if you were going to twist my arm, and force me to pick ten things that I specifically love about it, I would first say, "ouch, that hurts," and then I would list the following ten things:

1) I love that Kahr and Aamir are singing "Two Princes," and that they're going to try to "metal up" a Spin Doctors song.

2) I love that Aloise and Beryl are doing "Light My Fire." In my head canon, Aloise is just a huge Doors fan, and has no ulterior motive in choosing this particular song. Beryl, meanwhile, just keeps getting redder, and redder, and more nervous, and more nervous, until, FWOOSH. (I imagine some perturbed faculty member in the background rushing for the fire extinguisher and muttering: "I told them 'no pyro.' It specifically says 'no pyro' on the sign-up sheet. Side note: I imagine that Beryl gets sprayed with fire extinguishers *a lot* at this school.)

3) I can't explain why, but I am having fun imagining Hush-Hush in, like, full 80s costume, with white Members Only jackets, Flock of Seagulls haircuts, and oh so much eyeliner. And, if they decide against Thompson Twins, I think they could also crush "Don't Speak."

4) The joke about Antony immediately makes me think of the Cape Feare episode of The Simpsons, where Bart thwarts Sideshow Bob by goading him into singing the entire Gilbert and Sullivan. And this means that, from now on, I just know I'm going to hear Kelsey Grammer's voice in my head whenever Antony talks. And, you know what? I'm OK with that. :)

5) Gruff's song is the best thing ever.

6) I love that Gale calls Daneera "Danee."

7) Gale would crush "Come Sail Away."

8) I love that High School AU Tryst is, like, a complete 180-degree swap from canon Tryst, and I am never going to get tired of her cringe-worthy banter. Especially her line at the very end. I laughed unreasonably hard at that.

9) There is no such thing as a bad "Hungry Like The Wolf" joke in Daneera's context. Worth the price of admission just for that. Also, "Hungry Like The Wolf" is a top-10 dance party song of all time, and anyone who disagrees can FITE ME. :)

10) Lukas not being able to choose a 50s teenage heartbreak song because none of them are sad enough is so funny it's not even fair.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Raven -- and for starting this whole rollick in the first place. This thread is better than penicillin, I swear.

OMG WHY????

And of course it's true. I don't even have to hear that song. I start getting a little misty just thinking about it.

(Also, Beryl would totally sing "Rainbow Connection," just her on stage, with an acoustic guitar that she probably doesn't actually play that well, but you know her heart's in the right place.)

Sorry, I'll try to be a bit gentler while twisting your arm in the future.

:D

1) I love that Kahr and Aamir are singing "Two Princes," and that they're going to try to "metal up" a Spin Doctors song.

As you likely guessed, I had a ton of fun thinking of songs and groups to pair with our characters. The fact that we have two princes meant that they HAD to sing "Two Princes." It's just too easy. And because there's basically no way that High School Kahr isn't a metal music/hard rock kinda guy, the "metaling up" was my compromise here.

Again, just too easy to not do. Plus, I have this great mental visual of Aloise just getting really, really into it, which I find very cute.

Ohh, I wish I'd have thought of that one! Incidentally, I considered putting Jackie up there to sing some Dylan, but it didn't feel quite right for her character. The singing, that is, not the Dylan. Dylan will always feel right for her character.

I hadn't thought of that, although I love that episode. I was just trying to think of some way for Antony to go way over the top theatre-wise. Also, truth be told, I'm a big fan of Gilbert and Sullivan.

5) Gruff's song is the best thing ever.

This was 100% the reason this story got written. The "I want a rock! I want two rocks!" popped into my head, and I knew I had to write it. The rest of this story was created as a vehicle for Gruff's cover. And Daneera's reaction to it, a simple "gross," amuses me to no end for some reason.

6) I love that Gale calls Daneera "Danee."

:D

7) Gale would crush "Come Sail Away."

Again...just too easy!

8) I love that High School AU Tryst is, like, a complete 180-degree swap from canon Tryst, and I am never going to get tired of her cringe-worthy banter. Especially her line at the very end. I laughed unreasonably hard at that.

Yeah, and all because she has horns. We're horrible...and hilarious...

Actually, considering the entire thing came from wanting to get Gruff's song in, I had a bit of a hard time ending this one, so Tryst's immature reaction to Daneera's favorite song helped me out a lot!

9) There is no such thing as a bad "Hungry Like The Wolf" joke in Daneera's context. Worth the price of admission just for that. Also, "Hungry Like The Wolf" is a top-10 dance party song of all time, and anyone who disagrees can FITE ME. :)

Funnily, I actually do prefer "Excitable Boy" to "Werewolves of London." That song is wonderfully disturbing.

10) Lukas not being able to choose a 50s teenage heartbreak song because none of them are sad enough is so funny it's not even fair.

I have to admit to being pretty proud of this one, as there's a surprising amount of things going on with it. But also, Gabrielle's tragedy in canon being reskinned as "Gabby" breaking up with Lukas is so absurd that it just amuses me.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Raven -- and for starting this whole rollick in the first place. This thread is better than penicillin, I swear.

I somehow knew this one would speak to you, Orcish! Thanks a ton for reading.

(Also, Beryl would totally sing "Rainbow Connection," just her on stage, with an acoustic guitar that she probably doesn't actually play that well, but you know her heart's in the right place.)

Daneera wrote a poem about it once...

As for Beryl's guitar-playing chops, Angelsong suggests she very much knows what she's doing!

Thank you both for reading and commenting! I love genre-flipping stories (you may recall my Sci-fi Renn & Vasilias), and Lukas felt like a story that needed to be told. I am so glad you liked it!

I love this image! And now I'm imagining that Beryl goes here because the other local high school was made out of wood.

I think I've just spent about that long laughing at this line. And this is a fantastic way to blend the canon storyline.

And now I'm imagining that Penelophine is the faculty member essentially assigned to follow Beryl around, occasionally conjuring a raincloud to float directly over Beryl's head.

I'm a very irregular presence in the M:EM as of late, but I wanted to make sure you knew I love this thread immensely. I lack the extensive knowledge of popular songs you all appear to have, but I liked a lot the choice of titles and the banter in the cover-themed Raven's piece; both the following short stories, "New Look" in particular, belong to the not celebrated enough category of AU pieces that don't seem to be particularly based on canon until the ending hits you like a freight train. How DARE you make me Feel Things! :D

Thank you all for sharing!

If it makes you feel any better, I was in my late twenties when I learned that several songs I'd enjoyed were by the Beatles. And I discovered just this week that the 80's had an identifiable sound quality.

But yes, it's still fun to think of teenagers debating songs, and OL's reinterpretations can still be a blast.

To be fair, my knowledge of popular songs begins to sputter out around the early 90s, and the engine dies out almost completely around the turn of the millennium. As I think I said earlier, I wrote that song cover piece because Gruff's parody of Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock!" popped into my head, and it was too good to pass up. The rest of that piece was just running with the premise.

Brentain wrote:

Orcish does have some very spectacular song-inspired pieces. I was just thinking about that yesterday when the song "Holy Diver" came on.

I guess I have a type or something, huh? :)

I still really, really like "Holly, Diver." I'm almost tempted to put it back up for another vote one of these days; I feel like, from what we've seen on planes like Kaladesh over the last couple years, the implied technology level in that story maybe won't strike people as problematic the way it did before?

And now I'm imagining that Penelophine is the faculty member essentially assigned to follow Beryl around, occasionally conjuring a raincloud to float directly over Beryl's head.

The best thing about this is that I can perfectly picture the expressions on both their faces. Penelophine just has that exhausted, world-weary look which I associate with her from her appearance in WotW, while Beryl looks so wet and bedraggled -- "like a drowned rat," I think Alessa says to her at one point?

OK, once again, I love everything about this. <Gary Oldman in "The Professional">EVERYTHING!</Gary Oldman in "The Professional">

Gale and her lament -- a song without words -- is heartbreaking, and, when Daneera gives her that hug, I just want to hug Daneera right back. (Their exchange there, too, about Daneera not being the hugging type, is perfect.) I also love the choice Daneera offers for the two ways they could spend the night -- the contrasting turns of phrase are perfect. :) And, of course, I love all the tie-ins to other stories, from Denner's whole canon arc, to even the quick little reference to Antine and Mari being an item at the dance.

It feels like we need some sort of combination road trip/zany caper to get Denner back -- which is great, because road trips and zany capers fight right in with our high school tropes. :D

Thanks again for another great piece, Raven! They never cease to make me smile.

It's funny, because I picture the same expression on Beryl's face here as I do on Daneera's when she's forced to go by the title "Lady Daneera, Fae Noble."

@Fractions: Interesting, seeing someone put the "athlete" back in "mathlete" with a spirited sprint. :)

The mental image this entire scene conjures is pretty hilarious. Aloise trying to be nonchalant while doing something so silly is a great image, as is a grown woman hiding in a bush. I was particularly fond of the top ten list joke, and of course, the Twins waiting around in the parking lot spells trouble for someone. Poor Antine. I wonder who convinced him to try out for the wrestling team...

I also like the implication that Jackie likely skipped lunch to avoid being seen in her uniform, which gives me this great little mental image of her going to school that day, but skipping all her classes, and doing anything she could to not be seen. It also, in a weird way, reminds me of the Simpsons episode where it is revealed that Nelson had attended space camp with Martin.

Thanks for posting!
