i'm mainly looking for the car to say 'I'm taken care of well by my parents, but i'm not spoiled, i'm out going, popular, confident.' and others will think "nice car" and "lucky." I also want the other students to be able to see the car and go "Abby's here". Abby is saving up to get the car painted a cobalt blue. She takes good care of the car, which she got for her 18th birthday so it's her dream car. Story takes place in the year 2004.

Pick a car that you like. What it says about you is irrelevant. What you say about your car is what will be relevant.

A fancy BMW seems about right. It's a make you see in "not insanely wealthy" circles, but it is one that has a certain prestige. The other option is to just have it be brand spanking new. Most first cars for teens would probably be used, having a brand new model would 'wow' people

The other option, if you want the character to have more personal attachment to this exact machine, is to have it be a hand-me-down of something cool like a classic Cadillac -- distinctive and usually considered fashionable. A classic car that she's known for a while and seen the family take good care of and keep in top order would be a much more personal statement than a new machine that's ideal for handling.

Sorry, but if you want it to say "not spoiled", I cannot help you. In my reference frame, getting a car at all when you are 18 is bordering on spoiled. Getting a cool car? Forget it. My first car was my older brother's first car, which was my parents' old car. Which was an Opel that was about my age. Having a mustang or a BMW is so far beyond my idea of a car a high schooler could have.

Based on feed back from other places I've asked, it looks like it's the mustang. I was also reminded by a friend who I was in high school with that the mustang was the "It" car for our year ( also 04)

What year did you go to high school?

Well, I graduated in '08, but I'm from Sweden, so a very different cultural reference frame.

Aaarrrgh is right.

From MY frame of reference, getting your own car in the university is a sign of great overabundance.

Want to show the coolness of parents ? Have them freely lend their car to the kid.
Want to show the caring of parents ? Have them NOT give the car to their child at all. "You'll CRASH !!! You'll definetely craaaaaash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Want to show the coolness of the kid ? Describe the parents' car as old, but changed by the kid and his friends. Maybe there's a stash of beer in there somewhere ? Maybe it's modified for casual illegal racing ? Maybe there are fishing rods of his friends lying in there ? Maybe the player always runs the CD of the kid's favorite (or even kid's own) band ?

You know what ?
The better options would be a bike, a motor bicycle, or a quadrocycle.

LA, CA here. Nobody I knew in High School (Class of '06) got a brand new car while still in HS (at least, not anything they bragged about on campus). Some drove, but almost always with rights to the family vehicle. That's part of why I suggested "A hand-me-down, but a COOL hand-me-down that the character likes"

I don't know what that second car is, but most people couldn't dream of owning it at any point in their lives, much less at a young age.

It's an 04 BMW Z4 which retailed for $33,600 (comparatively speaking a 2004 Cadillac Escalade was $55,535) and apparently had very good sells, and considering Abby's dad owns the mall*, and her mom is a marketing consultant

Which part of LA?

The postings in this thread http://www.city-data.com/forum/automoti ... -cars.html and this list has ford mustang at number 6 https://jalopnik.com/5847230/the-ten-ul ... rich-kids/

Rich kids have been buying Mustangs for years, and every time a new one comes out, you can find them in countless high school parking lots, often with window louvers tacked on for some semblance of originality. While Mustangs don't exactly speak to the black-AMEX-and-country-club rich, there's still enough upper-middle wealth in this country to support a healthy population of poseur Mustang drivers,

I should let you all know that so far the only other car that I have mentioned is a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee nicknamed "Tank" and Abby will be heading to Puerto Vallarta for spring break staying at an all-inclusive resort.

EDIT: What's the ugliest color you're ever seen on a car? I'm thinking puke green....

so, after getting hit with an idea at 4 am, and writing down the thought, which prompted the ugliest car question, I decided to help add a bit more background to Abby, that the 'Stang isn't her first car, just a birthday gift for her 18th. Her first car was an ugly used ‘98 dodge intrepid given to her by her parents on getting her Driver's license, to instill good driving behavior and responsibility.
