There should be a debate team, I think. Syl would be captain, Tey'von would be on it, the Duchess would be coaching (with Railer helping for dramatic interpretation, of course).
You're right; that's perfect for Syl. And I feel foolish for not having thought of it, considering that we've been wondering whether our little Liliana would enjoy debate.

Aurelie. And she's dragged Henri into it against his will, but he turns out to be really good when he doesn't overthink it.

I also love that Denner calls Donagut "Donny" -- I especially like it because I sort of can't imagine adult Denner doing that, but it feels like teenage Denner maybe can.

I know, right? It kind of popped out, and I was second-guessing for a while, but it's so very high school. I have the feeling that he mostly does that because that's how Donagut was first introduced to him.

"Shoot," Jackie said.

"Please don't!" Antine said. "I didn't mean it, I swear!"

:applause: I love that this works so well here, and still feels like it could actually happen in canon.

"See the unicorn, over there?" Jackie said, and she nodded in the direction of Mari Gwynn, who was standing shyly in one corner, and staring resolutely down at her hooved feet.

Oh, that's so sweet! And with that, Jackie has not only managed to one-up the class bullies, but lift up their target to new heights. Thank you so much!

Meanwhile, it appears that Antine might be better off trying a ballroom position, but that might feel odd in the type of high school dances I was never able to attend.

And, because everyone's expecting me to make a lewd pun just because Mari's a unicorn and had a horn, here's one: It's great that Antine got leied twice that night!

:rimshot:

I'm glad somebody made that joke! :D

Cheating Time

Teenage Denner reminds me so much of Anthony Michael Hall in "The Breakfast Club." Even when it seems like the cool kids are finally starting to accept him, it's really just so that they can get him to write their essay for them... :face:

(Funny story, apropos of nothing. I was reading up on "The Breakfast Club" the other day, and I didn't realize that my favorite line in the movie -- when Anthony Michael Hall admits to having a fake ID, and, when the other kids ask him why, he deadpans perfectly, "so I can vote" -- was apparently an ad-lib.)

I love the idea that maybe what's happening is that Alessa is sort of staring ahead into the possible futures where she does get Denner to cheat for her, seeing what answers he signals, and then using those answers in the actual present, so that she never actually has to ask him a question. It feels like exactly the sort of scheme she'd figure out how to pull off, and, of course, at the end of it all, poor Denner would have no idea that he'd been used.

Anyway, I love it, Raven! This thread continues to be one of the bright spots in my life. Thanks for instigating the whole thing, and for sharing another awesome story!

Well played, Alessa. The title is a little bait and switch, since she doesn't exactly use her time powers. In these kind of environments, her precognition is just priceless: plan a prank on her? Just sidestepped. Trick questions? What trick questions?

Yeah, that seems a lot like Denner to me. Much knowledge, little wisdom. That's Denner. And of course, always a sucker for a pretty face (or other attributes). Barinellos has always said that Alessa would completely take Denner for a ride, so this was my little exploration of that.

(Funny story, apropos of nothing. Good to know! I'll need to rewatch that movie. It's been a bit of a while.

I love the idea that maybe what's happening is that Alessa is sort of staring ahead into the possible futures where she does get Denner to cheat for her, seeing what answers he signals, and then using those answers in the actual present, so that she never actually has to ask him a question. I was hoping that would come through, because that's exactly what I envisioned happening. She sets up the con, and just having Denner ready for it means that she can forecast into the immediate future to see his reaction. Saves her from having to forecast all the way to getting the graded test back, you know? Denner, as you say, is none the wiser.

Still, I bet sitting near Denner during a test is a desirable position during tests...

Anyway, I love it, Raven! This thread continues to be one of the bright spots in my life. Thanks for instigating the whole thing, and for sharing another awesome story!

Glad to be of service! Now all we need is a catchy theme song. So far I've just been humming the theme to Rock n' Roll High School and replacing "Rock n' Roll" with "M:EM"...

Thanks for reading! Yeah, Alessa uses her precognition here, at least we assume she did, but not her chronomancy. As far as we know, anyway!

So, who's going to write the story about the student council elections?

:D

Is it bad that I could imagine some of the students dumping blood on themselves if they won prom royalty?

Yeah, I can see it. For some reason, I particularly see Sava as doing this in a celebratory ritual of some sort.

Ha! Great stuff, Raven! I imagined Bobber as school staff... and now that I think of it, there's nothing against it in the text :D Venn is as obnoxious as ever (I hope Daneera has Lorekeeper), and Mari talking about Antine shows some very unexpected sides of her! I'm glad Tryst has a lot of friends :) Thank you for sharing!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

Yeah, because Bobber is not currently canon, he didn't make my initial lists. But this was basically my nod to the fact that this vignette is basically derivative of Orcish's Jackie dance piece. :)

Venn is as obnoxious as ever (I hope Daneera has Lorekeeper),

Sadly, she does have Venn. First period, even! You even mentioned it in your piece. ;)

This whole high school setting lets me have people say and do things I would otherwise never have them do or say. I remember how kids talked in high school, half of the time saying things just to shock each other. And once Orcish introduced the idea that Mari might have herself a little crush on a certain raccoon colored fox friend of ours, I just had to run with it.

Also, because it literally happened in canon, I can't wait for Mari to start setting Aria up on a series of disastrous blind dates...

Thanks for reading!

At first I thought the scheme was just to get other bullies to leave Scar alone. I like your con better.

That was sort of my first thought, and it probably accomplishes that, too, with however these two are going to spin things. But once I realized that it would pretty much bring everyone to one place, it occurred to me that Jackie just wouldn't pass that up.

Thanks for reading!

The sun will burn itself out, and the universe fade into nothingness, before I will ever get tired of M:EM characters talking romance. :)

Also, because it literally happened in canon, I can't wait for Mari to start setting Aria up on a series of disastrous blind dates...

Well, now I can't wait, either! :D

Okay, so, I mean, I love basically everything about this, but, favorite bits:

“I’m not scared of a weird-eyed senior citizen who can’t even pass Reading.”

I can imagine Scar adding: "Which is not even a class!" :D

“You better call yours and tell him to start existing!”

This is a PERFECT high school insult. I looooooooove it. :D

The rumor was made all the more impressive by stating that the bully was a shark fishfolk, and had several rows of teeth for DeCoeur to knock out.

I laughed out loud at this. This is exactly the sort of thing Jackie would spread around. :)

Syl and Chardis suggested that neither of them were smart enough to find their way to the back lot in the first place.

I can hear this so clearly in my head.

“It’s not like we stole from everyone. Just the ones who deserved it. Dorn, Dantalion, Blink, The Liar, ahh!” She held up the most expensive purse she had ever seen. “My favorites, the Rulus twins!”

Scar held up Chardis’s billfold, bulging so much from the bills inside that she doubted it could fit in his pocket. “Yeah, and they call us stupid.”

Sweet revenge!

“Let ‘em,” Jackie said, grinning. “It just makes it that much easier.”

And this is perfectly, authentically Jackie. :D

Me, too!

Anyway, this was wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing, Raven!
