Daneera jumped.

“Daneera!!!”

The shriek echoed through the halls, and Daneera sighed. She closed her locker and turned around just as Aloise Hartley reached her at a run and threw her arms around her.

“I haven’t seen you all summer!” Aloise said as she pulled away. “How have you been? What did you do? Did you have a good vacation?”

“Hey, Aloise. It was good. I went camping.”

Aloise laughed. “I figured you would. So how much of the summer did you spend doing that?”

Daneera cocked her head to one side. “All of it.”

“Oh.”

“So what did you do for the summer?”

“Oh, it was great! Beryl and I travelled a lot, went on all kinds of adventures.”

“Oh, cool, you and Beryl are still together. How’s she been?”

“Really good! Are you still dating that Kerik guy? He seemed really nice when we went on that double date near the end of the year last year.”

“Yeah, we’re still together.”

“That’s great. Was he able to transfer here for this year?”

Daneera frowned. “No. He goes to that stupid boarding school and can’t actually leave. It sucks.”

“Oh, no! So he’s not going to be able to take you to Prom?”

“No, I’ll have to go to his.”

“Hmm,” Aloise said, considering. “Well, maybe Beryl and I can crash their Prom so we can hang out with you there.”

Daneera laughed. “Well, there’s a lot of time before then. Hey, where is Beryl, anyway?”

“She’s in class.”

“Class? School hasn’t even started yet.”

“Yeah, I know. But Beryl signed up for an early class before the normal school day. She was homeschooled, you know, and her sister…well…wasn’t the most attentive tutor. So she’s concerned that she’s behind the rest of the class.”

“Really? Her? She’s one of the most studious people I know!”

“Yeah, but you know Beryl. She’s a worrier.”

“Huh. So what class is she taking?”

Suddenly, a loud explosion shook the school, almost knocking them off their feet.

Aloise curled up her face in a sort of grimace. “Chemistry?”

“Uh oh,” Daneera said. “Miss Endbringer is not going to be happy.”

“Well, you know those science teachers and their labs. Um, I should maybe go make sure everything…and everyone…is okay?”

“I’ll come with you. The science classrooms are on the way to the English classes anyway, and I have English first period.”

The two took off in the direction of the blast. Aloise glanced over at Daneera’s schedule. “So who do you have for English, Mr. Venn or Mr. Lorekeeper?”

“I’m not even sure. Is there much difference?”

Aloise shrugged. “I don’t know. I have English in the afternoon. I have Lorekeeper. I’ve heard that Venn is really hot, but kinda mean, whereas Lorekeeper is really old, but nice.”

“Hmm. It looks like I have Venn. Well, I guess…oh, hey, Sharaka!”

The Viashino glanced over from her locker and smiled. “Hey, guys! Oh, Daneera, I wanted to ask you. Are you trying out for the swim team this year?”

“Ugh, no. I thought about it, but when I got in the pool for practice, Gale was in there and she was swimming circles around me.”

Sharaka and Aloise laughed, but Daneera frowned. “Literally.”

“Oh,” Aloise said.

Sharaka shrugged. “I heard Ethal’s going to be on the team, too.”

“So, yeah,” Daneera said. “That’s one contest I’m never going to win.”

“Do either of you know where Health class is?” Sharaka asked. “It’s my first class, but I don’t know where it meets.”

“That’s with Kirsh, right?” Aloise asked, and Sharaka nodded. “Top floor, I’m pretty sure. I took that last term.”

“Oh, cool. Thanks!”

"Okay, did you each bring jackets?" Jackie DeCoeur said.

Aloise Hartley held up a white demin jacket, which made the black-clad punk frown.

"We'll have to do something about the color," she said. "But that can be for later." She looked at Beryl next. "How about you?"

Beryl's cheeks turned redder than her punk friend's eyes, as she fished her garment out of her bookbag.

Jackie DeCoeur blinked. "That's a blazer," she said.

Beryl somehow blushed even redder. "I know," she said.

"I told you to bring a leather jacket."

"This is all I had."

The punk looked skeptical. "You had this?" she said. "What, are you secretly fifty years old?"

Beryl could feel the tiles beneath her feet starting to smolder, which only made her more anxious, because smoking was definitely not allowed in the bathroom.

"It's my sister's," she said.

"Is your sister fifty?" Jackie said.

"She's an important executive," Beryl said. "Can't we just use this? Won't it work?"

Jackie DeCoeur rubbed the fabric between her fingers, and cringed.

"It's, like, velour, or something."

"Velour is cool," Beryl said. "Right?"

"This is the most uncool blazer in the entire multiverse," Jackie said.

"It's from the Jaya Ballard Collection," Beryl said, defensively. "She's cool, right?"

"Maybe, like, ten thousand years ago," Jackie said.

"I think it's a cool jacket," Beryl said, in a tone that made it clear she thought no such thing, but was trying to will it to be so.

"Blazer," Jackie said.

"A cool blazer, then," Beryl said.

"It's got shoulder pads," Jackie said. "Giant shoulder pads."

"Shoulder pads aren't cool?" Beryl said, sounding nothing short of desperate.

"No," Jackie said. "Shoulder pads are not cool."

"Well, I think it's a cool jacket," Aloise said, and gave Beryl a quick kiss on the cheek. "I think it makes you look hot."

Beryl's sweater caught fire, and Aloise had to put it out.

"Sorry," Beryl said.

"Whatever," Jackie said. "Are we going to do this, or what?"

"Yes, please!" Aloise said. "So... uh... what exactly are we going do?"

"Well, for starters," Jackie said, "you spread the 'jacket' out, like so." And she demonstrated with Beryl's blazer, laying it out across the bathroom counter, with the arms stretched out to each side.

Aloise thought about saying something about the eye-rolling air quotes Jackie's tone had put around the word "jacket," but decided to ignore it. Instead, she copied her friend's demonstration with her own article of clothing.

"Now what?" Aloise said.

"Now," Jackie said, "we cut off the sleeves." And, with a flourish, she produced a switchblade from her pocket.

Aloise's eyes went wide. "You are definitely not allowed to have that in school," she said, pointing at the knife as Jackie methodically removed the sleeves from Beryl's blazer. "I am, like, one-hundred-percent sure those are against the rules."

"So?" Jackie said, as she cut the sleeves off Aloise's jacket next.

"Uh, why are we cutting the sleeves off of our jackets again?" Beryl said, holding the pieces of the dismembered velour blazer out in front of her, as though they were artifacts of the deepest mystery. "Are sleeves not cool?"

"We cut off the sleeves," Jackie said, flipping the switchblade shut with a practiced flick of her wrist, "so that we can reattach them with these." And, reaching into another of her seemingly limitless pockets, the red-eyed punk produced a handful of safety pins, which she proceeded to divide between the other two girls.

"But then why did we cut the sleeves off of a perfectly-good jacket?" Aloise said, even as she went along with the older girl's instructions. Jackie DeCoeur was a senior, after all.

"Yeah," Beryl said, looking similarly baffled. "I mean, what's the point in any of this? I mean, if sleeves are cool, then why did we cut them off in the first place?"

"And put them right back on again?" Aloise said.

"Except, like, way worse," Beryl said.

"This does seem worse," Aloise said, holding up her jacket. "They used to be stitched-on before, but, now, they're just like... this?" She ran a skeptical finger across the strange assembly of pins.

"This is much cooler," Jackie said. "Trust me."

"What if it rains?" Beryl said. "Won't the pins get rusty?"

"If they do," Jackie said, "that will make it even cooler."

"Really?" Aloise said, slipping on her newly-cool jacket.

"Really," Jackie said.

"So, we're cool, now, right?" Beryl said, donning her newly-cool jacket-blazer as well.

"Forget cool," Jackie said. "You two are bitchin'."

"I do kind of like it," Aloise said, admiring herself in the mirror.

"I do, too!" Beryl added hastily. "Bitchin'!"

Beryl couldn't say the word without blushing, which she hoped Aloise wouldn't notice. Aloise, meanwhile, did notice, which made her love Beryl all the more.

"Bitchin'," Jackie DeCoeur repeated, before taking a cigarette from her jeans pocket, and lighting it.

From somewhere above her head, a smoke detector flashed, and its siren wailed.

"Well, I better get back to detention," Jackie said, and she pantomimed checking the watch she didn't have. "I'll catch you two bitchin' babes later."

"Later," Aloise and Beryl called out in unison, as Jackie DeCoeur kicked the bathroom door open, and vanished out into the hallway.

Aloise was about to say something, when, above her head, the fire sprinkler sputtered to life, and water rained down from the ceiling.

"I hope my safety pins rust," Beryl said, with steam rising from wherever the water hit her.

"Seniors are so cool," Aloise said.

"How many years has Jackie been a senior, now?" Beryl said.

"Three," Aloise said. "She keeps failing reading."

"Bitchin'," Beryl said.
