So Wizards is launching their own Commander variant:

This Promo is only available with the Buy-a-Box promo. It's not in booster packs. It's not in Bundles. It's not in any store outside of the Wizards Play Network.

That means to get a copy of Firesong and Sunspeaker you’ll need to purchase a box of Dominaria (as usual, while supplies last), or trade with a really nice friend of yours.

R&D specifically designed this card to be Dominaria’s Buy-a-Box promo. The goal was to give something cool to casual and Commander players, yes, but we’re especially excited about its implications for Brawl.

What is Brawl?

Well, Gavin Verhey is going to tell you all about it tomorrow here on DailyMTG, but the short version is that it’s a Commander variant that uses only Standard-legal cards. It’s a ton of fun, it’s been one of the most popular “for fun” formats at Wizards of the Coast this past year, and we’re introducing it with Dominaria.

So tune back in tomorrow to learn more from Gavin about Brawl!

I like the Legendary Frame (though I feel it could have been more unique, like the Jace Spellbook frames). I hate that this is a mechanically unique promo card. Did Nalathni Dragon and Mana Crypt teach us nothing?

This is the single worst idea of the whole year and this year has had plenty of terrible ideas. Who the hell is making decisions over there.

-60 card singleton decks. (Made of Standard Legal cards.)

They keep talking about making things for the "casual player" and then introduce a new rotating format and a card that you can only get if you buy a box. Do they have a different definition of "casual"?

I like that I could make a deck for this format and then play it against regular 60 card deck when no one else has a brawl deck.

The short answer is "yes." The topic came up on MaRo's Tumblr and it basically boils down to WotC seeing "casual" players as people who really have very little interaction with the game or the community beyond buying packs at Big Box stores like Walmart and playing with their high variance amalgamated deck concoctions at home with their friends or family. Once you make the move to an online community, or visit a local game store for a FMN or just get a DCI number, you are on the path to being an enfranchised player.

MaRo's final comment on the matter was pretty much "If you know who I am, you are not a casual player."

Yeah, this does seem a lot more accessible to people who are pretty new to the game and only have standard-legal cards. To people who have collected more cards over the years and may not have many standard-legal cards, this is less accessible than normal commander, but that's fine. It's not for you, don't play it.

I have to say I'm intrigued by allowing planeswalkers as commanders. My playgroup has been looking for ways to spice up commander night, so we might actually give this a try.

So what, kitchen table doesn't exist in his world?

It does, but there's a deliniation between casual kitchen table between like a couple of siblings or friends who play with what they get for birthdays or Christmas or trips to Walmart, and enfranchised kitchen table with a group that makes theme decks, buys singles, and discusses current MTG events, personalities, or stories.

Honestly, this feels like a thing that I might do and have good fun with. I can pick a legendary, pick out stuff from the current Standard's worth of prerelease pools hanging around in my apartment and have a deck of a power level appropriate for my newly forming playgroup.

But yeah, I also kinda want this in Arena.

It probably won't pick up enough of a following to warrant precons in the immediate future, but if they ever do, I wonder what they'd be like.

I have to say I'm intrigued by allowing planeswalkers as commanders. My playgroup has been looking for ways to spice up commander night, so we might actually give this a try.

Go chase some planes instead.
I think Planeswalkers are generally received pretty poorly for EDH. They die really easily in multiplayer formats, they encourage stalling, and it's hard to build interesting strategies around a bunch of recurring modal sorceries, compared to the strategies that can emerge from triggered or static abilities on a much richer card type.

They caught on that there aren't enough colorless lands to Brawl with colorless Commanders.

Do you think there are enough non land cards to make that deck fun even if we had wastes? Kaladesh has some artifacts that care about artifacts but I feel like after 20 good cards the quality will go down fast.

I think people who want to use the new Karn as their Brawler don't much care. They just nee about 40 artifacts of various usefulness and the colorless land to make the deck would.
