Edit: Hope to play with you in Arena. I was around all the years of DOTP and The Mothership and moving our forum home here, but Duels I pretty much missed out on completely and I do not believe we have thrown down yet my good soup.

I just had a really goofy game with Werewolves. I had a decent starting hand with 3 land, 2 Lambholt Pacifist, Waxing Moon, and Howlpack Resurgence, playing second. Opp is playing Sultai Snek. My first 6 draws consisted of Waxing #2, Howlpack #2 and 4 land... but my opp doesn’t seem to have much removal. In fact, Die Young was the only spell he tried but he miscalculated when he cast it, forgetting to account for the fact that Hub was his only black mana source, so it just netted him 2 energy. That said, 2 Harvesters kept him going, especially backed with 2 Blossoming Defense which he cleverly tried to win a Pacifist with. The first one was foiled with a second Resurgence and the second by flipping via Waxing Moon #2. But it still bought him time and all the while he’s pecking at me, too. Finally on his seventh turn he has Snek, Glint-sleeve, and both Harvesters and 2 energy and is at 6 life and he crews both Harvesters and plays... Verdant Gearhulk!!! I’m at 11 with both flipped Pacifists and both Resurgence in play and just a land in hand. I do the math and am like gg, bro bc all he has to do is put 2 counters on each Harvester and Snek adds the third and takes them to 6 damage a piece. But he must have been in a defensive mindset because he put 2 of the on the Hulk, making it a 7/7 and able to kill-block my 6/6 wolves. He swings and takes me to 1, gaining 10. So I’m at 1, he’s at 16. I have 12 damage, half of which he can block. And he has certain lethal next turn. A lesser man might have thrown in the towel in the face of such odds. After all... what could possibly turn this mess around? Samut? Nope! Chandra? Nah! Collective Effort? Exquisite Firecraft? I wish! But what about the Insult//Injury I just topdecked?! Yes, actually. I cast it and swing. He goes to 4 which surprised me. I thought the damage would be doubled first and then applied to the trample but it was the other way around so I just traded one wolf for his Hulk and did 12 with the other. But thx to my flood I had plenty of mana to cast the other half from the GY dealing the last 4 damage.

Epic turnaround and free card interaction lesson: doubling damage =/= doubling power.

Nice one! I woulda totally gotten that math wrong on your swing too - makes sense laid out though.

The lesson as always: never take Flaky (or anyone really) to 1. Ever.

Ahhh I only did the wolves one, but Nomad's is probably spicier than mine. I can whip together something here.. Allies or Eldrazi hmmmmmmmm.

No, I sent wizards at the just minute. I also had an epic Wolf-off, facing down a Gruul version that got out all three heirlooms and Ulrich and then we sat for ages before they sent a giant Shrill Howler into a giant Blessed Alliance and that turned the game. It was an interesting game cause of the shenanigans I had to pull to keep Ulrich from flopping about, but it was just one too many stand offs and I wanted something more interactive.

One thing I like about the current AI is that it plays Liliana, Death's Majesty a bunch. I find it a useful exercise to consider how screwed my deck is if it comes up against one; how many resources and turns will I need to waste to get it off the board, or can I effectively ignore it and reliably win within the next two turns? Ultimately the decks I brew that don't perform well there tend to be prone to stand offs and not enjoyable for me long term. That's a lot of tribal, really.

I kinda want to try a 5 Monument deck. What happens if you shove all 5 and three trophy mages into one of those HazyMon madness decks? That'd be hilarious.

Haha good point, oh well Rot Shambler sort of does the same thing, I'll stick with what i have for now. It has some fun games where you get Cruel Reality out a bit early or Ulamog out of nowhere.

I have a version that brings in red for Vile Aggregate basically. But the mana Smothering Abom is like my fav magic card for some reason, and this deck lets that beautiful bird be herself.
