I try to host one of these each set, and boy, does Ixalan have some weirdness in it! This Rules Quiz is meant to help you in case you run into some weird situations that could occur during the prerelease. Write down your answers, and in about 24hrs I will post up the answers (I have been known to be wrong from time to time as well, but if that happens, know that I will be called out VERY quickly!), and you can see how you did! If you're reading this after the answers have been posted, please go ahead and put up your answers, then check, and let us know where you went wrong! The most helpful way to learn some of the oddities of Magic is by experiencing it, and I hope to give you a leg up for when you do. Without further adieu, let's move onto the Quiz!
Question #1: Imperial Lancer and Frenzied Raptor are attacking across an empty field, but then Bloodcrazed Paladin is cast (no creatures have yet died this turn), blocks Frenzied Raptor, and then that player casts Vampire's Zeal targeting the Paladin. Assuming nothing else happens, choose the answer that best describes what the result of this combat will be: a) Bloodcrazed Paladin deals 3 damage to Frenzied Raptor, which dies, and Imperial Lancer deals 1 damage to the defending player. b) Bloodcrazed Paladin deals 3 damage to Frenzied Raptor, which dies, and Imperial Lancer deals 2 damage to the defending player. c) Bloodcrazed Paladin deals 3 damage to Frenzied Raptor, which dies, a +1/+1 counter is put on Bloodcrazed Paladin, and Imperial Lancer deals 1 damage to the defending player. d) Bloodcrazed Paladin deals 3 damage to Frenzied Raptor, which dies, a +1/+1 counter is put on Bloodcrazed Paladin, and Imperial Lancer deals 2 damage to the defending player.
Question #2: Your opponent is at 1 life, with no creatures out. You have Pirate's Prize and Depths of Desire in hand, 2 Mountains, 2 Islands, and Makeshift Munitions on the battlefield. You've already used your land drops, so nothing you draw can help you. How can you win this turn? a) Cast Pirate's Prize. Then sacrifice a Treasure token to Makeshift Munitions, using the mana from the Treasure to power it, and deal 1 damage to your opponent. b) Cast Depths of Desire with no targets. Then tap a land to generate an additional mana and sacrifice the Treasure token to Makeshift Munitions, and deal 1 damage to your opponent. c) Say "Well, I think I got you. Concede?." and offer your hand for your opponent to concede. Hope they fall for it. d) It is not possible to win this turn.
Question #3: You have 6 cards left in your library and are attacking with 3 creatures. Your opponent casts Settle the Wreckage. After it resolves, you search your library, and to your shock and horror, half your remaining cards in your library are basic lands. You still have Vona, Butcher of Magan, lots of life, and your opponent only has a few creatures left, so you think think you can win before you would die from drawing a card from an empty library, but only if the game goes on for 5 more turns. You tell your opponent that you're not finding any basic lands to put onto the battlefield, leaving you with enough cards to survive and win the game. Was this legal? a) Yes. b) No.
Question #4: You have a Fell Flagship, Dire Fleet Captain, Daring Saboteur, and Vanquisher's Banner set to "Pirate". Choose each option that is true. a) You may tap Daring Saboteur to crew the Fell Flagship. b) You may tap Dire Fleet Captain to crew the Fell Flagship, then cast Rallying Roar to attack with both the Dire Fleet Captain and the Fell Flagship. c) You may tap Daring Saboteur to crew the Fell Flagship, then activate Daring Saboteur's ability. d) Once crewed by a Pirate, Fell Flagship benefits both from its own ability, and Vanquisher's Banner. e) Once crewed by Dire Fleet Captain, Fell Flagship benefits from the Captain's triggered ability when it attacks alongside Daring Saboteur. f) If Dire Fleet Captain crewed Fell Flagship and it attacks, but Dire Fleet Captain is destroyed by Bright Reprisal, Fell Flagship continues attacking.
Question #5: During a Two-Headed Giant game. You have an Island which is a creature with three +1/+1 counters on it due to Waker of the Wild's activated ability. Your teammate has a Bonded Horncrest. One opponent has a Vraska, Relic Seeker with 5 loyalty counters, and the other has Trove of Temptation and a Burning Sun's Avatar. Which of the following are legal attacks? Choose all that apply. a) Bonded Horncrest attacks Vraska. The Island attacks the player with Vraska. b) Bonded Horncrest and the Island attack the player with Vraska. c) Bonded Horncrest and the Island attack Vraska. d) Bonded Horncrest doesn't attack. The Island attacks Vraska. e) No creatures attack.
Question #8: How much life is lost by the end of the turn if, during a 2 Headed Giant game, you had Raiders' Wake, attacked with Vicious Conquistador, then cast Dire Fleet Ravager, while your team was at 6 life, and your opponent was at 20 life, and your opponents each had 1 card in hand?
Question #9: Is this real and official wording from the Ixalan Release Notes? "If the second ability of Revel in Riches causes you to win the game, please refrain from throwing your Treasure tokens into the air as this may distract or injure other players."
Question #10: In which of the following situations is casting Dire Fleet Ravager an automatic win?(EDIT: I thought players shared life total in Emperor, so just pretend it's like Emperor, but with shared life total like 2 Headed Giant) (a) You are playing 2 Headed Giant. Your team is at 2 life, and your opponent's team is at 1 life. (b) You are playing Emperor, and you're the Emperor. Your team is at 30 life, and your opponent's team is at 20 life. (c) You are playing Emperor, and you're one of the Generals. Your team is at 3 life, and your opponent's team is at 2 life. (d) You are playing a regular match, you are eat at 1 life, and your opponent has Rampaging Ferocidon.
BONUS: If you have and are able to cast and/or activate each card in Ixalan that cares about treasure (and you only are able to cast and/or activate each card ONCE, and they only transform if the situation from doing thisallows it to transform), how many Treasure Tokens will you end the turn with, assuming you're trying to maximize treasure token production (not trying to win the game)? Assume you get a whole turn, (you don't draw anything you can use), you start with each of these cards in hand and 20 life. Your opponent has 20 life, but only enough of any other permanent on the battlefield for any one of these cards to be cast once (they have as much land as they need), and it can be any card in the set (ex; if two cards target a creature, the opponent only has 1 creature).
#1 - (a) is the correct answer. Imperial Lancer loses double strike as soon as Frenzied Raptor is no longer on the battlefield. Come the regular damage, it's already a creature that has dealt damage during the First Strike damage step, and won't deal damage a second time.
#2 - (c) is the correct, if really crumby, answer. You are totally allowed to bluff in Magic, and you are also allowed to concede at any time. So long as you're not bribing your opponent or trying to determine a winner by other means (like flipping a coin), this is totally legal. However, your opponent is completely fine to ask to see your final card and to play it out. But let's face it, assuming you're not the kind of person to be a real jerk and steal a win this way, the real answer is (d). Give yourself a point if you answered either way.
#3 - It was indeed legal! You're not required to find cards when searching a library, even if it's obvious and known to each player that you do indeed have them. As such, you can choose to find no cards and take the win like this.
#4 - Only (d) and (e) are illegal. Crewing a vehicle is merely an activated ability, one that is activated by tapping one or more creatures with a combined power equal to or greater than the Crew requirement. However, aside from that, creatures that crew, or vehicles that are crewed, are just like normal other creatures. There's no actual "getting into the vehicle" part that connects the two after that. As such, creatures that have crewed something can still do other things (like untap and attack, or activate abilities), and a vehicle that has its crew destroyed is not stopped from attacking.
#5 - Only (a) and (b) are legal. Trove of Temptation does weird things in Two Headed Giant. In 2HG, the Trove effectively reads "Each opponent must attack your team or a planeswalker you (i.e. not you teammate) control with at least one creature each combat if able."
#6 - Yes you can! The important thing here is that Grim Captain's Call doesn't target, and so can be cast even if there's nothing in your graveyard to bring back, which allows you to cast all three spells this turn and transform Vance's Blasting Cannons.
#7 - No, you cannot. When you copy something, you only get it "copiable attributes", which is essentially just what's printed on the card. Well, if you had a Conqueror's Galleon just sitting on the battlefield, it wouldn't be a creature - it needs to be crewed for that to happen. As such, the Skinshifter copies the Galleon, but then is immediately removed from combat. Hilariously enough, if you had enough other power of creatures on the field, you could crew it, but unfortunately in this case you don't.
#8 - 21. "Each opponent" abilities in 2HG affects both "heads" separately. As such, when the Vicious Conquistador attacks, both opponents lose 1 life, meaning that they lose a combined total of 2 life. The Vicious Conquistador just deals 1 damage (its power) to 1 of them, so that's now a total of 3 life. The Dire Fleet Ravager causes "each player" to lose a third of their life, but in 2HG that means 4 players are losing a 3rd of their life, meaning that each team is losing TWO THIRDS of their life! That's 4 life from your team and 12 life (because rounding up) for your opponent's team, for a new total of 19 life lost this turn. Lastly, only one opponent is targeted by Raider's Wake and discards 1 card, causing them to lose 2 life, for a grand total of 21 life lost.
#9 - Yes. It really is. I can only assume this means you're allowed to throw them, they just think it's a bad idea. I will absolutely (not) be doing this!
#10 - None! There is no outcome here that ends up with *you* getting an automatic win! Each one results in you or your team losing, a draw, or the game not ending. You may have been tricked by (b) and (d). (b) causes your team to lose 30 life and their team to lose 14 life (due to "range of influence", the "each player" is restricted to you, your two team-mates, and your opponent's 2 generals, but not their Emperor). (d) causes you to lose, since your opponent gets to put their "deal 1 damage" trigger on the stack on top of your enters-the-battlefield trigger, meaning you lose for being at 0 life before you would both lose from being at 0 life.
BONUS: First Main Phase: Cast Pirate's Prize + 1 Treasures Cast Prosperous Pirates + 2 Treasures Cast Sailor of Means + 1 Treasure Cast Wily Goblin + 1 Treasure Cast Depths of Desire, targeting one of your creatures (let's say Prosperous Pirates) + 1 Treasure Cast Deadeye Plunderers, and activate their ability + 1 Treasure Cast Dire Fleet Hoarder + 0 Treasure Cast Ruthless Knave, activate his ability, sacrificing Dire Fleet Hoarder, getting a treasure for both their abilities + 3 Treasures Cast Prying Blade + 0 Treasure Cast Captain Lannery Storm, attaching Prying Blade to the Captain + 0 Treasure Cast Revel in Riches + 0 Treasure Cast Contract Killing targeting your opponent's Wanted Scoundrels, which also triggers Revel in Riches + 5 Treasures

What people forgot is that if your opponent's creature is a Wanted Scoundrels, you will get their treasures!

1) a Creatures only deal damage in the second combat damage step if they have double strike or didn't deal damage in the first combat damage step. Since Imperial Lancer no longer has double strike, it does no damage in the second combat damage step. 2) d You can't sacrifice one Treasure to pay both parts of Makeshift Munitions' cost, and you can't cast a spell without valid targets. I'm sure C is against some sort of tournament rule. 3) a While searching your library for a card with specified attributes, you can always choose to fail to find anything. 4) a, b, c, f C is true, even if it doesn't accomplish much. Vehicles don't care about who crewed them, unless the card specifies. 5) none I'm not entirely sure, but I think in 2HG you specify which player you're attacking, even though the result is the same in most situations. None of these attacks are legal because none of them have a creature attacking the player with Trove of Temptation. If I'm wrong, and you attack your opponents as a unit, then maybe A and B are legal. 6) Yes. Cast Dual Shot with zero targets (since it's "up to two"), cast Grim Captain's Call, which doesn't require any targets, then cast Fathom Fleet Firebrand and trigger the transform ability. This costs total, so my lands can pay for it. 7) No. As of SOI, if a creature would enter the battlefield transformed, and it can't transform, it stays where it is, so the Skinshifter will be stuck in exile. 8) 15 My opponents lose 2 life from Vicious Conquistador's trigger, then 1 life from the damage. I don't quite know how Dire Fleet Ravager works in 2HG, so let's just assume it hits each team once, taking my opponents from 17 to 11 and my team from 6 to 4. Then my opponents lose 4 life from Raiders' Wake, so they're at 7. 9) Yes. 10) a I still don't know how this works in 2HG. I've never heard of a form of Emperor where teammates share life totals. D is a bad idea because the Ferocidon's trigger will resolve first. APNAP.

I think I was remembering an old 2HG rule where a single player's life total was considered to be half of the team's life total, but it looks like they got rid of that, so Dire Fleet Ravager just makes each team lose 2/3 of their life. Good to know! I'm actually playing in my first 2HG prerelease this weekend, so I'm glad I got to learn a bit beforehand.
I guess I was also wrong about attacking in 2HG. I blame DotP for implementing it wrong.

1) A, note: The Lancer will deals its damage at the same time as the Paladin, and then when its Dino buddy dies it loses double strike, meaning it won't deal further damage during the normal combat damage step. See CR entry 702.4c 2) I think the official answer is D, but C could technically work. Unsportsman-like, but... 3) A, you always have the option to fail to find a specific type of card in a hidden zone. 4) ABC, and maybe F. It's worded a bit weird, so I'm not sure if both the flagship and the captain are attacking or if only the flagship is attacking. If only the Flagship is attacking, then Captain is an illegal target for the spell mentioned. If they're both attacking, then destroying the Captain doesn't uncrew the Flagship. 5) E, although the Island has to be tapped for mana before the declare attackers step. 6) Yes. Grim Captain's Call doesn't target anything. Dual Shot doesn't have to target anything either, because it's "up to two target creatures." Zero is a viable option for "up to two." 7) Nope. Skinshifter will be a noncreature artifact-Vehicle in the second main phase. Knave can only sacrifice creatures. 8) A total of 21 life is lost: your team loses 4 life (one third of 6 is 2, and both players lose that much life at once for a total of 4), and the opposing team loses 17 (3 total from the Conquistador, putting them at 17 for the Ravager, which will make them each lose 6 life, and then only one opponent discards a card from the Wake; 3+12+2=17). 9) Yes. 10) B and D, but the automatic win is not for you or your team. Bonus) Assuming the opponent only has one creature (as purported in the parentheses, if two cards target a creature the opponent only has one creature; technically three cards target creatures, but one of them only after it has hit the battlefield), the the maximum amount of Treasure you can accumulate in this turn is 23. Start by playing Revel and Trove. Counter Vraska with Spell Swindle to get 6 Treasures. The ETB creatures generate 4 Treasures. Destroy the creature your opponent controls, you get 3 Treasures (2 from Contract Killing, 1 from Revel). Attach Prying Blade to Lannery, attack, get 2 total (1 from Lannery's trigger, 1 from Prying Blade when she hits). Sacrifice Hoarder to Knave to get 3 Treasures. Pirate's Prize gets you 1. Cast Depths of Desire on your own Scoundrels (they give Treasure to opponent, not you), get 1. Cast Heartless Pillage after attacking with Lannery to get 1. Activate Plunderers once to get 1. And after I hit post I get to look at Jim's answers to compare them with mine.
1. A. The Lancer will lose the double strike and thus won't be able to deal its second point of damage.
2. D. You can't use sacrifice a single Treasure for two costs and you can't cast a targeted spell without all required targets. As for the concession, you can bluff to win, but you can't use the ambiguity of communication to do so. So if you said "Do you concede?" and they say "Yes, I concede", you'd win, but just "Concede?" and a shaking of hands could mean that they thought you were offering a concession instead of requesting one.
3. A. Finding cards with specific attributes is always optional. It's not necessary to lie to your opponent (just saying "I choose not to find anything" would work), but it's also permissible to lie about hidden information.
4. A, B, C (although activating it won't do anything), and F (assuming F also involves something like Rallying Roar to allow the Captain to attack). Crewing a Vehicle just means you tap some creature(s) to make the Vehicle a creature. The Vehicle doesn't care what creatures were tapped (provided they have enough total power) and is independent of its crew.
5. None of the above, technically. The only legal choice is for the Island and the Horncrest to both attack the opposing team. In 2HG, you don't attack individual players, and attacking one opponent's Vraska doesn't satisfy the attacking requirement from the other opponent's Trove.
6. Yes. Just cast the three spells. None of the spells require any targets. The cards for the Call are chosen on resolution, and the Shot could either target nothing or could target one or both of your creatures if you want it to.
7. No. The Skinshifter's ability triggers when it attacks, and the only legal target is the Galleon. So the Skinshifter will become an uncrewed Galleon and be removed from combat. It's not a creature, so it can't be sacrificed for the Knave's ability.
8. 2 from the Conquistador, plus 1 from the combat damage, putting them at 17. Then each opponent loses 6 life, putting them at 5, while you and your teammate each lose 2 life, putting you at 2. I just realized something: I answered 5 under the assumption the Waker that animated the Island was no longer on the battlefield, but the question doesn't specify whether it is still on the battlefield or not.
Question #1: b) Bloodcrazed Paladin deals 3 damage to Frenzied Raptor, which dies, and Imperial Lancer deals 2 damage to the defending player. When First Strike combat damage rolls around, the raptor bites it and the Lancer, which has Double Strike, deals 1. When regular combat damage rolls around, the Lancer doesn't have First Strike, and so assigns damage. I admit I'm less than 100% on whether or not losing Double Strike (or first strike, it could happen) mid-combat results in the creature "remembering" it's already dealt damage.
Question #2: d) It is not possible to win this turn. A&B are blatantly false and C is poor sportsmanship.
Question #3: a) Yes. If you search for {quality} you can fail to find it.
Question #4: A, B, C (but it's useless), and F are all true.
Question #5: I believe none of those are legal since the Island can't avoid attacking Trove Player.
Question #6: Assuming I can't cast whatever Vance's exiled... yes. Grin Captain's Call doesn't target so I can just cast everything with my 6 mana.
Question #7: Not unless you crew it.
Question #8: 2 from attack trigger, 1 from combat damage, 2 of your life (1 from each player) and 6 (3 from each player) opponent life from Dire Fleet, then 4 from wake for a total life loss of 15. But then I', kinda mystified about 2hg.
Question #9: I don't know but it's true anyway and it does sound like the kind of cheeky thing they slip in like "Your opponents can't even. We know."
Question #10: I think it's none of the above which shows I'm useless with shared life rules.
BONUS: Cast Lannery Storm. Cast Prying Blade and equip it to storm. Attack, connecting for 2 treasures. Cast depths of Desire on Storm since ETB won't help with the once-and-only-once rule. If I can reallocate resources, that's a little different. (3 treasure). Cast Pirate's Prize (4 Treasures). Cast Wily Goblin (5 Treasures). Cast Prosperous Pirates (7 Treasures), Cast Sailor of Means (8 Treasures). What people forgot is that if your opponent's creature is a Wanted Scoundrels, you will get their treasures!

Thanks Jim! I've always enjoyed putting these up. It's just a fun way to get pumped for the new set. I love seeing card interactions. I might not be that great at coming up with good ones, but I think this set's quiz has more spots to trip people up than before. Got #5 wrong; attacking either team-mate will satisfy Trove of Temptation, but it gets weird with planeswalkers (see answers).
Got #7 right, but for wrong reasons, so minus 0.5. Skinshifter is removed from combat after becoming a vehicle. However, if it copied a creature with an attack trigger (when CARDNAME attacks), then it won't gain that trigger, since by the point it becomes that creature, it's already attacking and moved past the point that would allow that ability to trigger. In this case, the vehicle has already attacked, so there's no trigger that will try to exile it.
Got #8 wrong. In 2HG, each team is composed of multiple players with a shared life total, so each team-mate loses a third of their life (rounded up). So, while at 17 life, each player on their team will lose 6 life, for a total of 12 life lost between them. Your team goes from 6 to 2 respectively. You got Raider's Wake reverse; it'll only target one opponent, so only one of them will discard a card, and only that player will lose 2 life.

Got #5 wrong; and I really am curious what your thought process on this was! Good call that you can tap your island to help prevent your team from making any attacks. However, there are some attacks in this situation that are legal.

Got Bonus wrong. By discounting your opponent's involvement (making their 1 creature a Wanted Scoundrels), you missed out on 2 Treasures. Also, you said casting Depths of Desire on Scoundrels will give your opponent 2 treasures, but that only triggers if they die, not if they're bounced, though that has no effect on the outcome here.

Got #1 incorrect. A creature deals first strike damage if it has first strike or double strike. A creature deals normal damage if it didn't deal damage during the first strike damage step AND it doesn't have double strike. So if for some reason something gets First Strike or Double Strike, deals damage, and then loses it, it still doesn't deal normal damage again!
Got #5 incorrect. You just need to attack their team when they have a Trove... but you must attack a player in that team, and not a planeswalker controlled by a player other than the one with Trove. It's super weird but makes better sense when you read adeyke's explanation that I've put into the answers.
Got #7 correct... but got the explanation wrong. Half point. If you crew it, it still won't be attacking as it's already been removed from combat because it tried to be an attacking non-creature permanent.
Got #8 incorrect. You each lose a third of your life, rather than your team losing a third of its life split evenly between you.
Got #10 correct! You are definitely not useless!
Bonus: You could've killed an opponent's Wanted Scoundrels by making that their creature, giving you 2 treasures from it. Great attempt though!

Your explanation isn't right. There is no "attacking you" or "attacking your teammate". There's just "attacking your team". So in 2HG, the Trove effectively reads "Each opponent must attack your team or a planeswalker you (i.e. not you teammate) control with at least one creature each combat if able."
