Last night with Life Come at you Fast. Opening hand is 3 Land, Sram, Lone Rider, Harvester and Blue Cartouche.

I get off to a good start and flip the and have Cartouche on Sram. Drew some land and the White Cartouche.

Than I get Dusked. No problem, I have a Blue and White Cartouche by this time, and think I can recover when I draw a creature.

T1 w/o Creature - Draw 2nd White Cartouche
T2 Draw Blue Cartouche
T3 Draw Land
T4 Draw Trial
T5 Draw 3rd White Cartouche
T6 Draw 4th White Cartouche
T7 There was no T7

Wish I would have streamed it because it was fairly humorous. :P

Overall, deck is very good. Even got Infiltrator to work w/ Copter. I was even throwing Thalia to it just for the free tokens.

See, I'm always wondering how Barney manages to have like a 90% win rate piloting his better decks, cause how do you manage to not get randomly screwed more frequently than that no matter what you're running?

Same. I swear, I assume out of 10 games I will lose 1-2 due to mana screw, win 1-2 because my opponent is screwed and have 6 decent games.

Chiang would say Learn to Mulligan, n00bs!

But really it's more that Barney on Xbone where broken matchmaker pairs us with rank 1 seals all the time. In the 6 games I've streamed for this challenge so far, I've faced ranks: 1, 1, 4, 10, 29, 39. Easier to survive floods and screws when you outclass many of your opponents in card pool and pilot knowledge/skill.

Yeah I have a softer pool of players for sure

But also I try to manage risk as best I can, like with the Life comes at you fast deck, I would never have played the lone rider above, cuz that deck dies if you have no creatures. Instead I use sRam and auras to normalize my hand strength as fast as possible

I learned this from somebody here (I think it was Kel) when I learned how to use Cryptbreaker to manage the mid game strength really well

But yeah my win rate is absurd, whatever it is. I wish it was tracked properly

In the playtesting I'm trying to get more transparent about my opponents cuz the comedy is great. Like someone got a t0 concession right before Timhs deck ran into a rank 40. If I had lost that game, it would have been really funny to eliminate his deck then and there :)

Lol, I can't believe it's survived to round 3 with you - usually my challenge submissions are your 1st ripped. I gotta do pilot tips every challenge now.

Yeah, our competition can be very soft on xbone. My win rate with the Hellbent challenge deck I submitted that you lost its first game with was something stupid like 30-2, and both losses (that I can recall) were to Gem with his Bant tourney deck, that he was testing in the run up to. It's funny in that I'm watching CGB's quest for the best series, and I can't help wondering how his dozens of qualifying lists would fair on Steam. Probably have 50% fewer qualifying lists there.

Round 1 Day 2.5

Monumental Lifegain 2-0 (3-0 on the round), Defiant Jank 1-0 (splashed in a game cause I had an itch to play it), Grim Nemesis 3-0.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/164568928
(Fam asleep quiet time again so no stream commentary :( )

Recaps to follow. Ho. Ly. ****. The last game is epic AF. Cucho's deck vs a fat stack with a great draw/top decks. I thought about conceding so many times after Opp resolved Sorin to slowly drain me, Sandwurms Convergence to lock out Brusela (sp?) from attacking, and got Ormendal flipped - but the deck had outs, so played it through and ended up pulling it off :D :D :D

Most of the games were entertaining. Monumental had a great comeback vs a Dimir steal-and-sac deck that had gotten out Murk Lurker, Willbreaker, and Voracious Null (even tho I misplayed, choosing to Reflector Mage Willbreaker away when it had a +1/+1 aura on it instead of casting Dusk//Dawn and straight killing it - just not used to playing the deck and completely brainfarting on that. I was super annoyed as soon as Mage resolved and I realized my error, but still ended up pulling it off).

EDIT: Recaps all added now

Monumental Lifegain

Ok play test time I will be taking 2 decks at the time to the battle field, Kitchen drain and Life comes at you fast.
Will be reporting.

Kitchen drain
G1 vs rank 40 esper
On the draw
T1: Festering mummy
T2: Exemplar censored
T3: Filigree resolved
T4: Filigree grasped + resolved Hapatra that meets fatal push on opponent main phase.
T5: He resolves a Gideon I attack with a both mummies + a Cartouche leaving Gideon at 1
T6: He Resolves Sorin
T7: I kill Gideon - Sorin kills a mummy.
T8: He Resolves Lily Death Majesty, and starts putting zombies on the board Sorin starts drawing counters ...slow death 0-1

G2 VS rank 39 RG energy
On the draw
T2 Exemplar - He resolves a pummeler
T3 Cartouche on the exemplar to kill his pummeler- he resolves a harvester
T4 He resolves that 2/1 that gives energy, pilots his harvester and cast built to smash on it + life link big swing!
T5 I cast a Cartouche on my Filigree to kill his guy and swing with 8 life link
He concedes 1-1

G3 vs rank 30 Rakdos vampires
On the draw
I keept a slow hand with 3 lands as soon as he drops indulgent aristocrat I know I´m in trouble lets see if the life link makes a difference
I lost track of this one, but the board went crazy with Hapatra and Kalitas + this guy sucks at Rakdos vampires the whole match he dropped threats but never attacks with them, I use that time to build my board with Kalitas and Hapatra. Then he realises he is in trouble and manages to kill Kalitas so I start attacking with Hapatra + Rougue passage creating death touch tokens every turn then I drop the decimator beetle FTW.

2-1
The deck overall has good synergies but the lifegain is low IMO, the -1/-1 counters helped a lot against aggro + I loved Hapatra! I think I will be building a deck around her.

Life comes at you fast will have to wait because Life :D

Haven_PT's Mono-black Lifegain/Lifeloss
Record: 7-0!
Notes: OK, I guess after posting about luck above I was due for one extreme or the other, but this was absurd. Baby lily in hand by turn three in six of of seven games. Perfect topdecks at make or break moments. Needing just a single mulligan across the whole set. Despite that I think this is a really strong deck, seems like there's always a power card at hand. I feel like it's really consistent, but I honestly don't know how much I trust the results here; I may go back and test it some more at the end.
23 land may be one too few for the amount of 5+cc action here; I obviously recovered from the stalls but they were the most noticeable hiccups in testing. I think outside of the contest requirements it would be stronger running bone picker over croc, and I'd say something over essence extraction too, if the lifegain off that card hadn't 100% saved me one of these matches.

Yeah, our competition can be very soft on xbone. My win rate with the Hellbent challenge deck

I still have my Hellbent madness on the library, after a few tweaks he has arrived to a very tight spot. The win rate its also insane on iOs ladder. I believe the Xbox sacrificed the competitiveness of the match for the speed in which you are matched. I have seen CGB streaming also and he does not wait more than 5 secs before he has a match, on iOs that´s slower, but on the top of the ladder you are almost always (95%) paired with 30+ ranks.

- Evolutionary leap
- Sandwurm convergence
- Ormendal
- Sorin
and you pull it off with +85 life!!!
Insane!

Congratulations, That's a fantastic run! I actually went 6-0 with it before I took my first 2 losses. It managed to beat plenty of tier 1 decks during the testing, so I believe the deck is quite strong but probably not as fun/interesting to play as some of the other competitors, unless mono-black is really your thing...

Already you basterds, let's get back to round three and finish off this playtesting. I want to put three hours into this now if I can...

Cuchos grim Nemesis up first...playing against rank 19 jeskai tokens. He gets a huge board and I suicide my flipped lone rider into them hoping he'll flip my avacyn and he does! Yay. I then ult Gideon and drop Ob and the guy activates his mike, "hey, hey you.... you're a bitch. Peace out". 3-0

Havens mono black is last!...came up against rank 40 Orzhov Zombies, uh oh. Had to mull to 6 and kept 3 swamp, Scrounger, titan and koth, yuk. Drew a fatal push and stupidly waited until T2 to kill Cryptbreaker which let him make a zombie. He gets Colossus and Lord and I'm in huge trouble. He gets double removal and it's over! 2-1 Havens deck is eliminated!

Round four starts now, four decks remaining. We're playing down to top two...

Let's start with Defiant Junk by Timh...oh no Timh comes up against a rank 40 too! This can't be good. He's playing GRB réanimation. I make a huge mistake on t3 and forget to play GOP because I didn't drop a green source which I had. I make up for it on t4 when I play GOP and Lone Rider to flip him. A huge back and forth takes place then with his heavy removal and me having Anyi online! Sacing Zombie tokens from Kalitas to exile his big rares. But the. He ever after into That 7/7 with trample and hexproof. I have him at 6 life and I have 48 life. He Chandra ignitions my Kalitas and ayli and flipped lone rider and Advocate, leaving me with Shamblent Vent and that's it. I then use a blessed alliance on his two hexproof guys to buy me sometime but the next turn I drop Bloodlird which would have won me the game with Blessed Alluamce if I kept it with Shamvking Vent!! Not to fear tho I attack with Vent which hits for 2 after getting blocked and he can't stop four in the air so he concedes!! Yay Timmy!! 4-0!

Kitchen Drain next...

Lol, that game was so insane. I just finished the recap for it, and realized I didn't break that stalemate until turn 21  then it was another 4 turns or so to kill them. I had about 3 plays I regretted making early(ish) in the match, and I'm not sure how many turns they added to the game - but god damn if I couldn't get it done in the end!

Play test continues ...
G1 Vs Mono Black rank 37
I drop t2 Sram, t3 copter got them removed, he then plays not one but two Liliana's Mastery. I keep dropping creatures and he cast Yahenni's expertise to wipe my board. GG 0-1

G2 Vs 4C Super Friends rank 40
I got him at 3 with Chandra, Nissa and Nahiri at my feet, he drops Arlin, Sorin, and Tamiyo... I draw 5 lands in a row after a radiant flames... and he ultimate´s Sorin FTW .... I have never seen that. 0-2

G3 Vs Boros Vehicles rank 40
on the draw... I got hammered badly, 3 consecutive harnessed to my Sram, Thalia and Wharf. I drop Gisela, but Chandra deals with her, then I drop a Copter but draw no more creatures to pilot it. His board is a Veteran pilot, Copter, Chandra of defiance and Hazoret FTW.

I watched this deck when Wintervoid streamed his playtest the other day, and I was very anxious to pilot it... I don´t know what happened here because this deck had all kind of funky synergies, I just could not experience them during this short testing... I will take him out again for the rematch.. but he is 0-3 ATM.

Night!

Kitchen drain gets a big win against some mono green thing. 6-0

Life comes next...win against a funny lifegain Gruul deck 6-0

Grim Nemesis is last...ouf that was a touch match against rank 18 Orzhov Zombies. He got everything out and I couldn't flip my line riders and I totally wasted my avacyn. Still, I was very patient and picked my moments. A miracle Angelic destiny shows up right after my initate flipped my riders and I could surprise swing for lethal. What a match 6-0

Well I could keep going but I'm getting tired and I'm playing sloppy. I don't want someone's deck to get torn up cuz I'm tired and my hemmeroids are acting up. So I'll stop there for tonight with four decks at 6-0!! I can't believe it! Great decks guys

Yeowch, brutal! Sorry she failed you so completely! Yours did really well:

Cucho Lambreta's Grim Nemesis
Record: 5-2
Notes: This is really solid. I had some times sitting with a bunch of removal in hand wishing there were just a couple more creatures so I could be more proactive, but this did really well and escaped a couple brutal long games. Siphoner is such a boss.
