Hey, is there any option on doing a topic across sub-forums? Sometimes a topic inolves more than one group and people on this site, other than mjack, tend to live in their silos, so it would be cool to get a little cross-contamination on certain topics that apply to more than one sub-forum. It would increase viewership and interaction in the thread topic too.

I think mods can do this for important announcements but i was curious if there was any way to do that as a user, or any plans to implement this down the road? If NGA is doing well, then I guess there's no great deed. But if postings are going down at all, this could be a good way to bring together the fractured community together for some discussions.

just an idea.

A mod could create a topic in one place and then move it to somewhere and leave a redirect thingy. I think.

That's because a lot of people don't like having corn mixed with their grain. And it's less headache to just deal with mice than it is to deal with mice, and cockroaches, and snakes.

In other words, there are people on this site I do not like and I avoid the forums they are in. I assume most others do the same.

I think most people just don't care to visit forum sections about things they don't care about. Sure, the people make the community, but I'm not going to jump into the dotp section in the off-chance I like it there when I don't play the games.

And this is why I think cross topics would be good cuz it'll mix users on certain subjects who never would breathe the same air ever

Setting aside whether this is something we want to do, I don't believe it's something we're logistically capable of doing. The only way I'm aware of for mods to make persistent cross-forum posts is through the announcement feature, and that system has lots of holes. Opening it up to general use would require fixing all those problems, and that would be a huge amount of work for Welder, if it's possible at all. Same goes for implementing it as a completely new feature. It's just not feasible at this point in time.

Someone earlier mentioned the more viable possibility, which is using the redirect system.

When there was disagreement over where 3CM belonged, it ended up being put in both forums, where the actual thread was in one forum and the other thread was a redirect leading to the actual thread. IDK how bumping interacted with that.

I don't know that opening up the redirect system to the public would be a good idea either, but it shold at least be more feasible than using the annoucement system, and at the very least gobos could set up redirects for people at request if it was something the community wanted and the thread was on-topic in both sections.

I think its a good idea, personally.

but the redirect doesn't get bumped if new posts go to it, I think. It slowly falls off the page.

For the record, I am speculating here. It is entirely possible that Welder knows of a simple way to make this work, and if he does he is of course free to correct me. But as far as I can tell it's not really doable, at least not without a lot of work.

It might be possible to allow people to move their own threads, but as far as I know the redirect system doesn't bump with new posts. Still, may be better than nothing. I'll bring it up with the other mods.

just guessing based on having used software similar to phpbb before (which i think is what NGA uses?) but mods should also have the ability to manually bump posts, although that is straying into the realm of excessive tedium, probably. Stickying is another option with its own issues.

But yeah, I only mention it because it seemed like a better avenue to pursue than the annoucement system does. Its entirely possible there are still too many problem with it for it to be practical for anybody to use.
