Thanks for the warm welcome back :-) If you want my contact info in case this ever happens again, feel free to ask via PM.

I think Kithkin and Leonin have a lot more potential than they currently get credit for. Dwarves are a more classic fantasy race, but unless they really start differentiating them from humans, they're a bit bland. Apart from the weird "camera angle" it's hard to see the difference between a Human and a Dwarf on Kaladesh. And it's not like Merfolk and Vampires have all that big of a presence in fantasy fiction either.

Welcome back!

Speaking only for myself, I'm a big fan of Kithkin. I think they fit very well into 's focus on community, and I think there is a ton of narrative potential there. I certainly enjoyed writing for them in "Whisperweft," and I think they could be a go-to [mc]W[mc] tribe, as long as they were not over-used, like goblins and elves got to be.

One of the two problems with kithkin is that they're a proxy of a proxy. Kithkin itself doesn't mean anything to people in the same way even halfling is used to substitute for hobbit. (which itself was a leprechaun without being that)

The other is they actually aren't all psychic. That was Lorwyn's twist on them.
I'd be more than slightly irritated if something like the thoughtweft turned up again.

I'd be happy to see Kor show up more as a more dedicated White characteristic race. I loved Kor when they first burst on the scene in Tempest. I'd love for them to be from more places than just Zendikar.

With dwarves, you'd almost have to go back to what they were in the old real world folklores. From what little I've seen, it is vastly different than what we're used to from MtG's dwarves, and might not go over well with the players due to the strangeness.

And the traditional dwarven schtick for high fantasy - making weapons in the forges - has been shifted to the kor

Let's not pretend it's something multiple cultures can't take part in.@

Dwarves are traditionally industrious and orderly. A usually balanced mixture of and , which probably resonates more than Magic's past mono- dwarves.

Regardless, it appears vampires bleed into in Ixalan, so maybe they're that set's equivalent of Amonkhet's mummies.

Fair enough. My point is - beating hammers and poking elder beasts best left unpoked is the breadth of the fantasy dwarf (my experience with these being the Rings movies, Death Gate Cycle, and any Eberron novels that happened to feature dwarves). I myself liked the atheist thing Theros was doing with the leonin.

Oof, as much as I love Eberron, it was specifically made as a deconstruction of classical fantasy tropes, so as a sample, their dwarves are a terrible choice.

I too am a huge Eberron fan. But yeah most everything there is purposefully twisted in one way or another. It's a great world, but more exception than rule.

Dwarves have the forging thing, yes. Forging is more red, but white does get plenty of equipment stuff. But dwarves also historically have a strong sense of community and family, a more white thing. They tend to lack red's individuality and chaos, showing some of white's orderliness along with it's community focus. Both colors get to be stuborn, which is a dwarf's other defining trait besides beards and alcohol.

As to their appearance: Elves have pointy ears and that's it on some worlds so I'm sure they could do something.

Merfolk are very well known fantasy creatures. Vampires are, well, about all black has but zombies. Unless they color shift orcs. But while not common Tolkienesque fantasy, they are well know horror. Black isn't much better than white in the characteristic race to be honest.

I too would be fine with Kithkin. I like Kor and I like Leonin. Not sure if I like them as the default Characteristic though.

And we have info of Vamps on Ixalan? So that's pirates, dinosaurs, vampires, and a gorgon. This is looking like a beautiful crazy mess.

You must have hated "Whisperweft," then. :D

I don't have a problem if other, non-Lor/Moor Kithkin had something like the thoughtweft, although I don't think it should be universal to all Kithkin on all planes. So, if they were to revisit Kithkin as the primary tribe, I don't think the next Kithkin should have it.

Eh... it's different in a fan project.
But it IS precisely what I'm talking about. When the world was created, chances are slim that Amrou was considered and the fact Kithkin weren't universally (multiversally?) psychic. It's an exposure issue, and the one massive slice of it has probably totally skewed perception.

I know, right? Seems like we can expect some of the wacky oddballness that Magic hasn't really done in a while. Also, vehicles! :D

I really don't mind kithkin and kor, but leonin are my favourite white race by far, so I hope they'll settle for those if they really have to force themselves into having a characterisitc race for each colour. We might see two or three kithkin on Dominaria next year I guess. That would be nice. And I really want to know where Amrou is after all those years, it's about time they filled some blank spots on the map. And if they're still losing sleep on white races after that, how about returning to Kamigawa for more kitsune? :V

This is your amusing reminder that Jace only has 9 toes.

Well, he does, but what's that got to do with anything?

I hope he'll lose more than just a toe the next time he faces Bolas...

Speaking of this, what is the Kithkin identity, and what are acceptable twists on them? I feel like for the Elves' forest-affinity, Vedalkens' science-affinity and Goblins' stupidity, Kithkins have communities as their key word.
Innistrad Kithkins are divided into large cults, Mirrodin Kithkins embellish metal bracers and other ornaments that display their clan insignia, Kaladesh Kithkin run a bunch of open-source projects.
