I convocated today! Which is not really a big deal given that I technically graduated months ago.
I am however, a little peeved that the first thing my father said to me afterwards was a criticism of my dress choice (I thought the grad gown would be long enough that you couldn't tell I was wearing shorts). I only went through the whole ceremony for his benefit after all.

Congratulations! It's always a good feeling to be able to move onward.

I need to stop checking the internet each morning. Nobody wants to wake up to people dying.

You all might want to head up to Magic General and look at (and discuss) MaRo's recent article about how they are making Magic going forward. There's a lot of story relevant parts in there that should probably be talked about, but not all over the place (which is why I didn't post a sister thread down here).

Well, bugger. I guess the set coming out before the core set means it's only this one set. One. Set. And just calling it Dominaria is the most stupid name they could have come up with. We already had a bazillion sets on Dominaria, and none of them featured the name of the plane in the title, it completely goes against the established naming convention. Seems like they still haven't realised that Dominaria isn't like their tiny planes of hats after which they usually name their sets.

It's great to have an official confirmation that it's happening, but right now, I feel nothing. I might as well leave a sentimental Docor Who clip to express how I want to feel about it, though.

They didn't name the set "Dominaria". They just told us where we are going. Also, there is no reason the Core set cannot also be set there, containing 50% reprints from Dominaria and 50% new cards as well. Also, just because there is a Core set next in line does not mean that any of the following sets can't also be set in Dominaria to shore up ares that need visited.

You are way over curmudgeoning this.

Well in that case I stand slightly corrected, but still optimistic.

It could just be a place holder: the set is basically a year away. I could be wrong though.

The product announcement calling it "Dominaria" suggests to me that that's the definite, final, extremely underwhelming name. And if they were doing three sets to explore different regions of Dominaria, then why call the first set "Dominaria"? Wouldn't they name each set after the region it takes place in? Then there's the fact that the two sets after the core set are called "Spaghetti" and "Meatballs" respectively, which seems to mean that they belong together. Somehow I don't see "Soup" fitting in there, but hey, I'd love to be proven wrong on this. And putting Dominaria stuff into a core set doesn't compensate for anything if it's just that and "Dominaria". Like, not even close. As a nice addition, sure, but there's only so much a core set can do. I guess that's the downside of not doing blocks anymore, you never know what you'll get after the next set.

It could easily be the next 2 sets after Dominaria still take place there exploring specific continents while "Dominaria" just gives you a taste of everything. We havent been like in what, over a decade? The majority of players will know almost nothing about it so this makes sense to me.

I'd be fine with that. I'll consider anything under three proper sets "too little, too late", though.

I have a feeling it will either be the whole year. I'm not ruling out a one set stop on 3 of magic's iconic planes, although Other than Ravnica and Dominaria I'm not sure what would be on that level; but I think if they were gonna do that Dominaria would have been the third set.

I mean I'll be happy just going back and seeing how it's gotten on. I just expect the return to be more than a set.

Because Goblins. AGAIN.
