So a friend and I are developing a rpg game not only based on Magic, but using the card's. While playing with character creation stuff I've stumbled on a character I rather enjoy. A Kor Auramancer/Totemist/Spiritualist like character from Zendikar.

It started with Hyena Umbra, then came bestow cards from Theros. And so I have this idea of a Kor wearing a Helm of the Gods and decked out in ethereal armor that looks like the hoplite armor from Theros.

So I have the look, some locations, but not much character or story. Not even a name. I imagine him as having been part of an adventure team before they died coming face to face with one of the Eldrazi Titans and him ascending. I like that he assumes Zendikar is done for and so doesn't return. I know he is fascinated by the nyxborn, but don't have a reason to leave Theros. Preferably to Ravnica, where he might stay for a bit. His main strategy his buffing himself, but also enhancing people he fights alongside.

So does anyone want to help me make this Kor Auramancer?

Can I instead derail the thread to dissuade you from trying to use the trading cards as part of a rpg ruleset?

I'm confused. Do you need help developing a character (which you already seem to have done) or do you need some sort of card representation of him?

Also, I'm with Mown. Every Magic -> RPG translation that tries to use the cards pretty much ends in failure. You'd be better off doing something like a Pokemon/Magi Monsters RPG, but with some sort of energy pool like Sanity from Call of Cthulhu or some other RPG to cast your spells and summon monsters.

I'd be happy to help you workshop him a bit, if you'd like. Mostly, I'll probably just ask you questions about him.

For example, what kind of personality were you thinking? Kor in general tend to be very family/community oriented, which of course is due to their being centered in . Did you envision this Kor to share that trait, or go against the grain for some reason or another?

You mention that you want him to assume that Zendikar is lost. Did he see the rest of his family die to the Eldrazi? That could explain why, even after he learns to planeswalk, he doesn't even try to go back.

Brainstorming here, but if you do want to play into the Kor's sense of community, which seems to make sense as a character, maybe he leaves Theros because he just can't fit in (stands out too much) which really bothers him?

Mown: Not really. If nothing else it's a fun thought experiment. And he started it and brought me in. No matter how it turns out, it's at least something that has me excited creatively for the first time in years, so it worth it just for that.

Azureshade: I have trappings and some points of the start of his journey, but no real meat to the character. I have his race, his look, his magic, and 2-3 planes he's been to along with a few details here and there. I was looking for help making them gel into a full character with actual motivation, history, and personality.

Raven: His personality is one of the biggest thing for him I don't really have. I figure as he would be community/family oriented in some way. Especially after rereading Maro's article on the color combination this morning. With some thoughts and some of your comments I'm thinking he has a sort of need for a community. He knows he lost his friends, and think he lost his world, so he's just trying t find people to call home. I think it also feeds into his tendancy to buff others and put himself in harm's way to protect others.

His most basic origin is he was an "ally" from the original block (adventuring party not fighting with the Gatewatch), and they were fighting Eldrazi when they got caught in the aura/presence/power/whatever of one of the titans. His spark ignited. He knew his friends were dead and the Eldrazi were destroying everything. So he assumed there was nothing he could do to save it and tried to put it out of his mind.

I like that idea. I may take it a bit furthur and say that through his strange appearance and the use of enchantment magic like the umbras he was seen as an emissary of the gods or such. He became uncomfortable with being singled out and made "different/other".
