My adoration of fantasy literature knows almost no bounds. However I refuse to bow to the idiocy that is the idolatry of the LotR.

It's the money shot of the bush riddled, perm adorned 70's. Fantasy, like porn, has come a long way since then.

Though even in his own time Tolkien was outclassed by his piers; Gormenghast is a far superior piece of literature.

To be honest, Tolkien's greatest contributions to literature IMO are his translations of the old Skaaldic/Eddic poetry.
