Okay, 'Funeral of Hearts' is a moody rock ballad with distortion and tortured lyrics. The band members are wearing all black, with pale face paint and dark eyeshadow, and filming in the snow while braziers burn around them. It's probably not a happy song.

The chorus makes heavy use of imagery to convey an emotional state. It's clearly not describing a real-world situation, at least not directly. There are a few major themes it hits over and over - love, pain, beauty, and death, all connected, and set to a distorted emotional soundscape. Love, the lyricist seems to be telling us, is beautiful but also painful: a tragic happenstance doomed to cause heartbreak.


Given the themes of the song, we can guess that "he" and "she" are, or were, lovers of the addressee -- they're described with romantic, supportive metaphors. But they appear to be described as destructive, manipulative figures who take advantage of the addressee, even while the song praises them. They swoop in on you while you're vulnerable -- your hopes and dreams are in a "tomb," you're painted in a "vulnerable and pale" glow. And they carry in the "troubles and fears", drawing you like a "moth to the flame" -- an inevitably self-destructive relationship. This is consistent with the music video, in which the lead singer's head is disconcertingly replaced by an animal skull, and dovetails neatly into the theme of "love equals pain equals beauty equals death" echoed by the chorus.


The first two lines sound like an anguished outburst against injustice. The singer refers to something out of reach of the divine -- beyond even God's ability, or willingness, to intervene in. Perhaps the singer begrudges God for abandoning him. In the second two lines, the narrative turns to the "last night," a night of passion and "souls on fire" -- but it leaves us hanging, without resolution. We don't know what the "three little words" are, and we don't know "why." The three words could have been "I love you," "I hate you," "let's break up" -- we don't know. All of this builds up a sense of ennui, and confusion, and outrage against an unjust world.


Within the context of the verses and the bridge, we can now confidently say that this is a song about heartbreak. It's an outlet for the anger and sadness and confusion caused by love -- an anthem that lashes out against the dark side of love, which is so often whitewashed. Love, after all, is the "funeral of hearts": it's beautiful and passionate, but in the end it breaks our hearts, and it burns us out, and leave us hanging and confused in the cold.
