Taking out Jace, Vryn's Prodigy seems like a terrible decision.

That boy Jace though. Image

I wonder where he fits in the meta currently; I like him as an offset Planeswalkers with a decent Ultimate, but a good bit if the time he attracts removal before he's able to flip. I could see why you took him out.

If he comes down T2 and usually even T3, he's amazing. If he comes late, he's amazing if he survives a turn. Seems more than worth the cost of a single slot.

Been some time, again. I haven't found time to update this thread in a long time.

I'm not sure how much I like the current format of the thread sorting by colours. Would you guys prefer it staying that way or would you prefer sorting the thread into categories like "Metagame deck", "Fun deck", "New idea" or "I don't know why people play this more" (only with hopefully snappier names)?
I could see it both ways; leaving the structure as is and denoting the category with tags [like_this], or sort by these categories (and, in these categories, in vuberant order).

I'll still mostly focus on metagame decks and not so much fun decks, but sometimes an idea is not good enough but fun to play.

the 2nd thing please. Don't sort by colour. be original and give cool categories. I like your decks (obviously).

First Aether Revolt update!

For the first weeks up until sometime I feel like we can talk metagame, I'll leave all the KLD decks in their respective categories; all of them could be opimized but my time is limited and I can't test all of the adjustments everytime.
During that period of time, all the new AER decks will be in Category 4. I'll put a disclaimer into the staring post.

Anyways, Category 4 will get filled in the coming weeks. I just put my current take on Abzan Superfriends there; likely to follow are Grixis Improvise, Mono-Red Aggro, Selesniya Ramp as well as updated lists for Vehicles (likely turning Boros) and Esper Control.

Feel confident enough about my Esper Control list that I'll put it up here.

It actually doesn't profit much from AER technology: 3 Fatal Push are the only AER cards I wanted to run. These are a notable upgrade over Grasp of Darkness, though; mainly because it makes the deck's mana run much smoother.

Creatures (4):
1 x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
1 x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
1 x Disciple of the Ring
1 x Torrential Gearhulk

Planeswalkers (3):
1 x Jace, Unraveler of Secrets
1 x Ob Nixilis Reignited
1 x Sorin, Grim Nemesis

Instants and Sorceries (26):
3 x Fatal Push
3 x Blessed Alliance
2 x Declaration In Stone
3 x Telling Time
2 x Scatter to the Winds
4 x Spell Shrivel
2 x Anguished Unmaking
3 x Glimmer of Genius
2 x Languish
2 x Confirm Suspicions

Lands (27):
1 x Plains
4 x Island
3 x Swamp
2 x Shambling Vent
2 x Praerie Stream
2 x Sunken Hollow
2 x Glacial Fortress
2 x Isolated Chapel
2 x Drowned Catacomb
3 x Aether Hub
4 x Evolving Wilds

Other AER cards I was considering were Baral, Chief of Compliance and Baral's Expertise. With Baral, I felt like he did not offer the deck enough to warrant his inclusion; Sigiled Starfish would allow me more card selection most of the time, and the discount on instants and sorceries, while not irrelevant, does not fit this deck well enough.
The Expertise is a lot closer; as it kills the opponent's tempo while getting your own up. However, this deck does not run many cards you want to cast off the Expertise (same reason for the exclusion of Yahenni's Expertise), and it actually is card disadvantage.

Kalitas could easily back out for Liliana or Gideon (I'd have to adapt the manabase to fit the latter, though; not sure if that's worth it considering the deck gets by on single White otherwise). Also, the mana would be good enough to run some Broken Concentration as 3-CMC-counters, but the exile clause on Spell Shrivel is a very notable upside. If only we had Void Shatter...

Also, I could see cutting one Island for a utility land (Westvale Abbey comes to mind); but with the deck being rather blue-heavy I don't mind the extra blue source at all.

Solid. I would play some maps to turn on push for mid-game over a few lands, 27 is nice and disciplined, but the opportunity cost of maps is low (thanks to push helping to cover the early game anyway), and the long term thinning they can provide is actually relevant to this deck. I'm not sure If you wanna go deeper still and play rebuke, but a 4 drop tezz might be fine if you do.

Abbey is almost a mirror consideration; it's fine in theory, but also mostly superfluous before you start entering the next showdown.

I don't think Renegade Map adds enough to the deck.

If I were to add some, they would play like Evolving Wilds, but slightly worse since you don't get to thin the deck immediately and you need an untapped land to make it work as an Evolving Wilds. Also, if I were to add them, I'd need to cut lands, but likely need to add Basics (as both Wilds and Maps need Basics to not be dead lategame). This means I'd have to cut Duals for them, and I highly doubt this would be worth it; while we would get more thinning our manabase would get slower as well (the Duals often come into play untapped t3-6, Map never does).
Triggering Revolt for Fatal Push often is not even necessary: most of the creatures I really need to hit early are CMC 2 or less; and this even holds true for the lategame (manlands!). Against CMC 3 or more I have to rely on my other removal spells or have an incidental Revolt trigger sitting around; but I have found my ways to deal with CMC 3+.

Tezz is not good enough even if you play 4 Maps imo; you need to be devoted enough to artifacts to make his -2 good enough. In this deck, it would be -1/-1 or -2/-2 the turn you play him at best even with Maps; and I don't think that's enough. In this deck he's basically a "race for my Ultimate" walker; but if I want one of those I'd add Liliana (whose -2 is sometimes really powerful recurring a Gearhulk).
Metallic Rebuke would go in over Spell Shrivel, but the few times I could play Rebuke for 2 mana early-game don't make up for Shrivel's increased utility later (exile the spell, one extra mana to pay (can be HUGE)). Again, it's better off in more artifact-driven archetypes.

After testing it out, I believe this is where I'll settle for Golgari Counters:

Creatures (25):
2 x Walking Ballista

2 x Greenbelt Rampager
3 x Narnam Renegade

2 x Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
3 x Longtusk Cub
3 x Winding Constrictor

2 x Yahenni, Undying Partisan
2 x Tireless Tracker

2 x Bristling Hydra
3 x Armorcraft Judge

1 x Verdurous Gearhulk

Non-creature spells (11):
3 x Fatal Push
3 x Blossoming Defense

2 x Smuggler's Copter

1 x Nissa, Voice of Zendikar
2 x Aethersphere Harvester

Lands (24):
4 x Swamp
9 x Forest
2 x Hissing Quagmire
2 x Woodland Cemetery
3 x Aether Hub
4 x Evolving Wilds

This is the exact decklist I've posted in the Golgari Counters thread, and it does a lot of work. We're off the Standard lists a bit due to not getting some of the key cards (Rishkar ), but the list nonetheless feels very solid, has very nice synergies and seems to have about the correct speed.

I tested the Dynavolt Burn Control, classified as "Category 1". Results are:
10 games, starting rank 22, 5-5
10 games, starting rank 22, 5-5
10 games, starting rank 22, 8-2
10 games, starting rank 28, 3-7

Did you just test it recently during AER? These lists are not optimized for AER yet; my AER lists are in Category 4: Seeking New Ideas. The disclaimer in the starting post should have made that clear; I apologize if it caused confusion.

Regarding DynavoltControl, I actually haven't played it during AER yet and don't know whether the list should be updated at all. I also am not sure whether it will maintain its tier 1 status; your testing suggests otherwise (Maybe tier 2).
