Anyone remember Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds?



In its day it was pretty awesome. They had one expansion. I guess in comparison to full magic the card pool was pretty limited but what they created just worked.

Before the real twitter / twitch era it had a decent following of people watching the replays of matches.

I remember the Playstation one. "Vampire Bats! Vampire Bats! Immolation!" It think it had some nice bits where you could read little stories about each of the early expansions. Or am I getting it confused with the old computer one from Microprose...

Yeah that was a card game based variant but even back then had full deck building, it also had an expansion "spell of the ancients". You can still get a version that works on modern PC's. Graphically though and interface it would make MTGO look polished lol.

Wow, I never played Battlegrounds, but it looks kind of cool. I don't understand how you would manage spell selection and targeting, but I guess they made it work.

The original Microprose Duels was definitely my jam though. I wouldn't mind if WOTC did something a little like that. But otherwise they really need to just get their **** together and make MTGO not horrible.

Alcohol and sex are my biggest motivators. That's what bars are for, not LGSs unfortunately. I've played at a couple of stores that as long as you did it discretely you could drink while playing, but that only covers one of the bases. The least important.




I still own a copy of that game with my xbox. So fun. My favorite way to win was Retromancer, spiritualize, spiritualize, spiritualize, reckless charge, reckless charge, reckless charge. Then you win through Test of Endurance.



You target the closest creature to you unless there is none, then it targets the opposing planeswalker. After some time with the controls it only becomes a problem on rare occasions.

MMO? Really? Damn garbage! What we need is something like Magic Duels where all cards work, no card number restrictions, and cheaper than paper magic/MTGO. That's it. If only they poured their resources on that, their digital platform could be saved. I know it's easier said than done, but wtf is this MMO? Seems like a waste of resources to me.

They are not going to make a game where you can play all the cards from paper for cheaper than paper. At least not without a ton of grinding (and no not that minor amount you guys deal with now).

Sorry for the thread-necro, but I thought this article was worth sharing and I didn't want to create another one to speculate something we already speculated multiple times. At least it condenses all the little bits of information we have in one place.

Pretty much agree with the author's guesses. It replaces Duels, or it replaces both MTGO and Duels. Either way, clock's a tickin' lol.

The author's supposition that, if it replaces both MTGO and Duels, with the current MTGO players' collection carrying over and Duels players' not doing the same, is a bit worrisome. Certainly good for the paying players of MTGO, but dumpy for freeloading Duels scum like me. I'd hate to start at a card disadvantage, preferring to grow into that disadvantage naturally.

All speculation, of course.

If it means not having to put up with Stainless' ****, I'm all for it, whatever it is.

Hopefully if you played duels it's like a special bonus and you get your collection, except maybe minus the D cards? But the offer only lasts for a few months and you basically have to get on board right away.
With the rarities in duels your collection would be a bit disjointed and still makes you need to buy more cards.

Considering that I waited out the bugs, the price and ultimately the base platform, I sure hope this new digital landscape will suit by new PS4 Pro.
Wonder how the game would be in VR?

I just hope they don't have some watered down version of mtg for newbs that is freemium but you have to poney up the $$ and go MTGO if you want the full experience. I enjoy being able to play the game with multi color lands, different win cons, using planeswalkers etc. Simple is not always better and I don't want to be stuffed into playing MTGO if I want to continue playing what we currently have.

Perhaps this means that they are looking at Shandalar II -- something that many have been wishing for --
