The specific cards that initiated this issue are Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Woodland Wanderer.

The specific situation being that, at FNM tonight, somebody exiled a Woodland Wanderer with Gonti and then cast it on their next turn. But then as it was entering the battlefield they realized they had no idea how many counters it should enter with, so I got called over. I also wasn't sure how many counters it should enter with, but I ruled that since Gonti says "you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast it" that the game would still see that you spent (which was the mana the Gonti player produced to cast Wanderer) even if you spent the mana as though it were . So in that case, the Wanderer would have two counters.

I did inform the players involved that I wasn't 100% sure how the cards interacted in this case and that I would look into it. Haven't really been able to find anything so far that has specified what exactly happens in this scenario (even checked cards like Mycosynth Lattice and Engineered Explosives to see if they had any rulings on them about it, but nope). The closest thing I can find in the Comp Rules is 609.4, but that seems to apply mostly to stuff like Thousand-Year Elixir.

609.4

Did I make the right ruling? If I didn't, it's not that big of a deal as the Gonti player ended up winning anyways. But it'll be nice to know for future interactions with Gonti and Converge cards.

I'd assumed that choosing the "type" of mana covers the colors as well as other things (snow, colorless... Phyrexian?). But I'm not a judge so I wouldn't know.

*"To YMTC it up" means to design cards that have value mostly from a design perspective. i.e. you would put them in a case under glass in your living room and visitors could remark upon the wonderful design principles, with nobody ever worring if the cards are annoying/pointless/confusing in actual play

Your ruling was correct. Gonti just lets you bypass the color requirements of the cost, but anything that cares about the mana spent will still see it for what it actually is. You can see this in the rulings on Celestial Dawn, for example:
Quote:
You may use a different color mana than the color required for spells and abilities that require a specific color. If you do, and the spell or ability checks the actual color of the mana, it can tell the difference.

Ah, I forgot about Celestial Dawn and thus didn't think to check it for rulings. Thank you.

Just colors or the absence thereof.
