Seems like a pretty sensible request to me, especially for those of us who are mods.

Hey folks, I've deleted some posts from this thread. Harassing other users is against the CoC. Let's try to keep this thread for discussions of feature requests. Thanks!

Could we make the wiki and Card search links in the top right appear for people who aren't logged in? We should really be up front about all the awesome stuff we have here.

They are? If I log out and go to the main forum page, the upper-right links that show up are Front Page, Card Search, and NGAWiki.

not that I expect it to matter much, but is it ok if I put a link to my youtube channel's Patreon? it's advertising for fundraising, but it's a creative project that I'm personally involved in and I think those are supposed to be allowed? I wanted to check before I did it though.

That's not really a feature request; PMing a mod is a better place to ask about this.

While we're at it can you tell me why searching in forums or threads isn't available to lurkers?

(I phrased it this way because I've asked multiple times with no response.)

Searching in threads has been available to lurkers for a while now.

Searching in forums while not logged in should work now.

Those are emoticons. Emojis are the ones that are actually single unicode characters but are often displayed as images. I'd post some examples, but apparently I get an error when I try.

Quote:

Incorrect string value: '\xF0\x9F\x91\xBB o...' for column 'post_text' at row 1 [1366]

An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.

the commander has the gist of it! i'm asking mostly out of curiosity -- given that emoji are governed by unicode, how difficult would it be to incorporate them into the forum?

Answer: surprisingly difficult. They're supposed to work in the latest release of phpbb (after many changes were made), but we've made enough modifications to the forum that upgrading isn't a simple process.

thanks for the response, mod welder! this is terribly brazen of me, but let me know if there is any set of problems specifically which i can lend my talents to; irl i'm a devops engineer and if there is ever a groundswell of interest in Upgrading the Whole Damn Thing then i'd be overjoyed to put some of my own hours into the project

No problem, and thanks a bunch for the offer! :)

Upgrading The Whole Damn Thing has been on my to-do list for quite a while, actually. Unfortunately, it's behind Have A Day Job, Paid Side Projects, Keep Forum Running, and Remain Sane, so not a lot has happened there, and it really will be a fair amount of work. The biggest pieces are going to be (a) updating the essential forum modifications to fit the brand-new architecture in the latest version of phpbb, and (b) transitioning the (very large) database to the new (but not substantially different) schema.

(a) is complicated by the fact that many of the mods were written by other authors, and those authors haven't released updated versions. The dice-rolling one is a good example here. So we'd need to basically rewrite those to preserve that functionality. The good news is that a lot of the mods we have now are basically little graphical tweaks -- something I'm basically OK with leaving out, and fixing up when/if people complain/request them again.
(b) I have not really looked at at all, since to some degree what gets ported over is contingent on what mods are ported over as well. I figured I'd figure this out after getting the actual forum functionality in place.

Anyways that's where the UtWDT status lies at the moment.

What's most important to me is maintaining the visual appeal of the simple look.
Another forum I frequent upgraded to the most current incarnartion and while functionality was maintained for the most part, the visuals got a lot more... social media-y.

agreed! if i recall, the deathknell of the mothership boards was the upgrade to a heavier, "almost web 2.0 but not really" look and feel. i think any UtWDT process would have to be predicated with the knowledge that the end result would retain the super-lean phpbb interface that we all know and love

I don't love the phpbb interface.
Sanity is an outdated concept.
