Title: Screams in the Dark
Author: RavenoftheBlack
Status: Public
Word Count: 2349

And, since I'm thinking about Nasperge, I realized that I never put this little gem up for vote. This was written for Halloween 2014, but I'm putting it up for vote now with the other Nasperge story.

I'll abstain for this one; it's funny, but I think it has little purpose and thus I'm not sure whether it deserves a place in the Archive. If the vote can be changed I could maybe be persuaded otherwise.

Votes can certainly be changed up to the time the voting closes, which, if not extended for reasons of poor voter turn out, should be a week from today.

As to your concern about the purpose of the piece, let me give you my take, for whatever its worth.

For one thing, I think this is a character piece. It establishes certain components of Nasperge's personality, such as his willingness to go to a plane he clearly dislikes on the "advice" of his Aubedore readings, the trust he puts in those readings (to stick around with nothing to do for literally hours), and his own unique brand of self-amusement (giving a reading to a frog.) We also see him using his Aubedore cards on the move, while walking through dangerous areas, forecasting for possible danger, which is something we have not seen Nasperge do before. I feel we learn something about the Magician here.

The other thing I think this piece does is give an answer to your question from the other Nasperge story voting thread. You asked:

Maybe I asked this question earlier, but... has Nasperge any control on the cards he deals, or some form of foresight?

While this story cannot give a definitive answer to that question, I think we see from this story that there are certainly times when he clearly has no control over the cards, but still clearly believes in their prophecy. In this story, Nasperge receives a cue from his cards to go to Maaskaraad while he was trying to give a reading to someone else. The cards themselves seem to have spoken against Nasperge's own will. The reading he gives for the frog is equally telling, as even Nasperge can't discern its meaning, and finds it confusing, and yet still does not dismiss it as random "luck of the draw". And to me, that suggests that he is not consciously controlling the cards he deals, at least in these circumstances.

And finally, I'll just say that I do have some general plans for some things established in this story. They are currently fairly low on my "to write" list, as is probably evidenced in the fact that I haven't gotten to them in a year and a half, but I do have canon-related plans for this plane.

I hope that answers some of your questions or concerns!

Thanks for reading!

It surely does; I'm going to reread the piece in the light of your reply to see if my vote needs to be changed. The fact that this holds the starting point for a new storyline might weight too :)

Well, I can obviously make no promises, just that the intent is there. I have several things I need to get to first! :D

Another great story that I missed the vote on. Anyway, it's a "yea" from me, for the sake of posterity.
