I know a bunch of you out there play it, don't you hide from me, you. I'm TacticOgre on NA (despite actually living in Europe), if you want to add me for normals or ranked or ARAMs or just to make your friends list less empty, go right ahead. As for the thread, feel free to discuss both regular and competitive play here. Speaking of which, Fnatic vs Cloud 9 was a matchup I was hoping to see, so I'm glad that it's going to happen very soon.

I've tried LoL out, but in the end I just didn't enjoy it all that much. While I can certainly see the appeal, I just don't get it. That and the tactics of the base game seem to be:

Step One: Hide behind spawned troops.
Step Two: Attack other heros from a distance.
Step Three: Chase opposing heros if your health is higher; or, run away if your health is lower.
Step Four: Repeat 1 through 3 until the tower falls.

Now, in all fairness, that's oversimplifying it. But still, that's how it feels to me.

Step one is true for the first 10 minutes of the game, step two is inaccurate for melee characters, step three is pretty true (excluding Singed), step four kinda varies. The gameplay becomes a lot more interesting and nuanced the higher your matchmaking score is, but I can also understand how "kill enemy minions for gold until you're not useless and don't try wandering past turrets" might simply not appeal to some people.

Singed is really tricky to deal with until you have a lot of experience fighting him. Never chase him, you'll always die. Unless you're Vayne. Vayne can chase anyone.

I think my big problem with games like LoL is that you just have to keep spending to keep playing. That's one of the big reasons I left WoW. That and Mists was a horrible expansion. But yeah, I played with the base characters, but to get some other fun ones, you had to spend a decent bit of cash on the game. I prefer to buy mine straight up. And I know, there's DLC for most of them that take more cash anyways. Guess I'm just more comfortable with it that way.

You can buy champions with points that you earn from playing matches, and every week the free champion rotation changes. I don't think access to champions is a problem (and the idea that you have to keep spending is definitely not true.)

Maybe that's just how it seems from the outside. I mean, they sell giftcards for it at Wal*Mart, so it really looks like there is a pretty big cash cow going on with it. I suppose there are a lot of ways to get what you want in-game, I just never spent the time to figure it all out.

It's a polarizing issue. One of my friends prefers Dota because of the fact that all of the characters are immediately available, while my brother prefers LoL because he really enjoys the idea of progression and unlocking things in games. I guess I don't care much anymore because I have pretty much all of the characters that I intend on playing a lot, so unlocking another one just comes as a fun bonus to me every once in a while. I do think it's a decent model for a free to play game that came out of nowhere though.

It takes quite a bit of getting used to. Before I played with the camera locked, but now what I do is unlock the camera and hold the space bar until I get into combat or want to look around.

I wish it could zoom out farther.

Squinty_Eyes, Dota 2 has every hero available for free from the start. It is also a much better game than LoL, in my opinion.

I wanted to like Dota 2, but I just couldn't keep my eyes open.

I've had quite a bit of fun with LoL, but it's hard to play more than a couple of games in a row.

Despite having played around 60 hours of Dota 2, I've got to say I still find League to be more enjoyable. They're certainly more different games than they appear on the surface, I just happen to enjoy one more than the other. I still play it from time to time with my friend who's a big Dota fan, though.

Well to be fair that's 60 hours mostly of bot matches with me which became stale really fast since you're a quick learner and familiar with the genre. We should PvP more at some point.

LoL and Dota, while distinct in their own right, are both really fun games. It just comes down to preference and in the long run continued familiarity with the game. I've played every major MOBA/ARTS to date so that also includes Heroes of Newerth, and I found myself immersed in each respective game for quite a long time because of the depth and dynamic gameplay each game offers (Dota 2 more so for me in terms of immersion); 10 slots of characters to mind each match, over 100 characters to choose from to fill a match, each hero/champ having at least 4-5 abilities. That is a lot of combinations. Nevermind the nuances of the map itself.
