I was secretly hoping the Steam Showdown would start first so I could get an idea of the meta lol

It's probably going to be either a very "cautious" metagame just like Hakumite #1. Disproportionally more control and janky midrange decks that get pressed by a half descend aggro list. OR it's going to be reminiscent of the previous tournaments in which Ramp and Midrange decks reign supreme.

By the way...where are the decklist for the iOS tournament?

EDIT: I guess you also have to consider the impact of the Hakumite #1 and iOS tournament on the SteamShowdown. The RGx Eldrazi Ramp deck compared to everything else did amazingly well. Anything with R and is slightly aggressive is also a good call. In my past 2 tournaments it was R Aggro vs. G Ramp and R Aggro vs. U Tutelage. With so much more removal in the format I think Mono R isn't going to be a thing and alot of folks will chicken out because it's a new format. I think UW Humans/Eldrazi Tempo is the Aggro deck of choice. Bant is also a good call. 4-Color Walkers and Abzan are good because they believe in the Grasp of Darkness. I also predict more Eldrazi ramp than GeistRamp though I think 1-2 people might play it. Crats is still a real threat and I think 2-3 people at best might pick it. Lastly, 1-2 people might pick Thopters just because its going to be unexpected and the Hakumite gave people more respect for the deck.

The meta is still very varied, and fun.

For the tourney, I'm predicting Selsnya humanz, and Abzan control as the most popular decks, though.

Just because they seem to be the most finely tuned and tested, thus far. I don't believe Bant will make a strong showing, as most of the Bant decks I've played against online have either been weak, or not piloted well.

It doesn't really matter how long a match takes Chiang. You're talking about a tournament with 30+ people who all have different jobs that start at different times, have different family situations, live in different time zones, etc. I think everybody in the tournament really wants to play but it's a little naive to think we can all make it our #1 priority in our lives and churn these rounds out at a speed you feel is acceptable.

I think it's a mistake to say that. Mono R is still very good with Fiery Temper and Lightning Axe. I imagine it's going to be just like the Hakumite and 1st Steam tournament. Everyone playing slow janky decks and all getting smacked by a somewhat fast deck. I think Mono R Eldrazi will be wildly popular alongside UR Prowess.

Esper is good in theory, but tougher to execute in practice, especially if you know you're playing against Esper. The mana base is a huge problem, as the best answers are color intensive (Grasp of Darkness, Scatter to the Winds, Planar Outburst). Those first 3 turns are supremely important with the abundance of killer 2 drops now, and if you spend too much time fixing your mana base, you'll be playing from behind the entire match, and eventually just be run out.

Yea, that's true. But for other online card game tournies, they usually can finish a 4 round swiss in like a week and a half.
