This came up for me yesterday:

I cast Ulamog, exiling Westvale Abbey. They tapped the abbey and sacced creatures in response. The game must have bugged out because it just put a blank card tapped on their side of the board which hovered under their other creatures and the abbey was exiled.

Should they have got their Ohmendal or not? Ulamog's trigger is on cast and my understanding is tapping the land in response to that should give you the creature (which I didn't think of at the time of casting).

Yes

Certainly you can get your eldrazi when you sacrifice From B in response to Ula trying to exile it, for example...

Transforming does not leave a zone (unless specified like human walkers), so it should still be a valid target of Ulamog when it becomes a demon. The demon should be exiled.

My bad, I'm thinking that Gaea's ability works like protection, and therefore because it is also :u: it shouldn't be able to be targeted.

I don't feel bad about winning that game then. I guess it was a graphical glitch that left the blank card on the board.

ok so this should just be the random question thread.

Anyone figure out what time the reset is per day now? It's 6pm EST, right?

Reset as I understand is universal for everyone now. I think it resets at the same time for everyone! Hooray for globalisation eh? Or in Dr Who terms " you have been assimilated".

No it is not. UTC is the same as GMT and currently no-one is on that timezone but it's usually UK in the winter.
That aside, the Diregraf Colossus bug made me aware that it is supposed to count itself for the counters when coming out of the graveyard and this confuses me very much.

Nobody lives in Greenwich? Or is it daylight savings taking everyone there out of the timezone?

What do you think is meant by me explaining that currently no-one is in that timezone but that UK usually is in winter time?

Outside of DST: UTC = GMT
During DST: UTC = GMT+1 = CET
There's always someone living in UTC.

Is that how it works? I thought UTC never shifted because it's not a timezone? Either way I woke up now and realised I was being a bit uppity and forgot places like Greenland and Iceland are always GMT

Looking it up, the internet says UTC is GMT regardless of DST and is 12pm right now whereas GMT+1/BST is 1pm right now.

That aside, I am still confused on the ruling that giant zombie dude gets a +1/+1 counter off himself when coming out of the graveyard. I know the ruling says it is supposed to work like that but I don't get why the ruling works as such.

614.1c Effects that read “[This permanent] enters the battlefield with . . . ,” “As [this permanent] enters the battlefield . . . ,” or “[This permanent] enters the battlefield as . . . ” are replacement effects.

This particular replacement effect requires information about the game (the number of zombies in your graveyard). This information is determined only once, when the effect is applied.

608.2g If an effect requires information from the game (such as the number of creatures on the battlefield), the answer is determined only once, when the effect is applied. [...]

So, when is the effect applied? In the case of replacement effects, they are applied when the event they are looking to replace would occur.

614.1. Some continuous effects are replacement effects. Like prevention effects (see rule 615), replacement effects apply continuously as events happen—they aren’t locked in ahead of time. Such effects watch for a particular event that would happen and completely or partially replace that event with a different event.

So in other words, when you reanimate diregraf you activate it's ETB effect, but because the replacement effect happens while it's in the grave it counts itself, then comes out and gives itself the counters

So basically a reanimation spell already told it that it's coming into play so it's already checking the amount as its moving zones?

here let me walk through a scenario just to make it real clear

the only card I have in my grave is the Diregraf Colossus

- I cast Necromantic Summons targeting Diregraf
- Both players pass priority allowing Summons to resolve
- The first instruction says "Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield."
- This instruction is modified by Diregraf's replacement effect. After applying the replacement effect, it reads "Return Diregraf Colossus to the battlefield from your graveyard with a +1/+1 counter on it for each Zombie card in your graveyard." At the same time that we apply the replacement effect, we must determine how many zombies are in our graveyard. Currently I have one zombie in my graveyard
- Now that we have applied the replacement effect, we can actually move Diregraf from the graveyard to the battlefield and put 1 counter on it.

I'm guessing it's a replacement effect because it instructs that it enters with the counters instead of triggering to get counters once it has entered.
