If there is room when others have signed up, I might be interested in giving it a shot. The world looks amazing, but, it's been a long time since I've played any table-top RPG. I'm just now staring to follow some of the active games on the board. So, if you are full, I'd be happy yo just follow along, and maybe jump in to the next one. If you need/want another player, and don't mind a lot of noob questions....I surely have the time and the desire to learn.

I've been mostly reading some 3.5 stuff...I'll switch over to 4 for the next few days and see what I can learn.

Everyone, apparently, my DDI account is still active! You can access the Character Builder HERE. When picking options, make sure to check the source of that option; many tabs allow you to sort powers/feats/etc. according to source. My email is nothing.but.cake[at]gmail.com and my password is dreamer. Please don't abuse this though and post under my name at the old forums.

This will be useful for you, ty, because the goblin is not a standard race and the builder will compile the content for goblins.

Quick Question
You care much about what equipment we take? I assume since we are using Inherent Bonus magical gear will be unavailable at character creation? I assume potions and the like are still usable (always nice to have a few healing potions on hand after all). I ask simply because a Level 5 character has some 850gp to spend and I wanted an okay before I went crazy and got everything I can stick in my pack.
No, I don't. Feel free to buy up consumables, extra weapons, etc. I also pointed to the Wondrous Lair Items as a way to drop large amounts of extra gp.

Where did you get the 840gp number? I wasn't sure where to look for starting gold for level 5 players so I just used the treasure you would've accumulated over levels 1 to 4.

I think we are at four people right now, so there is definitely room!

Page 143 of the DMG guide. Characters starting at higher levels gain 3 magic items (one at level +1, one at level, one at level -1) plus gold pieces equal to the value of a magic item of their level -1. The chart for for values of magic items by level (p223 PH) indicate that this is 840gp. If you feel that is too much (since it was to take into account for purchase of magical items) please feel free to reduce it. Honestly your base gear, couple pieces of specialist gear and a few healing potions will generally set you back about 300-350 gold if you think that is a more appropriate wealth level for your campaign.

Also sorry for making an assumption about this. I DM'ed 4th Ed for about 4 years so it's kinda hard-wired into my brain at this point :D

I think the 840 gp is on top of the magical equipment you can get, if I'm reading Page 143 correctly. I've updated the first post to reflect 840 gold. Thanks!

So...like I said, I expect to need some help with this...
I used the character builder, and used that to create a sheet in Myth-weaver
I decided to keep it somewhat simple...so I went human ranger (hunter)
I'm sure there's a dozed things I've missed - I know that equipment is one - I was using the character builder, but, I'm not sure if that's the best resource, I'll look around a bit more...right now, she's just got the bow/leather armor/short sword/daggers/adv kit.

Started the early part of the backstory...I'll likely expand/change that over the next few days, especially to try and put more local flavor in.
So - my first attempt at creating a D&D character in over 20 years.

Oo, you made an Essentials character. This is my fault for not clarifying.

You want to click on: Build a Custom D&D Character > D&D Home Campaign

Then, under Select Class, sort by Source and you want the classes under Player's Handbook, Player's Handbook 2, Player's Handbook 3, Eberron's Player's Guide, or Forgotten Realms Player's Guide.

Essentials is easier to learn but that's because they restrict your choices a lot. I wish I could filter out the Essentials options for you to make it less confusing, but I can't. I started a new Soon with the right Ranger class though and saved it, so you can start with that. Equipment-wise, you just have to make sure you have the weapons you need and armor (I think the best you can get is Hide). Anything else is extra, like some people like having an extensive list of random stuff that may come up, whereas maybe you like to keep things clean.

Will most likely start on a character creation this weekend, work is gonna be rough this week plus the holiday.

And as a general note before I join I will be out of country around April, so if the game lasts that long (and I hope it does) my character may need to either be NPC'd or take a vacation.

To build on this, you can also look at the weapon support feats available. If you're going with a bow ranger, a longbow is a pretty solid choice. If you're going with a two-weapon ranger, you have a much wider variety of weapons. So you can compare feats available for longswords versus daggers, etc., by using the Search function in the feat section.

Or kidnapped...

You know...I did that first, but, for some reason, I thought that was wrong. No worries - I have a feeling I'll like more options anyway. Soon 2.0 on the way!

Oh, is there still room here? I'm up for more games! Also, is there a class slot that needs filling? I tend to just make characters to round out groups.

Well I know we have two Strikers and Bounty Hunter expressed interest in a Defender. So we could use both a Leader and a Controller if either of them tickles your fancy.

Thank you for your words of gibberish. (joking, I just have no idea what that translates to for classes. if you could tell me which classes are taken / open, that'd help me more)

Sorry yeah I didn't even think. My bad. 4th Ed basically has four roles with each class fitting into one of them; Strikers (who deal massive damage), Defenders (who absorb damage and keep the others safe), Leaders (who provide buffs and healing) and Controllers (who.. well they control. Status effects and all that). I know we already have two strikers (a Ranger and a Rogue) and a Defender (a Battlemind - psychic fighter I think? I'm not too familiar with the class).

So of the remaining roles that leaves Leaders who would be things like Clerics, Bards, Shaman and Warlords (who buff/heal via divine magic, songs, different divine spells and shouting respectively) and Controllers who would be Wizards, Druids, Invokers and Psions.

While Cleric's get there power from the gods and Wizards from study of arcane texts a Psion looks inwards to find power - and power they find. They use the power of there own minds as weapons as potent as any steel or spell. A skilled Psion can manipulate his foes perception of reality or dominate there minds completely - and if less subtlety is requires they can manifest this mental power as raw energy to slay foes directly. Given room to breathe and time to concentrate a Psion can easily change the flow of an entire battle.

Mechanically they have a lot of powers that they can use at will (unlike other classes who have powers that can be used once per encounter or once per day) and a reserve of energy called power points that they can used to amplify there at-will powers to greater levels of strength. This makes the Psion one of the most flexible classes available. For the most part they tend to focus either on Telekinesis and throw there enemies around the field or on Telepathy to dominate and confuse there opponents.

That sounds wonderful, I'll take it. Again, if DS can take on more players.
