Okay, what's number 44?

Obviously Obama (that said, we've only had 43 presidents, but Grover Cleveland is considered to be both president #22 and #24 on most lists, which is the reason why we have more numbers than presidents).

I don't know most of the presidents by number off the top of my head, but I can figure out their numbers by using the early presidents, Polk, Lincoln, the Cleveland sandwich, and Obama as reference points. I also remember their parties and generally at least something about the context of their administration.

Who's #45 then?
And while we wait on fact checking, what party's won the most elections?

A little research says that the Republicans have put one more president in the White House than the Democrats. But dem Dems get them to stay longer, and have actually for 3 years longer than the Republicans.

Speaking of liches it annoys the carp out of me that the easiest way to explain what a phylactery is to people is to say 'okay so you know Voldemort's horcruxes'? That's the world we are living in and it makes me sad.

I think "Soul-hidey box" is marginally easier. Of course many will respond with "Oh, like a horcrux", which brings back the annoyance.

I mean, while we're on this line of thought, are there functional ways in which Voldemort is not a lich, and, by extension, 'horcrux' is not a synonym for 'phylactery'?

The dollar sign, "$" originated from the combining of the letters P and S. PS was an abbreviation for Pesos. THe pound sign, "#" shares the same origin.
"MRs." (missus) was originally an abbreviation for mistress. Today it is not considered to be the short form of any word.

In WWII, Nazi Germany suffered nearly as many battle deaths at Stalingrad as on the whole western front.
Russian losses at Stalingrad were almost double those of the Germans.
The Russian army's official death toll for the war was 8.7 million, but many believe this to be a lowball estimate.
Between military and civilian deaths, ~16% of Poland's population died during WWII.
The Soviet government sometimes prevented civilians from evacuating Russian cities that fell under attack. Stalin believed that it would inspire the soldiers in those cities to fight harder.
After the USSR, China suffered the most casualties in the war.
Proportionate the the total world population at the time, China's An Lushan Rebellion was the most devastating loss of life in human history by a wide margin. I bet you never heard of it.

Boron is a metalloid chemical element with symbol B and atomic number 5. Produced entirely by cosmic ray spallation and supernovae and not by stellar nucleosynthesis, it is a low-abundance element in the Solar system and in the Earth's crust.[12] Boron is concentrated on Earth by the water-solubility of its more common naturally occurring compounds, the borate minerals. These are mined industrially as evaporites, such as borax and kernite. The largest known boron deposits are in Turkey, the largest producer of boron minerals.
...
As an ultratrace element, boron is necessary for the optimal health of rats. Boron deficiency in rats is not easy to produce, since boron is needed by rats in such small amounts that ultrapurified foods and dust filtration of air are required. Boron deficiency manifests in rats as poor coat or hair quality. Presumably boron is necessary to other mammals. No deficiency syndrome in humans has been described. Small amounts of boron occur widely in the diet, and the amounts needed in the diet would, by extension from rodent studies, be very small. The exact physiological role of boron in the animal kingdom is poorly understood.[123]

Boron occurs in all foods produced from plants. Since 1989 its nutritional value has been argued. It is thought that boron plays several biochemical roles in animals, including humans.[124] The United States Department of Agriculture conducted an experiment in which postmenopausal women took 3 mg of boron a day. The results showed that supplemental boron reduced excretion of calcium by 44%, and activated estrogen and vitamin D, suggesting a possible role in the suppression of osteoporosis. However, whether these effects were conventionally nutritional, or medicinal, could not be determined. The U.S. National Institutes of Health states that "Total daily boron intake in normal human diets ranges from 2.1–4.3 mg boron/day."[125][126]- Wikipedia

I figured most people wouldn't know what boron was.

I enjoy a well made fresh oat and raisin cookie more than a standard choc chip.
