Recently, I read up about the Tomb of Horrors - looked through the S1 PDF file and a guy's custom-modified version for 4th edition. I DM a group of players irl.
Now don't get me wrong, I love my job. I love creating places, people, lore, drawing maps, building dungeons.
And I especially cannot wait until they hit level 11 and I get to bring out the Tomb of Horrors.
One of my players was around during 1e and the original Tomb of Horrors. I think he played it, not sure if he beat it. The rest of my group had hardly played D&D in their life before our group, and know nothing of the ToH. I positively cannot wait until they enter a false exit or go through the sphere of annihilation and realize, "Oh, this one is different."
But then I got to thinking, "Man, wouldn't it be fun to play through this?"
And then I realized.
I can never play the Tomb of Horrors.
Never. I will know how to beat it, I already know its secrets, and this saddens me immensely, because the Tomb of Horrors is all about puzzles and secrets. So I'm wondering. Will it still be fun to play? Did any of you play/DM it and then later forget it all, and if so how long did it take? A few months? A year? More?
Because I really want to get killed over and over, and I cannot, and this saddens me, in a twisted, creepy way that only D&D nerds can understand.
