Oh, okay...In that case I don't really care one way or another. But since I can't undo my vote...

You can, actually.

I personally love asymmetric gameplay. The amount of depth you get from different matchups is just so vast. Imagine what Street Fighter would be like if you could only pick one character.

I've tried everything to undo my vote. I can't. I'm either voting for Occupational or Character. And since I don't care either way, I may as well leave it on Occupational. Ergo: I can't undo my vote.

@chinkeeyong, I think your definition of assymetric vs symmertic is different from mine. To me, that game is symmetric becasue everyone has the same options available to them, and everyone has the same goal. Assymetric is something like the Archenemy format in MTG.

One player gets an extra deck of very powerful scheme cards and it's typically 3 v 1 to compensate for this.

Believe me, Street Fighter characters have very different options available to them.

Step 4: Theme suggestions

I think we're at a point where we can let some creative work get involved. Everyone is allowed to submit one overall theme idea for the game. What is this game gonna be about? I started with the idea that it could just be No Goblins Allowed since it very much sounds like an idea for a game (and it will be one of the selections), but we don't have to go that route. Make your game theme short but descriptive. If you want to make a haunted house game, talk about a few haunted house aspects that are intriguing. You can name some game descriptions if you like, but don't bog your description down too much with it, especially since we'll get to that later.

Deadline for submissions is Friday, Dec. 18th, 11:59pm.

But the players don't.

The theme should be some kind of mix of lovecraftian and gothic horror. I would give more detail but I'm not sure who has won the poll yet.

Uh... no? Are we talking about the same game? Character options translate directly to player options. If your character can throw fireballs and your opponent's character can't, that's going to be a pretty game-changing factor in how the matchup plays out.

I vote for a fairy tale fantasy game about not allowing goblins anywhere. Alternatively, the players are goblins trying to do nefarious things without being discovered. The tone can be light like Lorwyn or dark like gothic horror, as mjack suggested.

Players can choose to limit their options at different stages in the game, but that doesn't mean they didn't have those options.

------------

The players could be members of the goblin version of little innsmouth trying to save their town from the eldrazi version of cthulian horrors.

I actually have a really cool idea: a strategy maybe resource management game about starting up and running your own website, probably more of a co=op type game where all players work towards a goal and everyone wins. Then if it's actually a good idea you could publish it and use the money to help fund nga in the future.

Believe me, Street Fighter characters have very different options available to them.

Starting from the character select screen it's symmetrical- each player has the same options. But if players select different fighters then the symmetry falls significantly. When you think about it that way, chess is only symmetrical until the first move is made, or maybe until the player's colors (and thus, turn order) are decided.

For themes, the fairy tale goblin theme sounds cool.
Running your own website (or maybe a game store?) could let us get super meta and reference ourselves. Maybe everyone wants the site to succeed, but wants their own subforum to come out on top?
For a new theme I'll nominate school. It's like universal and relatable and easy to make fun of and stuff.

a player in an archenemy game can choose to either play the archenemy or one of the three opponents

afaik designing and selling board games isn't profitable

By that logic Netrunner is a symmetrical game, because I chose to build a Corp deck and my opponent chose to build a Runner deck.

If I'm understanding "theme" correctly here: Reverse World Domination. The world is overrun by something (works with Goblins, kind of) and players are trying to get rid of the domineering/overwhelming force. No other details, figure it should be left open enough that, if we go this route, we can decide on specifics such as how large the world is, how exactly the world is represented, how asymmetry plays into the theme, etc. :incognito: I will say, though, that if we stick with Goblins being a part of the game, they could have a mechanic whereby they reproduce at a rate that makes it challenging (but not impossible) to rid the world of them.
