SMAC has some great ones

I was always fond of the slogan for Morgan Gravitronics: "What goes up, better doggone well stay up!"

I just heard this one today on a Tom Scott video:

"In times of war, the law falls silent." -- Latin phrase, attributed to Cicero.

Just a beautiful quote about ships, which is giving me a real kick in the butt to get to work on this thing that I've been meaning to do...

"To sailors, three things made a ship a clipper. She must be sharp-lined, built for speed. She must be tall-sparred and carry the utmost spread of canvas. And she must use that sail, day and night, fair weather and foul."

In watching American Sniper, I was reminded of a line in the M*A*S*H series:

Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

Nerd note: there's some historical ambiguity about whether or not William Tecumseh Sherman ever actually said "war is Hell" in as few words -- the quote is attributed to a speech he gave, but the no contemporary source recorded the verbatim text.

I think the more evocative quote, actually, is from his letter to the city of Atlanta: "War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it."

Because I've been sucked into these books along with the rest of my colleagues:

"I never asked for this crown. Gold is cold and heavy on the head, but so long as I am the king, I have a duty … If I must sacrifice one child to the flames to save a million from the dark … Sacrifice … is never easy, Davos. Or it is no true sacrifice."

_______________________

"Unchain me, and I will serve you."

"As you served Roose Bolton and Robb Stark?" Stannis snorted. "I think not. We have a warmer end in mind for you, turncloak. But not until we're done with you."

He means to kill me. The thought was queerly comforting. Death did not frighten Theon Greyjoy. Death would mean an end to pain. "Be done with me, then," he urged the king. "Take off my head off and stick it on a spear. I slew Lord Eddard's sons, I ought to die. But do it quick. He is coming."

"Who is coming? Bolton?"

"Lord Ramsay," Theon hissed. "The son, not the father. You must not let him take him. Roose... Roose is safe within the walls of Winterfell with his fat new wife. Ramsay is coming."

"Ramsay Snow, you mean. The Bastard."

"Never call him that!" Spittle sprayed from Theon's lips. "Ramsay Bolton, not Ramsay Snow, never Snow, never, you have to remember his name, or he will hurt you."

"He is welcome to try. Whatever name he goes by."

I find that, generally speaking, rebellion for the sake of rebellion is as much a form of slavery as conformity. The magnet that pushes manipulates as much as the magnet that pulls—either way, an outside force is doing the moving.

I'm currently reading a collection of stories by Cordwainer Smith (real name Dr. Paul Linebarger), and I wanted to share this excerpt from Under Old Earth:

"Most people want happiness. Good: we have given them happiness.

Dreary useless centuries of happiness, in which all the unhappy were corrected or adjusted or killed. Unbearable desolate happiness without the sting of grief, the wine of rage, the hot fumes of fear. How many of us have ever tasted the acid, icy taste of old resentment? That's what people really lived for in the Ancient Days, when they pretended to be happy and were actually alive with grief, rage, fury, hate, malice and hope!"

I keep an extensive quotations file, but few are applicable to the Extended Multiverse. I don't even pretend to agree with all of these, but they might inspire someone:

At this point in my playing (having finished the game 2.3 times), I am allowing myself to explore a few things, and am aware of the names Frisk and Chara, but as yet don't actually know who they are.

The Pacifist route should explain who Frisk is, and let's just say Chara is the default name for the player personality during the Genocide route. This last bit of information is barely accessible in the game files, and is usually learned through internet, so it isn't something you missed, per se, and it isn't spoilery because it's more or less a convention to address the player's soul during Genocide route.

Also: if you plan on doing the Genocide run, I'd advise you to learn about the consequences before facing Asgore. Expecially for the replaying value.

"Most gods throw dice, but Fate plays chess, and you don't find out til too late that he's been playing with two queens all along."
