Just finished Armada by Ernest Cline. Almost didn't finish it. Felt he was trying to push his knowledge of sci-fi movies into every action and that annoyed me. Also the ending.

I finally finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I decided I'll get started for like the third time on The Warlord's Legacy by Ari Marmell, partly because I seem to be missing book 2 of The Iron Druid Chronicles, and partly because I can't locate my Mercadian Masques novel.

How was American Gods? Someone gave it to me as a gift but haven't gotten around to reading it.

It's... Weird, let's put it that way. As you may or may not know, it's mostly about old gods coming to America. A lot of weird stuff goes down that suggests to me that Neil Gaiman did some research about a bunch of pagan rituals and beliefs, but which I can't say if are/were true. It's a very interesting read, though I found it relatively easy to put down because most of it doesn't seem to lead up to anything -- by which I mean, largely it feels like it's more a chain of life events rather than one event leading logically to the next (although they do pay off by the end). Be prepared for some brutal stuff, though.

That's what I fear, I read Trigger Warning by him and there were some stories that I loved, but others that I really, truly, hated.

Also, can't see the example of brutal stuff.

Finished Throne of the Crescent Moon. It didn't blow me away, but at the same time I can't really think of anything I would see it do differently or better. No real complaints, it was very solid and I'd recommend it.

Personally, I found that to be the most objectionable god-thing to happen in the story, but, I mean, it is based on some pretty brutal pagan beliefs and rituals, like tying a man naked to a tree for nine days and stabbing him in the side with a spear (Odin's vigil).

Set Firefight aside again, this time for Stross's Annihilation Score. Whoo, Laundry Files.

I stopped reading The Royal Assassin. I liked the first book, although I didn't like the end. I decided to give a chance to the second one.

Reading was a chore, so I decided to stop. More than one month I was just at the middle. Normally I read one book every two or three weeks.

I will start a classic now, Solaris by Stanislaw Lem.



Talking about mature anime, I remember a series that I stopped reading not because I didn't like the first book, but because it was too dark, even for me. The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart is a very dark book, it crossed my line of acceptance. Game of Thrones seems like a sunny stroll in the park by comparison. The book has no heroes nor antiheroes, only victims and villains. And to add insult, villains with hero shield.

Finished Horizon Storms, book 3 in The Saga of the Seven Suns.

As the series progresses, I for now continue to enjoy it. It's a big, sprawling space opera that takes advantage of being a long, complicated tale to tell a zillion stories. I'm not totally invested in all of them, but they're all competent enough to be fun. I'm gonna see the series through, but I don't know if I'd totally recommend it other than to simply get that particular experience.

I've wrapped up a couple of Michael Moorcock trilogies, The Eternal Champion:

and Corum:
Knight of the Swords
Queen of the Swords
King of the Swords

I found these with the new releases at my barnes and noble. I'd heard Moorcock mentioned as one of the big movers and shakers in fantasy so I gave them a shot. Surprisingly, grimdark has been a thing long before Warhammer. Both trilogies have it in spades, along with interplanar ships and a pleasant blend of science fiction and sorcery. Seems like Warhammer owes quite a bit to some of the Corum stuff. I never expected the hero to engage in genocide against the human race.

Finished Hibike! Euphonium 2. Moving on to Hibike! Euphonium 3.
I liked 2 a lot better than 1.

Still reading Solaris. but I started other one. I didn't find a title in english, but it would be The Assassin and The Prophet by Guillaume Prevost.

Finished Solaris. It was thin and not the best book I read, but a different book that raised some questions. Recommended.

Started Half a King by Joe Abercrombie. I love his books.

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow was a fun little fairy tale in novel form. I quite enjoyed it.


Next up is... erm, I don't actually know. Probably Scattered Suns, but if it doesn't arrive soon, I'll pull something else off my shelves.

Finished both The Assassin and The Prophet by Guillaume Prevost and Half a King by Joe Abercrombie. The first is moderately interesting, but badly written. The second I liked it.Typical Joe Abercrombie book, but he can still surprise me.

Not sure what to read next. My first instinct is to read Half a World, but probably I will read something else first.
