Hey all you peoples from internet land, listen up! A while back I made this post in response to a general discussion about fostering the No Goblins Allowed RPG community. The idea was that I would run a short, one-shot D&D adventure for new players who weren't very familiar to the game in an environment that wouldn't require significant long-term commitment or expert knowledge. That time has come! If you've never played D&D before and you've always wanted to (but were perhaps too intimidated to try), now's your chance to learn! The game will be relatively simple and not too challenging, but should still be plenty of fun. I have some pre-made characters available, or, if you're feeling a bit more creative, I can assist you in making your own character come to life.

I am looking for anywhere between 2 and 4 new players, and 1 not-so-new player (to help with explaining concepts that a DM can't).

Time commitments from this game won't be huge. I, myself, lead a busy lifestyle and can probably only realistically commit to updating the gamestate once every two days outside of combat, or once a day in combat. So if your own life prevents you from frequent access this might be just the game you were looking for.

Currently full, however if you're the new introductory type of player that I planned this entire thing for, let me know anyway and I might squeeze you in.

Players (4/5)
Tevish
Elijin
Cheekeyong
Lord LunaEquie is me

I'm a not-so-new player!

Really only that for 5e, though. Like, I've read all the core books but I haven't played it a ton. I've played the heck out of 3e though so some concepts come naturally.

You can count me in

It isn't, Eli. The slow pace nature of PbP help a lot in that regard. I'm actually in 3 games I can call active in this forum, and I'm looking for more.

Speaking of which, I can't call myself a new player anymore, and I would hate to take the spot of an actual inexperienced player, so I'll stay out of this. If you ever need a player to fill-in, though, PM me!

I guess the next question is what edition would be used, and how different are editions? I imagine if Im learning two editions at once from scratch, that will lead to a few...hiccups.

The game will apparently be using 5e, which is quite a different animal from 4e. It's a lot less formalized in telling you what you can do. It's generally a lot more freeform and has less rules and things to remember. In contrast, 4e shines if you're looking for grid-based tactical combat, thanks to the finely balanced numbers, importance of positioning, and emphasis on MMO-style fight dynamics.

^What they said. :V

Welcome aboard Eli. Don't worry, if you find it too much to handle then we can slow things down. That's the whole point of an introductory game, to help you learn the system at a pace you can handle.

It looks like this thread is pretty quiet. If you don't have enough players, you can count me in as someone who'd like to fill in as a more experienced roleplayer.

I joined my first irl 5e game about a week ago. Don't know if that qualifies me as "experienced" with the system or not. I quite enjoy it, though. There's a lot of freedom built in (and paladin is finally thematically interesting).

Not opposed to it, but going to keep the sign ups open a while longer just to see if any other new players take interest.

It's entirely possible that there are new players who would be interested that don't frequent this side of the boards. If anyone knows of any, let them know this sign up is here.

If I don't get any more responses, I'll consider starting the game up in a week.

In the meantime, the rest of you should decide if you want to create custom characters or use one of the pre-made ones I have. Here's a list of the pre-made characters available:
1. Bruenor, a stout Dwarf Fighter who wades fearlessly into battle with an Axe and Shield. He dreams of one day reclaiming his homeland for his people who were ousted from the mountains by a Dragon ages past.
2. Enialis, a graceful Wood Elf Ranger who effortlessly outmaneuvers his foes in combat while wielding a Sword in each hand. He hopes to honour his brethren by not returning to the glade that was his home until he has learned the ways of the world outside it.
3. Gerbo "Sparklegem" Timbers, a quirky Rock Gnome Wizard who uses a combination of his gadgetry and spells to confuse and overcome adversaries. He loves anything that sparkles, and hopes his travels will bring treasures beyond his wildest imagination.
4. Nulara Bareris, a wayward Human Monk whose calmness of mind and trained Martial Arts make her a force to be reconned with on the field of battle. She left her monastery to go on a pilgrimage of enlightenment, and has been adventuring ever since.
5. Krusk, a brutal Half-Orc Paladin of Heironeous, whose Oath of Vengeance lays waste to any evildoer who crosses his path. As a boy he didn't have the strength to stop his Orc father from murdering his Human mother; as a man he vows to lay down his life before he lets another wicked soul harm the innocent.

If someone could put a word in to have this sign-up thread featured on the home page that might also help draw in some interested newbies who don't know to look here.

Since I've got the books to reference, I think I'd like to create a custom character. I could hole-fill a party role, though that doesn't seem as mission critical in 5e as it has been in the past. How do you want to generate stats?

(I saw your link in the announcement thread and came down to investigate.)

I'd be interested in joining in, but I have a concern. I have only played 2 games of D&D at all (so, I guess around 3-4 hours?) and didn't get a whole lot done either time. These were 5e games, but outside of them I've never touched D&D and was constantly needing to reference the books of the friend whom brought me in (RuwinReborn, who mostly hangs around the M:EM). I get that you're intending this game for newcomers, but I don't even have books to reference. Is that a problem?

(Also Ruwin was kind enough to buy me a set of dice but I assume we'll be using the forum's dice-rolling feature for this?)

No problem at all. You're exactly the kind of player I planned this adventure for. And yes, we'll be using the forum dice feature.

@Tevish. Roll 4d6, drop lowest, repeat 5 times, assign where you want.

Luna, you should be able to get started with the free basic rulebook (48.3 MB). The only difference between those and the Player's Handbook is that the PHB offers more customization options; for a new player though, the basic rules should be just fine.

Will have a character by Friday. I'm thinking of playing a more supportish character, like a heal-focused cleric, so that the new players can have more of the spotlight.

Rolling for stats
chinkeeyong rolled 4d6b3 and got a total of 10:
1, 3, 6, 1

That's 17, 15, 12, 9, 10, 13. Otherwise known as "entirely respectable". 4 odds, which the munchkin in me whispers "play human..." in response to. It's not like human is a generally bad choice for flavor anyway, but I'll want to work out class and maybe background before finalizing race.

Welder modified the dice roller to support D&D character creation, for your convenience and information.
Code:
[dice]4d6b3[/dice]
[dice]4d6b3[/dice]
[dice]4d6b3[/dice]
[dice]4d6b3[/dice]
[dice]4d6b3[/dice]
[dice]4d6b3[/dice]

Although I'd advocate for standard array/point buy instead. (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8; or 27 points.)

Thanks, I'll definitely probably look at that later. Which reminds me, what happened to Fleets of Ossia? I'm sorry I didn't jump in before and I can't find your thread anymore @_@

I may not be on for the next two days, but I'll keep an eye on how this develops and give some thought to my character choice.
