This is the same bs they did 1.5 years ago and this time they snuck it under our noses hoping no one will notice before they end the forums this week.

Dastardly and conniving and sneaky are just a few of the politer words I have for them.

Out of the list 2hg seems like the one I figured enough people would of liked. Though I am sad to know that all this time Emperor was around and I never took advantage of it. That is how I learned to play and really liked it.

Seriously considering selling out. 2HG was pretty much the only format I played except for a few 1v1s with friends. It seems like every announcement they make anymore regarding casual is some sugar-coated arsenic pill. Its like they want to do away with casual altogether and have 100% of their player population be pay-to-play. At this point, I don't have much expectation for the company to ever make a decision that would make me feel at all interested in returning.

That does seem to be the case. With the pulling of the commander decks from the store and the not putting the new ones there to begin with it is starting to look like WOTC hates casual magic.

This sucks. 2hg was my favorite format. The explanation given is also bs..... it is less than one percent. Maybe, but they used less then 0.0001 percent of their time maintaining these formats anyway. Why not keep them around?

Very sad announcement. I think this is the most dissapointed I have ever been with WotC.

Soon they will be down to just standard and modern constructed. And then they will pull the plug on modern because it is played less than standard. I wonder what they will do once it is standard versus limited? Because they cannot possibly maintain both???!!!???

Initially I thought that Telir had transfered an old thread from the forums as part of the salvage project.
This is just a bad joke from WotC.

I wonder how they calculated their "percentage of play" statistic. If they just counted events fired, then they would have a horribly skewed statistic for multiplayer. One 2HG game serves twice the number of players and usually lasts longer than an entire 1v1 match. They would actually need to count hours of play time per player per event. I'm skeptical that they even have the functionality built into the game to do that.

Except I uninstalled that game after it tried to eat my brand new pc in an update. Probably not going to reinstall it ever again.

So glad we no longer have any official way to discuss these "articles" where WOTC wi8ll ever see that discussion. With each passing proclamation from on high, my desire to play wanes. What, precisely is different about managing a 5-player Commander game vs. a 4-player one?
Step 1) Tribal Wars is gone...
Step 2) Oh, we ***ed up, Tribal wars is back.
Step 3) All the fun is gone (including tribal).
Because....
(Paraphrased) "We've done these things since MODO began, but we can't do them any more. It's all just too hard."

I have now done my civic duty and emailed them at [email protected] .

I hope they can see that deleting the formats is a stupid decision.

I was about to do the same, and was going to post copies of my email here and on the MTGO forum in the hopes that others might send it or something similar. I suspect its a futile action, but digital stationary and ink are free so all it really costs to try is time.

EDIT:
Sent. Here's the copy:

Code:
Dear WotC Staff,

I am writing to petition you NOT to remove the casual formats listed in this week's announcement - particularly 2HG.

These formats may make up a minority of games fired, but for some of us, they are the whole reason for playing.  For me, teamwork and table banter are big facets of my enjoyment of the game.  I rarely play anything BUT 2HG.

Multiplayer formats also serve more players and last longer per game than 1v1, so the actual amount of time spent per format per player might be significantly larger than the number of tables fired per format.  If you just counted games fired and based your play statistic on this number, your results will misrepresent the actual player time spent.

Removing these play options will not make the game better and will actually ruin it for some of us.

Sincerely,
<IRL Name>,  MTGO:TheFlakyMage

Anyone who cares enough to protest is welcome to copy, edit, and send this.

I wonder how they calculated their "percentage of play" statistic...

They chose the calculation that yielded the 1% figure. Other ways to calculate, such as "20% of the active player base plays these casual formats" wouldn't have made for a compelling story.

I wonder if these are steps to getting rid of free play on the system all together? For most of these formats I am not sure if they even put much effort into keeping them going. They seem to have pretty major issues that tend to go on the never going to get fixed list. This leads me to think that they aren't doing anything extra for the formats and if things happened to have worked then that is just gravy.

These formats (which get roughly 0% play) will remain :

Planechase
Momir Basic
Freeform
Freeform Vanguard

What would be useful now is a player written deck legality checker.
Suggest 100s and tw for first two format checks.

Hey!

I have played more than 1,000 momir basic matches over the last 2 years (...I kept a record). It gets a large percentage of my play.

I never play momir, because I never see anyone playing it. Cauchy, I'm amazed that you've seen that much play.

I mainly play it as a sanctioned 2-man queue. It usually fires within minutes after joining the queue. Before PP's, the activity depended on the value of a booster.

There might be some of that legality already implemented in gatherling.com
