Maybe. I like it because it has a sense of wonder, while still being in a context I can more easily associate with. I don't know how peasant lived in the medieval age, and I'm no physics major, so I feel like I stumble in the darkness in sci-fi. I also really like literally everything World of Darkness.

I'm not going to veto sci-fi or anything, but if I have a vote, it's certainly at urban fantasy.
If we do sci-fi, I'm probably just going to make a bunch of alien races or something.

You don't have be a physics major to enjoy hard sci-fi, you just need some level of tolerance for convoluted explanations.
Anyway, I confirm.

So Sci-fi with alien race showing first contact with humans will be the theme of the game.

Now we must choose the starting and the ending point, and tone for these points (light or dark).

My proposal:

Beginning: Exodus from home planet (Dark)

Ending: First Contact with humans (Light)

Sounds good. Having it be aliens making contact with humans mixes it up a bit.

I don't really know the mechanics of the game, but if that means our games takes place within those two points in time, then that seems pretty weird. You exclude yourself from talking about the species as a culture, and the consequences of their meeting, which I assumed to be the central theme of the game.

The mechanic is simple. Each round one player is nominated Lens. He chooses the Focus of that round. Everybody then take turns creating a period, event or scene that occurs between those points, using the Focus as a guideline.

When it returns to the Lens turn, the round is closed (the Lens creates two things). The last player before the Lens chooses the Legacy (kind of a bookmark) and the player that started right after the Lens is now the new Lens.

So you can create infinite periods, events and scenes between those periods.

so... yes that seems pretty weird? You can't make the contact with humans a theme of the game if that's when it ends.

Weird is more or less the objective. What happens later, after first contact, doesn't matter, we are telling the story until they get there.

Anyway jumping to the next step: Step 3 - Create a palette – Add or Ban ingredients that can be used. Here players take turns deciding what they want in the story or things they don't want. In other words they create the rules to be obeyed.

I will start. When each player chooses one rule, we start a new round.

NO - Faster than light travel.

Remember that these rules are still cooperative. If you didn't like a rule you can still ask for the player to remove it or change it. Each person must add at least one rule or pass the chance to create one.

I will wait until 09/11, then I will consider you passed the opportunity.

I don't think I will play, but I will also try to keep an eye on this.

@Mown: Remember that you can be aware of someone before meeting them. Maybe you are heading towards Earth because you picked up a deep space probe from there, and you spend the entire journey building a religion based around the culture that created the artifact. Or you have super-advanced telescope technology which lets you observe Earth, but you cannot get a better picture than spotting that there are large light sources that you assume to be cities at first, but as you get closer you keep getting clearer information. Or you picked up some old TV broadcasts, and think that Earth is like that. Or even better, you sent a probe to Earth long ago that told you that it was inhabitable and without advanced civilization, but that was a long time ago... There are a lot of ways to make the build up to first contact be interesting.

What Aaarrrgh said.

I was trying not to say anything to avoid influencing the narrative, but the possibilities are endless. Humans could still be cave men, or they could have evolved to energy beings. The alien race could be pacific like ET or attack the humans in an Independence Day style. The exodus could start one billion years before the encounter or they could be in another universe.

The only obstacle is your own imagination.

I'm not saying that there aren't possibilities within those points in time, I'm just saying that if your theme is "showing the first contact between two species", then I would expect it to actually show the first contact between said species, not just the events leading up to it. It feels to me as if you are writing a story about a couple's first date, except the story takes place from the time of the invitation up until they meet up. What about, like, the entire date?

Anyway, as far as ingredients go, I think I'll ban myself, sorry.

OK, I don't know how active I can be, but I'm willing to give this a try if you'll have me. I want to increase my creative writing output, and this seems like a good way.

Of course you can join. I don't think this game will be very demanding, maybe one or two post per week is more than enough.

Start by creating a rule. Still waiting fot TPmanw to create his rule too.

Sounds good. And if someone has a suggestion for a name, feel free to present it. Right now I am clueless (without really knowing what the adventure will be) with the name just Sci-Fi Adventure.
