Indeed, plus there are two sides to the rogue. The PHB has the brawny and trickster rogue. Maybe an abnormaly tall Goblin who has high Strength?
Or, if you want a different class, maybe warlock. Goblins are good at that.

Alright, broad fielded question, players DM and 4E regulars feel free to answer:

Does the balance mean in a 4-6 player campaign, mean doubling up on classes (Or this class specifically) reduces the chances at success? Sure, I was going to create a similar one, but I took a backseat to see how things play out. Early bird gets the worm and all. I was assuming in a small game diversity matters. But if you guys are saying its okay, then I will go with my original character thoughts.

So...yay or nay / thoughts?

Depends. I would say a party needs a healer (priest or shaman), a tank (warrior or paladin), and a good mix of ranged DPS (warlock, mage, druid, and archer hunter) and melee DPS (two-handed hunter, monk, rogue). A crowd control (mage, druid) is also good, but if we bad to eliminate one, it would be the first to go, then the melee DPS. So far we have a tank - a sword'n'board at that - and a melee DPS, so I'd say we should try to get in a healer and a ranged DPS. Healer is an absolute must-have.

The standard 4e encounters and DM tables are balanced for a five-player party, so if we have only three party members, DCG may have to rework some of his encounters for them to be a fair challenge. We'll also face some problems because of specialization - if we fight swarms of small enemies the whole campaign, we'll be wishing we had a mage with scorching burst. On the flip side, other kinds of encounters, like ones against individually tough brutes, will be much easier because we have two strikers who can focus-fire them down. Ultimately, it doesn't boil down to a better or worse experience - just different.

The good part is, I think a party with a fighter and two rogues would be pretty workable. John can soak damage and tie up enemies in melee while you two flank and/or sneak attack from the sidelines. If we pack more area-effect exploits and more healing to make up for the lack of a dedicated controller or healer, we should be able to survive just fine.

And of course, we can always opt never to fight fair. Who needs to optimize for tactical battles when we can get other people to fight for us, or sneak around the enemy without them being the wiser?

Very doable! You would be somewhat limited in what powers you took - some require a crossbow or light blade, but some require a light blade - but there are enough to make it a feasable build. One of the at-wills you can choose even adds your Cha mod as damage (Sly Flourish).
Now that we have two strikers and a defender, I would suggest whoever hasn't made a character yet make a healer (priest or even shaman).

Remember that you can make a Stealth check any time you're out of sight of the enemy to become hidden. That can do pretty incredible things for your sneak attack damage.

Plus if you take Artful Dodger instead of Brutal Scoundrel you get a bonus to AoO equal to your Cha mod - a very valuable thing for when things get in your grill but you want to pop them with a crossbow bolt anyway.

Now all I have to do is take those good rolls and ruin them through misplacement!

Also character sheeting is making me realise how critically un-creative I am.

Haha, it's ok, it's easy. I'd put my highest in Dex, since you use ranged weapons, and second highest in Cha. Your next two are 14s, so they're equal. Maybe put them in Str and Con? So you're still good at melee weapons and you have good hit points. Then Int and Wis, in whichever order. Also don't forget your racial bonuses - you put that 16 and 15 in Dex and Cha and they become 18 and 17!

I don't get your class restrictions. A Barbarian, say, is essentially a Fury Warrior (save for using less weapons), while Shamans are vaguely similar to the WoW equivalent at best, and several others as well for particular specializations (like any healing spec, but that is primarily because of how 4E is designed).
Anyway, I'll bite, just because I want to participate in more RPGs, although I'm apprehensive of any GM who doesn't advocate for point buy, at least for longer campaigns.

How resilient is the system to making changes to damage types? Say I wanted to play a shadow priest, and having just perused over the books a bit, would argue that the best fit is an Invoker dealing Necrotic and Frost damage instead of Radiant, Fire and Thunder. Would such a change have massive balance ramifications?

This is what I got! Greatly appreciate Gnome taking the time to walk through it with me.

Steve is a simple goblin, who swears he's honest and sensible folk. Everyone else swears it too. They swear it so often, that some have taken to questioning just how honest he is. Nothing a quick bout of adventure to give everyone time to forget his name wont solve.
