Luna wants submissions early so this is early.

I'm submitting this arrangement to be the official canon arrangement of the Jakkard folk song Red Jackie. I have Raven's blessing to do so, which if you doubt me for some reason you can find in the Music Shoppe. anyway:

Title: Red Jackie
Author: words by RavenOfTheBlack, music and recording by razorborne

Unequivocal Yea. I'm still of the opinion that this song would work best as a pub song, sung by a crowd over some drink, but it's great that you did this thing.

And I appreciate it, thank you.

I was thinking of it more as a campfire song. it feels weird to me to be singing a character-driven ballad (in the classic sense) like this as a group drinking song. Centaur Wine feels much more natural for that. I need to write that...

I'm really not sure what I'm allowed or disallowed to do here. I mean, I wrote the lyrics for this song, and they are already voted into the Archive, but I contributed nothing to the music of this arrangement or to the vocals, so I don't think I qualify as a collaborator, either.

What do people think? Would it be improper for me to vote "Yea" on this? (Because if I can vote, I'm absolutely voting "Yea." This is beyond awesome.)

I think what's being voted on here is just the arrangement, which as you say you weren't involved in beyond agreeing that it was a good choice for a fast piece, so I think you can probably vote if you want, but then I'm probably not the best source either.

I think it's totally reasonable for you to vote here, Raven, in the same way that it'd be reasonable for me to vote on a story using Kirsh that I didn't actually write--this is a transformative use of your work, basically.

As for myself, I'm definitely voting yea on this. This is delightful!

One thing I'm curious about though: this is a vote for the arrangement... so does that imply that any variations of this song that use this arrangement are implicitly "in" the archive? If someone else did a straight recording of this arrangement, would we vote on it?

Hmm, good question, Keeper. I guess I'm assuming that we're voting on the rendition as much as anything else. So, were I to go and record a version myself, using the same music, you would all still be free to vote it down on the grounds that my voice creates sadness in anyone who knows music...

:D

(I totally voted Yea, by the way.)

I don't tend to think of performances as creative pieces in that way. not that they're not creative, but like...

ok, so my thinking is this: my view is that the vote is whether or not this is what Red Jackie sounds like, not whether or not this is what Red Jackie sounds like when razorborne sings it. razorborne is not, to my knowledge, a canon character. I feel like if someone else recorded the same melody over the same basic arrangement, it wouldn't be worth voting because, hey, that's just what it sounds like when someone else sings it, which is sort of a common thing to happen with folk songs anyway. maybe if someone recorded a different arrangement, like "this is what it sounded like when the wandering troubadour Runcelfruss reimagined the piece as a dirge" or "this is what it sounds like when it's sung in a tavern as a drinking song", but if it's the same arrangement, then it's basically the same song.

That's a fair point. Either way, though, I'm comfortable voting "Yea" on it.

With enough drinks, any song can be a pub song. :D

Also, this is crazy cool! "Yea" from me.
