I am curious if Leagues have had any impact on card prices. Has it increased demand?

More specifically, will Modern Leagues impact the value of Modern staples?

I don't track card prices enough to know if leagues have had an impact. However, I bought cards for the first time in forever to build a deck with to play in a league.

And how did it go for you? Also, you bought a standard deck right before rotation?

I guess according to my own theories then more players buying into standard should do nothing to the prices because of redemption.

But if more people buy into non-redeemable modern cards then prices would go up. Maybe it would be possible to front run these people before they acquire their modern deck.

Is there any information on when modern leagues is expected to start?

From my own observations (so take it with a hunk of salt) it seems that the current draft set keeps pretty low. Then once it is no longer the current draft set prices jumped. I noticed it a lot with the M15 set where everyone got free drafts and it was super cheap for as long as it was drafted. Then cards climbed up when Kahns came out.

The tough part is in figuring out what the cards that will be used in decks are going to be. I remember the hits I've had but I am pretty sure I have had more misses. Which is why I rarely buy into the cards unless they are "pennies" in cost.

Could you list some of your hits?

I wonder if it is an online only thing or if it also happens in paper?
And how exactly the timing works?

So for M15 I remember Chord of Calling and the Pain Lands. Its not really that great of stretch as they were pricey before and dropped like a rock after the release.

Usually try and go by any rare dual lands, rare removal, and any cheap PW. Also any card reprinted that was expensive before but drops after the reprint. I am no expert but those seem to be the safer best to pick up when they are cheap.

Cards I am making sure I have 4 ofs that are relatively cheap from Origins:

Exquisite Firecraft, Languish, Pyromancer's Goggles, Knight of the White Orchid, Thopter Spy Network, Honored Hierarch, Gilt-Leaf Winnower, Sigil of the Empty Throne

Knight of the White Orchid and Sigil of the Tempty Throne had value before the reprint. They have little value now so I wanted to get them now as they should eventually start to regain value. Exquisite Firecraft seems like too much value to not find a place somewhere especially in a possible eternal deck. Languish is a 4 mana "wrath". Pyromancer's Goggles is a little expensive but it certainly seems like it is powerful enough to impact somewhere. Thopter Spy Network already had a deck for a little while and seems like it could still find a home. Honored Hierarch I think I am hoping too much and will probably never find a home, but its cheap enough right now I think its worth the risk. Gilt-Leaf Winnower is a removal spell that leaves a creature behind.

The fact that I know little about standard or how to play constructed was further reinforced.

I bought some cards, not a "deck". I collect play-sets by playing a lot of limited. I bought perhaps a dozen cards to complete the deck. I'd estimate that less than half of what I bought is rotating (assuming that Origins isn't rotating for a bit). I wanted to play a certain deck in the standard league. Set rotations were immaterial to doing this.

It seems like it is a little too late for me to front run a modern league... :)

I was just lucky enough to pull a origins Jace from a draft. It seems like it is on a fast upward trend.

If I were to speculate I guess that I would buy Thoughtseize within the next month and sell need the end of next modern season (whenever that is). But I think that Pantera Canes' suggests are better because it is a more diversified guess.

I think I need one more Thoughtseize to have 4. I am going to get at least that. Those are just my guesses for the latest set so we can see how well they do or how much of a miss I was on.

When RTR rotated I ended up completing a lot of 4 ofs on that set. Did the same thing with Snap Caster Mage when INN was rotating. I regret not getting Chord of Calling when M15 was the draft set but I guess I just hoped it was drafted so much in the free drafts I could wait longer.

Glimmervoid & Arcbound Ravager are at highs right now. I suppose they could go up more, but I wasn't banking on that & traded them for about 100% profit.

Ensnaring Bridge is also at like an all time high right now. Traded my playset not long ago for about 500% profit.

Right now, I'm looking at Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. I'm thinking he's at a low with a good chance to go up in the future.

Why is ensnaring bridge so high? I guess some deck is using it. Is it a temporary spike or when will the bubble burst? I have a playset but I like to use it in a hypnotic spectra tribal deck.

I'm not sure why ensnaring bridge is so high now. Not sure what deck is using it. I remember splurging on this card a while back at about 5 tix each...now they are hovering close to all time high of 30 tix...

Sold mine at the peak of Origins release. I've got a feeling the price is going to come down at some point. I just see no reason for the incredibly high price.

Also, wanted to add that Temple Scry lands at an all time low now that they have rotated out of standard. Good for modern multi-color decks.

Ensnaring Bridge is a staple in modern right now. It has had several big time finishes recently and that's why it is pricy.

Thanks for this. I've been wondering ever since I sold mine.

Lantern Control in Modern:

LSV and Paul Cheon have been pushing it. I am sure there are others as well.

It may come down some but it has a new price memory now. The only thing that will help is a reprint or a flashback draft.

They should reprint it together with Liliana of the Veil. But they should notify me first so that I can sell my playset.

Hmph. They can add me to that mailing list, too. I'm still smarting from buying the MOCS FoWs immediately before they were announced in VMA. And then they reprinted my Flooded Strands...

BTW, does anyone know whether its better to hold Standard Mythic foils until close to when they rotate or sell them immediately? I pulled a shiny Undergrowth Champion in the prerelease and wasn't sure whether to sell right away (it was the last day of the prerelease so the crazy "first-have" buyers had already gotten theirs, I think), or wait till close to the end of the redemption period to see if it would spike as people scramble to finish their foil sets.

I usually try to look at mtggoldfish and see the price history of similar cards for such questions.

mtggoldfish is also my go-to. I've played for over a year now without purchasing any more tix & I've kept up with each standard rotation.

I just noticed that Altar of Dementia is at an all time high. Black Vise made a quick spike up to a near all-time high after being unbanned.
