The game will be hosted on Zelda Dungeon as a crossover event, where we hope to obtain the required number of players. If you are new to Zelda Dungeon, you must make at least 5 posts in their forums in areas that count toward your post total (hint: the mafia section does not count), else your account might be flagged as a bot/spam. So go set that up and make some posts so you'll be good to go when the game starts. And don't forget to sign up there, cuz this sign up list here is no longer valid.
TO SIGN-UP: 1) Type "in" in this thread 2) Send me a message with an email, Twitter handle, OR a Discord username that you check semi-regularly. The email/discord/twitter handle is so I can ensure you're serious about playing this massive game and so I can get ahold of you when the time comes.
Two years ago, in the wake of what has become known as the boardpocalypse, I hosted a Mafia game like no other back on the mothership - Px2. This Mafia game was my crowning achievement as a game designer, having spent over a year preparing and refining it. With the fate of Px2 still uncertain my game was ushered forth under the banner of a yearly invitational to try to salvage what was left of the community while bringing in new blood to bolster it. Although my game ended up being the last Mafia game hosted there, to my recollection, it was an incredible success. Sure, the game was plagued by a severe number of lurkers and a crippling design flaw (no Day deadlines) which dragged the game out to almost a point of abandonment at times, but the rich flavour and exciting game mechanics kept enough of the players interested to see it through to the end. I don't think there is a single player from that game (excepting maybe those that I had to replace) who did not enjoy it.
That game was of course none other than... MAXIMUM CARNAGE: A Spider-Man Mafia.
Click on Carnage to visit the original game thread!
Ah, what a game it was. Maximum Carnage combined my favourite web-slinging wall-crawling superhero with my love of Mafia design into a beautiful red velvet cake with a deliciously entertaining serial psychopath icing on top. What more could you ask for in game flavour? In fact, as I sat down to write this I couldn't help but read some of that original game and before I knew what was happening an hour had passed and I was on page 10 thoroughly caught up in the excitement of it all! Now that's an impressive statement: if a game you designed can still capture your interest two years past, you must have done something right. Just thinking of some of the more unorthodox, yet exciting, game mechanics and roles that were featured in MC brings a smile to my face. To list a few, Maximum Carnage featured:
A publicly outed, yet seemingly unkillable Mafia Don on Day 1 Two Spider-Man roles present A secret cult-like role separate from the main Mafia Personal wincons as well as team wincons Individual Lynch Thresholds Unique abilities, such as the Newspaper Editor's ability to include messages in the opening posts of each Day Carnage role-playing killing off NPC characters in every post resulting in real, game altering effects And many, many more
But don't take my word for how awesome this game was, see for yourself:
Example Role PM
You are Norman Osborn, the original Green Goblin.
But wait a minute...Didn’t he DIE?!
Yes. Yes he did.
At least, that’s what he wants you to think. But you should know better. There’s ALWAYS an Osborn in the wings waiting to jump out at you. In reality, being the brilliant strategist that he is, Norman Osborn found a way to convincingly fake his death. I know what you’re thinking, “But I SAW the body, it was open casket, and they put him in the ground.” If there is one thing you can say about Norman it’s that he is very thorough. He wasn’t going to leave a loose end like not including a body that was of course virtually indistinguishable from the genuine article.
Yes, Norman survived. That Goblin formula might have driven him mad but it made him tough as nails.
So what is ol’ Norman up to these days? Well, he’s plotting of course, plotting to ruin Spider-Man’s life. Or should I say Peter Parker’s life, because this vendetta has never been about Spider-Man versus the Green Goblin. It’s ALWAYS been about Peter Parker versus Norman Osborn.
See?
Now, as Norman you’re always in the know. You might be far removed from society in a secret island getaway home, but that doesn’t mean you don’t know exactly what’s going on back in New York. You’re a powerful man after all. Part of knowing everything all the time means you sometimes get to hear unfortunate news, like how your only son Harry Osborn recently died in a fight with Spider-Man while following in your footsteps as the second Green Goblin. You hated Parker before, but now more than ever he must pay. Oh, you could easily end his life. It’d be a simple matter really. You could even do it yourself. But that’s not enough. You don’t want him to die. You want him to live and suffer as you’ve suffered. And he will. You’re just waiting for the perfect time to strike.
You are the Goblin-Aligned Archenemy of Spider-Man. Your win condition is to ruin Spider-Man’s life in the worst imaginable way. Once he has known utter defeat and begs for death, only then will you give it to him. To accomplish this, Spider-Man must be alive and be no longer able to win the game when you activate your “I AM THE GREEN GOBLIN!” ability.
Your Personal Motivation is for your presence in the game to remain unknown until such time as you are ready to win. He must not suspect you are behind the scenes orchestrating everything.
You don’t have a Lynch-Threshold because you cannot be Lynched.
Your ABILITIES:
Original Goblin Formula (Passive): The original formula has made you incredibly resistant to bodily harm, you are very hard to kill. It has also made you insane, which has...side-effects.
True Nemesis (Passive): You know that JayDreven is The Amazing Spider-Man.
Strength in Numbers (Passive): During the Day you may Vote as normal for a Mafia game.
OsCorp (Active): You’re still pulling the strings at your company, even though everyone thinks you’re dead. Through OsCorp you can make hidden votes. You send them by PM to me and their source is not revealed in the game thread (but they are counted in votecounts). This does not grant you extra votes, it just allows you to make any votes you have in secret if you so choose (in other words, if you have a vote on someone publicly and you use this power to vote someone else, your public vote is removed)
Pulling the Strings (Passive): You control the voting abilities of all Goblin-Aligned players. You can use their votes through “OsCorp” (hidden) or through the player (public).
Powerful Influence (Passive): You can post in the game thread at any time, even at times the GameMod strictly prohibits posting.
New Goblin Formula (Active): Useable at any time up to a maximum of four times in the game (but still subject to the rules of only one Active ability useable per Phase). This new version of the formula makes its subject incredibly susceptible to influence while still making them stronger to boot. Target player becomes Goblin-Aligned, gets a permanent +1 to their Lynch-Threshold, and gains access to your OsNet quicktopic. Their win condition changes to “If Norman Osborn wins, you win.” Be careful, some players are immune to this formula.
Offshore Accounts (Active): At Night you may target a player and steal an Item from them. If they have multiple Items you choose which one to steal.
[Item] Goblin Glider (Passive): As long as you have your Goblin Glider, you can’t be tracked.
Master Planner (Active): During the Night you may have target Goblin-Aligned player kill another target player.
Eliminate Liability (Passive): If a Goblin-Aligned player reaches their Lynch-Threshold -1 (one vote away from being Lynched), they are immediately killed and their role information is not revealed publicly.
I AM THE GREEN GOBLIN! (Active): Useable once per game during the Day. You return to New York, become the Green Goblin again, and challenge Spider-Man to your final duel of which only one of you will come out alive.
Secrets: (Mod's eyes only!) Regarding his win condition: Norman Osborn's win condition involves him activating the ability "I AM THE GREEN GOBLIN!" at an opportune time late in the game. The ability auto-targets The Amazing Spider-Man, if he still lives, or The Spectacular Spider-Man if the former is already dead or missing. At the time the ability is activated, the Spider-Man who is targeted must have failed in his win condition or personal motivation without chance of reprisal. If this is the case, both the Spider-Man targeted and the Green Goblin become publicly revealed and are made to be the only possible lynch choices that Day. If it is activated at any other time or under any other conditions, Norman Osborn loses and is instantly lynched. When the two characters enter their final showdown everyone who doesn't have a voting ability is given a temporary voting ability that will last the remainder of the Day and any ability that would reduce or block someone's ability to vote on this Day fails; all living players may participate in this vote. If one of them is not able to be lynched at all even by having all votes placed on them, that character automatically wins the showdown. If neither are able to be lynched at all, the Green Goblin automatically wins the showdown. As long as both are theoretically able to be lynched, the Day plays out until one reaches their normal lynch threshold. If Mary Jane is dead during the showdown all votes against Spider-Man count double. If Spider-Man ends up being the winner, his "reward" is that he is now confirmed to be Spider-Man by the MOD for the rest of the game (though, not confirmed to be town). If the Green Goblin is the winner, he is removed from the game (into the Missing pile), though is still able to affect the game in a number of ways (see "Post-winning" below).
Regarding his personal motivation: His personal motivation requires two things: 1) that whichever Spider-Man targeted by "I AM THE GREEN GOBLIN!" never catches wind that Norman Osborn or the Green Goblin are players in the game, and 2) that no Goblin-Aligned player be allowed to flip and have their alignment publicly revealed upon death.
Norman Osborn has the following secret (hidden) abilities:
Delusions of Grandure (passive): Though his insanity has led him to believe he is unlynchable, in reality his lynch threshold is equal to Majority +1+X, where X is the number of living or dead goblin aligned players in the game. Secret Identity (Passive): The first time in the game that Norman Osborn is targeted by an alignment or role revealing investigative ability, it fails. Multiple Goblinality Disorder (Passive): At Night there is a chance (determined by a die roll) that Norman Osborn receives messages from a cryptically vague voice that may or may not help him reach his win condition. On a 3 to 6, the message is helpful (true), on a 2 there is no message, and on a 1 the message is harmful (lie).
When he injects a player with his "New Goblin Formula", that player receives the following changes to his or her role:
Quote:
You are no longer X-Aligned. You are now a Goblin-Aligned <insert role info here>. Your win condition changes to "Ahlyis must win the game." Your Personal Motivation is unchanged. You get a permanent +1 to your Lynch Threshold. You gain the following abilities:
Just a Pawn (Passive): Ahlyis gains control over any and all voting abilities you have. You cannot make a vote or unvote without his say. He can choose to make your vote public (through telling you who to vote) or secret (through telling me where your vote goes). Any restrictions on your voting still apply. Mindless Martyr (Passive): If Ahlyis would die by any method other than a Lynch, you die in his stead. No Loose Ends (Passive): If you die by any method other than a Lynch you leave no record of your role or alignment for the living players. OsNet (Passvie): You have gained access to an encrypted intranet server called OsNet for discussing plans with your allies.
The rest of your abilities are unchanged.
In the event that the player is Mafia-Aligned, they also get this:
Quote:
Your Personal Motivation has also changed, becoming "Under no circumstances will you reveal or even hint at the identities of your former Mafia-associates either in the game thread or in the OsNet server (see below). You must maintain that your previous alignment was Self-Aligned and not Mafia-Aligned with your new alies."
You no longer have access to the Mafia Quicktopic.
Post-winning: If Norman Osborn wins, he is removed from the game and receives the following changes to his role:
Quote:
Congratulations, you win the game!
You have been removed from the game due to your win. But you're Norman Osborn, no one can remove you from anything.
You lose the following abilities:
Strength in Numbers (Passive) New Goblin Formula (Active) Offshore Accounts (Active) [Item] Goblin Glider (Passive) Master Planner (Active) Eliminate Liability (Passive) I AM THE GREEN GOBLIN! (Active)
But you GAIN the following ability:
Perfected Goblin Formula (Active): Useable during the Night only. This improved version of the formula still makes its subject incredibly susceptible to influence while still making them stronger to boot, but doesn't have the unstable qualities of previous versions. Target player becomes Goblin-Aligned, gets a permanent +1 to their Lynch-Threshold, and gains access to your OsNet quicktopic. Their win condition changes to “If Norman Osborn wins, you win,” AND their personal motivation is changed to "Stop Carnage." Some players are still immune to this formula.
Also, you and your Goblin lackeys are no longer considered a Threat to the Town.
See what I mean? That was one role PM. Out of 24. I don't go half tilt when it comes to Spider-Man. And it is as I sit here reminiscing about all of this Spidey-Mafia nonsense that one question comes to mind. Well, okay, two questions. One: what to refill my empty Spider-Man glass with - water, lemonade, or ginger ale?
And, perhaps more importantly, two: how to top such an epic undertaking now that I have raised my own bar so high?
There of course is only one possible answer to that question...and I don't mean lemonade...
That's right, I'm doing a sequel! But not just any sequel, a sequel that promises to unsolve what is arguably the greatest mystery of the wall-crawler's career! This is what the book has to say about this illustrious tale: "For years, the mystery of the Hobgoblin's true identity has plagued not only Spider-Man and his friends, but also fans! Now, all is revealed - and the answers will shock you! As the Hobgoblin stands exposed at last, the threats of Norman Osborn and the gregarious Green Goblin wait in the wings! Featuring all of your favourite Spidey characters, from Mary Jane to Betty Brant to Robbie Robertson! The Hobgoblin Lives, and Spider-Man's days may be numbered!"
I couldn't have written a more action packed hook myself!
Stay tuned, True Believers, for this All New, All Daring, Spectacular, Amazing, incredible action-packed tale is coming to a No Goblins Allowed Mafia game near you soon!
Let's see if this time I don't have to selfhammer myself as a softconfirmed town governor/doctor that gets to pick the player to protect after being informed of who's dying each night.
"That winter, the fireplace was never without a crackling blaze in its belly. The boiled wine we drank was undoubtedly middling and cheap, but she said, with a smile, "I've never had wine this good before." And though I didn't say anything, I felt the same way."
i flaked on your original game and intermittently feel guilty about it while watering flowers or purchasing milk

I took a look at your previous game to see some of the other roles (too many and too long) and they are very flavorful and inventive, although sometimes I disagree with some choices.

This one I have some interest, but my schedule is very complicated. I will have my work load reduced from 82 to 64 hours per week in the next three months.

Maximum Carnage Mafia was awesome. I think my fondest memories of Px2 are the extreme variant Mafia games: Carnage, Colonial, Schizo, Sunflowers for Rag, the 1-day super-invitational, running Conspiracy, to a lesser extent Star Wars...
