City of Legend is one of my favorite cards in NGAC.

It has a reasonable power level, encourages deckbuilding that's normally the opposite of what you should do, and is still somehow competitive enough for me to play it as a 4 of in some lists.

because I want to get a mix of NGAC applications, flavor stuff, and other tidbits. it'd be boring if every one was just "hey play this card" when there's so much more going on.

Not many cards have history in the format, and most are basically "reasons to play this card".

Something like entomb is definitely going to have a mechanical focus, so it's reasonable to have a card that doesn't.

While I agree that it is nice to have some variety and that this occasion is an excellent one to address the history of the forum in general, I wish the post was just talking about how awesome the card is. You know, because it is so great and not for any other reason.

I guess I should give my take on the card: It is awesome. I made this when I was playing around with a set aimed at Timmy. It was battle cruiser magic with a cmc matters theme and this card was a great way to encourage playing fatties. It was chosen by the people to be my invitational card because it is awesome and I like it and I knew it would be useful in a lot of decks.

*"To YMTC it up" means to design cards that have value mostly from a design perspective. i.e. you would put them in a case under glass in your living room and visitors could remark upon the wonderful design principles, with nobody ever worring if the cards are annoying/pointless/confusing in actual play

Lands make for awesome invitational cards. This one is no exception. It reminds me of Temple of the False God; I'm not even sure which is better, but they're both good at providing a mana boost to a very specific sort of deck. Not broken and simply wonderful.
