Hearthstone's "stack" isn't really a stack, has very little documentation, and might as well not be a real thing because you can't actually do anything with it.

activated abilities, board size, deck and hand size, instant speed interactions, higher number of card types. a magic game almost always has a whole hell of a lot more going on than a hearthstone game does. Magic is extraordinarily more complex than hearthstone and that's a bad thing for the most part. A major difference in where complexity comes from is that hearthstone tries to keep the game simple. They use less text per card, hide and automate more processes, and cut down on the number of small choices you have to make.

hearthstone does have a card that interacts with the graveyard.

Resurrect does not interact with the graveyard, because Hearthstone doesn't have one. It randomly summons a copy of a creature that's died this game.

For all intents and purposes, we would have to have a non-random interaction with cards we have already used.

Complexity for complexity's sake is a bad thing. That's coming from a guy whose YmtC works included dimensional depth levels, soul costs, a second (Qlippothic) color wheel and a 700 card block based around the stack.

Hearthstone is a far more elegant game than Magic.

When I think of Magic's depth, I think of its fundamental philosophical and theoretical concepts: Card Advantage, Tempo, Philosophy of Fire, Fundamental Turn, Control vs. Beatdown, Flores's 3-Stage theory... all the way to Theory of Everything.

And the funny thing is, all of that is perfectly applicable and relevant to Hearthstone. Which is no coincidence, of course - its authors paid very close attention to what really keeps Magic ticking and kept all the good/deep stuff while getting rid of excess complexity.

Yes, Hearthstone is a turn-based game. So what?

If your point is that discrete interactivity makes the game more shallow, then Mortal Kombat is a deeper game than Civilization V.

although complexity will probably be subjective under most useful metrics, you'd be hard pressed to find a pereson that its easier to teach the rules of magic to than the rules of hearthstone.

complexity isn't always bad and some people like complexity, its a staple of roguelike designs.

You are overgeneralizing my comment. But it IS my point that interactivity for card games increases its depth.

Your analogy is moronic but I will humor it. First, the two games are of different genre and thus their "depth" are measured differently. But if you put Mortal Kombat besides Street Fighters, the depth of either game does correlate to each games' interactivity as well to a degree.

P.S. Are you implying MtG is not also a turn-based game? What do you mean by So What then?

From a non-game design standpoint, Hearthstone has vastly inferior art and flavor, despite the voice acting and flashy visual effects. It's ten times worse with fanservice than Magic ever was - just compare Jaina to any iteration of Chandra. I think Magic's creative team does a much better job of catering to a mature and introspective audience.

On top of that, Magic encourages community-building in a way Hearthstone does not. I've made dozens of friends through FNM and my local Magic community. In contrast, Hearthstone is largely a solitary activity. It's a constructed treadmill that lacks any human connection.
