Also, some of the excess text has been removed, but the vast majority still remain.

When you say 'excess text', what do you mean? imgur errors?

I am in Papyrus right now and everything looks fine. Try Ctrl+Shift+R to reload without using the cache.

But how and/or why? What made it blockable?

Also, as I was learning basic HTML/CSS, I had also thought that perhaps the first project I try to test my coding prowess would be to make a theme for this place. I still need to learn more of the basics and then some more advance techniques, but I still might try doing that eventually.

Oh, with most Adblock-type things you can have it block particular page elements. This can come in handy if its blacklist is missing an ad source, or even if there's just something obnoxious in someone's signature. (of course in the latter case you can bring it up with the user or moderators as well)

Yeah, you can use it to block any image (or rather, the url of an image resource.) It just looked kind of stupid, so I put it on the chopping block.
I also blocked the stupid pikachus in mjack's signature.

I have to say though, I'm not very impressed with the naming scheme of the html structure. Like, both the quick reply box and forum sections on the index page are table.tablebg > tbody > tr > td.row1 (and row2)
There is nothing in that entire sequence that can be used to differentiate them.

edit: also, the signature divider is just extra text added at the start of the content instead of being it's own element.

I have endeavoured to make it suck slightly less by fixing the two things you complained about:
- the quickreply is now under form.quickreply > table.tablebg > ...
- the signature divider has its own element.

But yeah the HTML it generates is godawful. Or rather, it's vintage 2000-ish web design: tables in tables in tables, barely any semantic tagging, uuuuugly.

On a slightly-related note, eventually we want to move to the newly-released phpbb 3.1, which doesn't include subsilver2 themes (such as the ones we have now). Unforutnately there's a lot of work to be done in setting up the features currently implemented here, and between the front page, gatherer, and real life not a lot of time to do it.

(That's right: every time people complain that strikethrough flavor text or nested parentheses in reminder text don't work in our gatherer, it sucks up time that could be spent on getting real things done. )

Sometimes, people complain just to complain. Although the signature one actually bothered me a bit.
But what you're saying is that I shouldn't bother making a custom theme, because I'll just have to do it again when we migrate, isn't it?

When I try to edit my signature, I get a 500 Internal Servor Error:


I can reproduce this error any time I try to submit the form. I suspect it has something to do with the length of my signature.

I have been able to track down exactly what line of code is causing the error, but as of yet have no idea what the root cause is.

The issue comes from the image in your sig; because we set a maximum image width/height for pictures in signatures, when you submit a signature that contains images, the site tries to figure out how large that image is. To do this it uses PHP's getimagesize function. For some reason getimagesize fails horribly when you try this; both on the NGA server and on my computer it sits there for two minutes, then quietly kills the entire script. This is the "Internal Server Error" you're seeing.

I suspect that something is a little odd about the site where the image is hosted; can you try uploading it to a different server (e.g., imgur), changing the img url correspondingly, and see whether that helps?

this is happening again but different! now it's deleting it like before, but where before it was saying I had no characters, it instead tells me how many characters the message had. so... that's not super helpy. here's the text.

That is just debugging information I had it spit out last time. It didn't help, but it doesn't hurt, so I left it around.

Still no idea why this is happening.
