Brave Frontier is kinda cool. My bosses three kids all play it, so I decided to give it a shot. It's actually set up pretty well to make you want to do microtransactions, but doesn't require you to do it. Just about everything can be gained by grinding out the game, though it does have some massive time issues since it takes 10 minutes for 1 energy to replenish.

I've been playing a couple of good mobile games lately and wonder if maybe I should make a thread for mobile games? Examples include Ephemerid, Ascension, and the newest update of Monument Valley.

If it's on Android, there is a thread for you.

Here's the thing: 90% of the time I don't know if the games I play on my Apple devices are also available on Android, and I'm not really sure how to find out if they are.

You could always check the Google Play Store.

Also: Stop using Apple.

Is that what Android uses? I have like no experience with Android.

Also: If I had seen iOS 7 on the horizon, I would have gotten an Android tablet. It's been one step forward and two steps back for iOS for several years now. I even had to get a new music player with the latest update.

Yeah, Google owns just about everything these days. Android store, YouTube, etc.

Well, Monument Valley is an Android app as well. It is a marvelous mobile game, partially by virtue of being an entirely mobile game, but it does what it does very well.

Ascension is also an Android app. It's actually a mobile port of a physical deck-building game, but it's a great way to do the game for several reasons: rounds can be done quickly without worrying about fiddly bits, and... well, you can get the base game for free if you want to try it out. I like deckbuilding games.

It doesn't appear that Ephemerid has an Android app, but I think the Apple app was a port of the Steam version anyway, so I don't know. It's got an interesting papercraft aesthetic, some really cool 80s-style rock music, and really simplistic gameplay that doesn't appear to have a failure state. It's a great game for children.

I liked Ascension on the mobile, but I fail to see how it would be much fun as a live game.

I think it could work, especially since you could try to make deals with the people across the table "let me get [X] and I'll owe you one, etc.". But I think dealing with separating and shuffling the cards, any tokens it may use, pen and paper, and all, would get a little overwhelming in a physical product.

I've pretty well decided at this point that I'm going to get 80 Days soon, but I'm not entirely sure when.

Fallout Shelter has been pretty fun. The first day or two is really tough keeping up with resource demands without enough Dwellers to power the needed rooms.

I've heard that it eventually wears thin, but I haven't tried it.

I've been playing Loop over the past... day and a half? It's an extremely simplistic puzzle game that advertises itself as endless. I imagine it might just be to bind it to the aesthetics, but I'm eager to find out where the end of it actually is.

On a recommendation from TotalBiscuit, I have been playing a CCG-type of game called Earthcore. It's pretty interesting because it's one of those deceptively simple games that has a few, very simple, core mechanics, and then puts them together in a way that makes the gameplay complex and puzzling.

Here's a quick rundown: there's three elements (Earth, Water, and Fire) that beat each other in a strict rock-paper-scissors manner PLUS an element called Dust which loses to everything. You have monsters (most with abilities) which you play in the three slots on your side -- your opponent also has three slots. Whichever monster has the winning element in each column wins that column, destroying the opposing monster and dealing damage. Damage is dealt via a monster's risk, so that more powerful monsters also have a higher risk and you take more damage if they're defeated. It is literally a risk/reward system. There's a few more touches that balance things out, but that's the nitty-gritty.

I am so far loving it, because even long games only run about 5-6 minutes, and yet it's very puzzling/stimulating. It's actually scratching an itch of mine for games like Pokemon and maybe Magic?

Here's the official website. It's on both Google Play and Apple, and if you say I referred you we both get gold. Just input Kraigonus - 42 when you start up the game.
