It's dumb, maybe, but I take comfort from the way Beryl handles herself here. Namely, she doesn't get angry at the boy. She understands that he doesn't know any better, and forgives him without ever having been angry at him. And it's that capacity for understanding and forgiveness which has turned into the source of so much of her strength as she has sort of grown into herself over these last four or five stories.

Honestly, I was more saddened by the fact that she didn't make the sale. I'm with you on Beryl's reaction, and the childish "innocence" of the boy. But none of that helped Beryl with what she needed at that moment. So that's why it's the sale (or rather the lack thereof) that made me sad for Beryl.

Yeah, that too. :(

I suspect that, the way this eventually plays out, is that Beryl hangs on for as long as she can -- until the baker won't even give her stale bread, and until her suppliers cut her off -- before she does the only thing she can do: the turns to Astria.

And I suspect that this will not be the first time Astria has bailed her out. Astria owns the shop, after all, and she considers Beryl far too useful to allow Beryl to just starve to death. But I'm sure that she likes keeping Beryl in this carefully-calibrated state of poverty, where Beryl is dependent on her for her survival. And I'm sure that Astria knows exactly how to extract her pound of emotional flesh each time Beryl needs money.

And I think that's one of the reasons Beryl seemed like she had been living so close to the edge of survival when we first met her. I bet she would have missed fewer meals if she weren't afraid to turn to her sister. But I suspect that there are a lot of times when she chose to go hungry rather than have to go begging to Astria.

You know I knew Astria was awful but I never quite put together somehow how abusive this dynamic is like it's amazing that Beryl can even conceive of standing up to her sister...

Beryl is so strong.

The strength was always there, but she has come a long, long way of late, thanks in no small part to the people she has met along the way. To steal a sentiment from Nasperge, it's like I've been watching her grow, becoming herself, only more so, and her spirit has just been expanding to fill the space.

That has been one of the real joys of getting to write as much for Beryl as I have. :)

Quick question: Anybody remember which of these was voted in?

I put most of mine to vote. I think I left out one or two of them.

Orcish’s Six-Shooter (“The Vow,” “The Drop,” “The Cure,” “The Switch,” “The Admission,” and “The Point.”)

Barinellos’s “Predator,” “Memory,” “Dance,” “Reflection,” and “Ghosts.”

I think that's it.

Thanks. Couldn't remember what I'd done in particular, much less the reminder for anyone else.

So, a year ago, I wrote a little microstory for Mrs. OL on our anniversary. And, since she seemed to like that, I did it again this year.

And, once again, she tells me that I ought to go ahead and share it here, too. So, here it is! It's called "The Wish," and I hope it gets a smile.

The Wish

I kind of hate to say this, but my immediate reaction to the (very well written) story is to write something absolutely miserable.

My first thought was a crash of rhinos cresting the hill toward them. But I decided it was best not to mention that...

Oh, wait...

Eh, I wouldn't want to ruin their picnic.
But somewhere, one of my characters is probably going through some emotional hell to pay off the cosmic balance for this happiness.

...Sorry?

Sound effect for "I'm dying of cuteness."

What a sad story :( To think the nice sandwiches were never eaten :( :( :(

#priorities

I do love Beryl/Aloise fluff. I mean fluff in general is always nice but with them it always feels extra nice because of all they've gone through to get to this point.

Well, I guess that's better than if it was the sound effect for "I'm dying of vomitus anger!"

Still, while death-by-cuteness might be a preferable fate, I'd still rather avoid the dying thing altogether -- we'd miss you too much, CKY! :)

Kidding aside, though, thanks very much for reading!

@The Wish: Ahh, cute. Happy Anniversary to you both, Orcish! Here's to Dandelion wishes and Porch-dancing dreams!

Thank you, kindly! We finally had a weekend where neither of us had to work. The timing couldn't have been better. :)

I can just imagine Alessa leaning on a bar somewhere, rubbing her head, and grumbling: "Oh, for ****'s sake, this is so unfair..."

I am an unapologetic purveyor of fluff. :D

And, yeah, Aloise/Beryl fluff always gives me the warm fuzzies, for precisely that reason.

If it makes you feel any better, it was just our heroines who didn't consume the sandwiches. I suspect that there were some cute bunnies living in that meadow, and that they did get to eat the sandwiches. :)

Maybe they're the bunny-kittens from "Imagine a Room". They were frolicking with a litter of little meeplings and reticulated Singlox.
