I good to press on. We don't really have the power to stop the birdmen (they have a big speed advantage already and we're somewhat light on ranged weapons) and I really don't think they will do too much to the town. If we head back we will have wasted half a day just to get back to this same point. Might as well push on and deal with the birdman fall out when we get back.

I don't have much more to add unless someone else has more questions for Kitar. Squinty, when the party starts walking again, Kitar will fly much like he was doing before talking with the other aarakocras.

Still debating whether or not Hexion would step in frivolously.

I think realistically Luka would wait to see what happens with Iados, but I mean, I have darkvision too, I can totally cast Advance Moderate Plot if we want to move things along.

I already know exactly what I'm going to be doing. I just wanted to see if anyone else wanted to say anything on account of a bunch of people not posting for quite a while now.

How much distance does each square represent?
Do we choose then roll or roll then choose (I assume the former)?

Nope, it just determines turn order in combat. Technically we would have positioned ourselves before we knew combat was happening to avoid "what do you mean, the Rogue was totally standing next to the Battlemind," but that's difficult in PbP and we're all adults here.

Each square is 5x5 ft (unless a different scale is being used, but that's the standard.

Up to the DM, personally I think choosing first would be better since again we technically would've chosen before we even knew we needed to roll initiative.
