The name is pretty bad though. I prefer the Portuguese name, which would be translated as Time Sorcery.

The Short List wrote:
Tatami Galaxy
Black Lagoon
Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Mr. Lovecraft
Brynhildr in the Darkness
Deadman Wonderland
Gurren Lagann
Fate/stay night
Fate Zero
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Clannad After Story
K
Etotama
The Irregular at Magic High School
My Little Monster
Log Horizon
Nana

From that list I can suggest Tatami Galaxy, Black Lagoon & Fate Zero. Anime that I already saw and liked. I did't like Gurren Lagann, but if you like Fairy Tail, you will probably like it.

Isn't Fate Zero the sequel though? Or did you mean that series as a whole?

It is a prequel from Fate Stay Night, that I am yet to watch, but I will watch only Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, and skip the original.

The things you like are all over the place, so I'm just going to state my personal opinion on those I have watched.

In terms of public recognition; Tatami Galaxy, Fate/0, Madoka and Log Horizon rank pretty highly.

Okay, random question time.

If you could pick an arsenal of three anime to make people interested in the hobby with, which one would you choose? Keep in mind that your subjects will be convinced that it's not their cup of tea if the first one fails to leave an impact, and therefore only watch one of the options, of your choice. They're also not necessarily going to watch the whole thing, even if you really like where Hunter x Hunter is going in the later arcs.

Pfft, I was expecting more of a quip from you. I was trying to set you up bro...

I really like psychological kinds of shows. I can pass on the extreme action/explosion genre if you just give me a good plot twist and things to think about.
With that in mind...

Angel Beats: This is the most comedic of the three. It reminds me of Rugrats in that there's always a scheme for the gang to do. The overall theme of the show is character development, and they go about it with a mix of jokes, dark stories, and some fun and ridiculous hijinks. I loved the entire show.
Psycho Pass: As soon as I saw what this was about, I knew I needed to see it. This is the epitome of psychological thriller (maybe thriller is the wrong word), but the story is about them discovering the major weakness of a utopian culture (This is also why I loved Bioshock and :infinite). While I hated the main characters haircut, seriously she could've looked WAaaaaayy better with different hair, the characters were a believable bunch.
Tokyo Ghoul: I liked the division of this show. One of my nanowrimo stories was based on a similar theme of "who's the real monster?" Tokyo Ghoul explores the depths of segregation. It is arguably the darkest of the three, and undoubtedly the goriest, but the art style was amazing and they had some great fights and themes to explore. It helps that the main character literally had this world thrust upon him so he's learning about it along with the audience. Plus, I really loved the opening.

Honorable Mentions go to Spice and Wolf and Sword Art Online.
Spice and Wolf is extremely talky and I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea; SAO really explored the cause/effect of VR on the world. For me it was either Psycho Pass or this, and I think Psycho Pass had a better overall story (havinga developer lock people in a game for years while "acceptable" is silly when you think about it), even though I think SAO had better characters.

==xx==

I also forogt to add Mirai Nikki, and Accel World to my list of ones I liked.
I copied and pasted a list of stuff I'd watch with my friend when we get together. But he's not one for swears or gore or such.
I also forgot Attack on Titan, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood altogether (because he's already seen both of those)

EDIT: Yes they are in order too, I forgot to mention that.
Angel Beats is more generic anime, the other two get more to my particular tastes :p

Your personal taste is kind of irrelevant. You're going for highest success rate on numerous individuals.

I know, but it also determines which one I value higher. If I were to take my personal tastes out of it...

I know, that's why I started with Angel Beats.
Psycho Pass would still work, but I'd make it third.
I would replace Tokyo Ghoul with (from the list of what I've seen) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and put it at second.

Though FMA is a really close tie with Angel Beats. I'd probably start with Angel Beats because there was only one season of it (13 episodes I think), and plsu I thought FMA's final season was too dragged out and the whole series probably could've been four seasons instead of five.

Unrelated:
I'm purposefully taking a break for now, but I need to start Psycho Pass Season 2

I haven't thought about it myself too much, but two I would probably go with is Attack on Titan and Baccano! (Dub). Baccano is a seriously good story with genuinely good characters presented very nicely. I like Durarara!! better, but Baccano! is more safe and solid, and it has a good dub for people who are turned off from reading subtitles (or so I've heard.) I don't really like Attack on Titan all that much, but it has noteworthy mainstream appeal, and I can use it to target those people who find Baccano! too slow or difficult, or just want something edgy. For the third, I'm considering Jinrui as a more absurd and clever, comedy show, but I could also consider a romance drama like... Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso? I don't know, that one is hard. I can't come up with one I think is great. People are all over Toradora and AnoHana, but neither of them really ever spoke to me.

You really need to read the novel for Tora Dora.
I swore never to read vol 2+ or watch/read anything else related to it because I don't want to spoil the perfection that was vol 1.

While I like Attack on Titan, I found bits of it a little dry (I think). I also didn't like how they time jumped so far into the future in like one episode. Jack mentioned it in his review (or someone did) and it made it really difficult to truly like the characters. Plus, if you watch all of it in the span of a week, some of the plot twists aren't very plot twisty... :p My friend pointed that out after I complained about how one thing was soooooo obvious.

Hikaru no Go - A bit long, but it's fairly generic, being a coming-of-age story, and you don't actually need to know anything about Go to enjoy the series. Bonus points for following the original to a T.
Magi - This is a pretty good entry-level fantasy series, I think.
Black Lagoon - Gotta have a bit of mindbreak/violence somewhere.

I was going go add something Ghibli/Miyazaki here, but decided to stick to TV series.

I need to add Magi to my must see. I remembered that I heard good things about it, but I forgot to add it to my list.

If you like psychological anime, watch Death Note ( probably already watched) or Shin Sekai Yori.

Oh yeah. I loved Death Note until the end :(
I'm a huge advocate for black-aligned heroes, but in the second season he clearly lost his hero "status".

FUN FACT: Death Note was the first anime I've seriously watched (unless you count Princess Mononoke, I don't simply because it's a movie, but that was my true first). I watch Pokemon and Digimon before/after school when I was younger, but I wan't invested as much as I simply didn't want to do my homework.

I was not aware that anime fans were obsessed with steven universe, and the article failed to convince me that this is the case.
I don't think it actually put any effort towards doing so, despite its title.

I'm going to first echo Mown in that your tastes seem to be all over the place. I'm also going to just give you some general opinions on those of that list that I have seen:

  • Black Lagoon -- Good if you like James-Bond style summer blockbuster movies, but I didn't really enjoy it. Very hardboiled but I felt it lacked depth.
  • Deadman Wonderland -- I've said it before and I'll say it again: an interesting concept brought low by discount Shinji Ikari and THE LACK OF AN ENDING.
  • Gurren Lagann -- Two words: Galaxy. Shurikens. Gurren Lagann is a complete "turn off brain" type of show, but it's pretty great at what it does.
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica -- Very, very cool anime about deconstructing the magical girl show. I highly recommend this one.

For me this is a matter of showing someone who is removed from anime what anime can be, not necessarily what it usually is. Thus:
  • Spirited Away -- drama & fantasy
  • Serial Experiments Lain -- psychological & thought-provoking
  • Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt -- gag comedy & western-influenced

If you must insist on having full series instead of a movie (which I think I should have at least one movie if I'm going to turn an outsider on to anime), then substitute Spirited Away for Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

To quote Doug Walker: "The more effort in the show, the bigger the hit it is." That's about all I have to say on the matter.

Black Lagoon was a 7 grade show for me. I agree that characters are kind of flat, but the stories are not. What really bothered me was the amount of bad scenes. They are the worst aspect of it.

One positive point. I liked that there is an arc that reminds me of Musashi's story. The anime is also a critic to society, specially the japanese one.
