Amazing. I'd vote that into the Archive.

Thanks for the very kind words, CKY!

Yeah, once Denner gets over that silly poison, this should definitely be his next story arc.

Well, I can't speak for Denner, since I have a strong hunch that Raven has capital-P Plans for him. But, even if it's just a Suppose Prose sort of thing, I did very much enjoy trying to picture how Denner and Gale would interact. Because, at first blush, it seems like they might struggle to get along. But, the more I stopped to think about it, the more I started to believe that they actually have a lot in common, and they actually sort of complement each other.

Denner, for example, can have an unfortunate tendency to be a little over-honest with people, and seems to struggle with social cues at times. He also seems to benefit from the influence of strong, forceful people, who can help him to stiffen his own spine at times. Gale, meanwhile, is someone who respects people who say what they mean, and doesn't put much stock in social niceties -- she values honesty, loyalty, and competence. And she is very much a spine-stiffener, I think.

For her part, Gale is *struggling* to cope with life as a planeswalker, and to come to grips with how she fits into the larger scheme of the multiverse. Denner, on the other hand, can sort of navigate the multiverse with the same ease that Gale can steer a ship.

Which is why I think that, while I think their interactions would definitely include some rough edges, I actually think that they would get along after a fashion, and would have a real sort of respect for each other. Which is why I first envisioned Gale giving Denner a tattoo -- which, to be clear, is, for Gale, and extreme sign of respect.

And things sort of went from there. :)

@The Mark: Very nice scene. I like it a lot.

Well, I'm super glad that you liked it, Raven! Even though this is Suppose Prose, I hope I got Denner close to right. I was trying to give him that sort of speaking-before-thinking quality that he has, without it being a caricature. And I also tried to sort of project him forward in time, to a place where he has continued to develop the sort of empathy and maturity that he showed at the end of WotW and in "Pick Your Poison."

It's funny, but there are a number of people in our Archive who would probably like to meet Denner, if for no other reason than utilizing his particular gift. Ironically, at least one already has, but their information about one another passed by like ships in the night. Pity, really.

I'm sort of embarrassed about how long I had to think about this, before I figured out who you are talking about.

I had never made that connection before. But, now that you've pointed it out, it's fascinating...

Suppose: there were limits to RavenoftheBlack's cruelties :P

I read this, and then I immediately imagined all the combatants in "The Cruel Finale" lining-up to turn in their swords and axes and whatnot, and being issued with Nerf bats instead.

"You fight for glory," booms Chardis. "But, more importantly, everyone remember to play safe, okay?"

Suppose: there were limits to RavenoftheBlack's cruelties :P

A Warm Embrace

This is the most splendiferous thing in the history of the universe. :D

Seriously, it reminds me of the Futurama episode with the alternate universe where the outcome of coin flips is reversed. This is our Suppose Prose universe where, instead of Antine catching every bad break, he catches every good break. And it's amazing.

I love that, in both universes, Antine is equally clueless. :)

Glad the little guy finally got his hug.

Yeah, writing that scene made me very much like Antine. "That felt weird."

To be fair, I would deserve that avatar more than anyone else in the M:EM.

It's very true.

I should pick an avatar one of these days... I guess there's no way around the fact that I'm here for good.

I say you use the picture of Sam the Keeper, from the movie Werewolf.

I'm a bit late (reading Keeper's posts here is weird) but this thread has a lot of cool stuff.

[Suppose...] your characters were color-shifted one color clockwise on the color wheel.

:g: Sharaka: she'd be Daneera's scaly sister, basically.
:u::b: Elphimas: there might be something good here...
Spoiler

:r: Kalit: Marked at birth to be a natural berserker by a :r: Ikaristan demon, the diark priests discover his talent at young age and train to be the ultimate vanguard, brainwashing away his desire for a peaceful life. His sparks ignites when he's about to get swarmed by an overwhelming amount of foes, and he proceeds to life his life as a classic mercenary/D&D adventurer, always looking for stronger foes and using all the money he earns to acquire better equipment and to please his earthly desires. He's way happier than canon!Kalit, btw, and has a completely different name since Kalit is a title that means "Most Revered Assassin" and Mudroha is a priest-given name that means "Deadly Plague".
:b::r: Ungar: A Radkos paragon in all but name. Affiliated with all manners of demons and crazed revellers, he preaches that the only meaningful way to life a life is self-centered and unrepentant hedonism, fulfilling the wishes of those who agree with him and bringing havoc to everyone else. If he ever landed on Ravnica he'd be the Guildpact's nemesis.

I was always very happy with this thread.

And yeah, it's really too bad Keeper's not around here anymore.

It's also, to speak frankly, annoying to me that Keeper didn't drop the Watchwolf avatar before vanishing. It's particularly annoying when old conversations wind up being between Keeper and myself, and I get confused about who is saying what.

[Suppose...] your characters were color-shifted one color clockwise on the color wheel.

:g: Sharaka: she'd be Daneera's scaly sister, basically.

To be fair, I think Daneera and Sharaka would get along well even with their current color alignment, but yeah, these two would make a formidable pair of Forest Avengers.

:u::b: Elphimas: there might be something good here...
Spoiler

Yeah, that's a pretty good story hook. Potentially very creepy, depending on how its done, but good.

* * *

I haven't thought about the color-shifting one in a while, but I do have a number of characters who have come along since I made that prompt, so I may have to revisit that at some point. A Orida Vise, for instance, would probably be pretty much the same, although probably not quite so quiet and reserved...

:paranoid:

Yep, I get that.

As you say, Sharaka already has strong enough opinions about slavery and invasions to understand Daneera's defense of Nature, and they're both "uncivilized" enough to get along nicely from the start; but if I had to replace Sharaka's very :r: relationship with destruction and self-destruction* I'm not sure that they'd be different enough to be interesting. With :w:-Daneera, perhaps?

*And replace it with what, by the way? MtG's wobbly characterization of non-naturalistic, :g:-related ideals and personalities are pretty infamous :V

[Meet the Puppeteer.]

Yeah, that's a pretty good story hook. Potentially very creepy, depending on how its done, but good.

If I turned that idea into writing I would totally jump on the Creep Train. The Puppeteer would have Elphimas' canon weirdness, plus the disturbing ability to break minds to rebuild them as they see fit. Imagine meeting a determined and good-natured friend and noticing they're suddenly acting as the stereotype of the Knight in Shining Armor... the Puppeteer could be far more discreet than that (when they care enough to make an effort) but there is a lot of potential for brainwash-related horror and identity mind-screws. Especially in their early years, when they make "honest" mistakes and accidentally destroy minds for good.

Ha!

To be honest she would have a slightly different ancient-artifact-turned-weapon, probably, but keeping or replacing the death-talking seems a hard choice to me

Suppose...

Rising Heat

This also indirectly describes what happened in canon after Corruption's ending.

@Huey: Neat. I like the effect of showing this through Nive's point of view, and it's always good to see people like Sophron getting what they deserve.

I've thought on the matter, since I never did this to start with.
But honestly, the sheer number of characters I have is what makes me trepidatious about the undertaking.
I really need to jettison some cargo, I think.

But I could probably do a few targeted strikes.
Like the horrifying idea of a Zhiran.

I always thought the Shifter was at least :r::g: due to his... well... shifting.

Maybe they would... like... switch roles?

If we imagine their conflict as an asymmetric board game a la Netrunner, the Duchess seem to be the one building defenses in preparation of the Shifter's machinations. With a :g: Shifter and a :u::b: Duchess, I can picture the Shifter trying to bolster and secure the keystones of the planes' stability and prosperity, while the Duchess uses her agents to locate them and steal/destroy them to gain more power, leaving desolate and hopeless planes behind. While the Shifter almost seems to have a positive role now (like the "peace" on the planes under the Duchess' control make her seem the best alternative of the two when compared to the bloodbaths the Shifter provokes) he would arbitrarily choose how his chosen plane should "grow" in order to be more defensible and he would manipulate the very nature of the plane to turn his vision into reality.

As it stands now, his goal is total anarchy and ultimately, extinction, while his purpose is basically just to stave off boredom. I imagine what would change in their dynamic would be that his viewpoint and lengths would change. Rather than sowing chaos for the hell of it, he's be doing it specifically as an anti-civilization movement.
Meanwhile, similarly, a Duchess would be more direct at seizing power and less about influencing systematic corruption. She wouldn't be searching for an all consuming status quo, but likely a much wider grab at personal power, likely yielding a more proactive use of it as well.

Maybe I should have gone counter-clockwise...

Maybe!

...maybe not?

(the events before Sharaka talks to Hisk are all canon)
