Not really free, but I like to award EXP for good roleplay, and everyone has been participating really well. I also know how these games can drag, so I thought this would be a good incentive to get people to post and interact with the world. You particularly have been working hard on your roleplay and interacting with the townspeople, even if they're not appreciating you, lol.

I feel this might become a pattern for Kitar :P

Squinty, do we know anything about the region we are, like from maps or memory? If not, can I roll history and/or survival to recall some info?

Honestly, I would show you the map, but it also notes every plot point and specific location for this adventure. If you want to try for some rolls, I can describe it to the best of my ability.

@fel - To the best of my knowledge, you aren't aware Kaylessa is the one who gave the info. You haven't spoken to her, and I don't believe that Luka said she was the one who told you all. Is there a reason Kitar asks her so pointedly?

Okee dokee. I do wanna respond to it, and it's fine if Kitar inferred she was the one, but I just wanted to make sure that was the intent.

Squinty, can I reach Lance Rock before nightfall if I fly there at full speed? Is this an info you can share?

50 feet per round, a round is 6 seconds, so.... 500 feet per minute.

5280 feet in a mile, so.... you move at about 10.5 miles per hour.

The destination is approximately 10 miles as far as you know, so assuming you get lucky, and it's around 2 pm right now, you could make it out there and back in just over 2 hours assuming you go the exact right way. Now, all of that is simply going off the information given to you by an NPC.

There's also the thing about moving at top speed constantly. According to Google, the average human walk speed is 3.1 miles per hour, and you're attempting to do more than three times that for two hours straight. Personally, I'd feel like you'd be going slower than the max 50 feet per round since you're aiming for sustained travel, so perhaps three to four hours.

Then you're going to have to search for the area, which, depending on information given could account for several more hours, especially since you have no details of what this rock formation looks like, and even with a verbal description, things will look drastically different from an aerial view than the descriptions given from a ground view.

So, if you'd like to go for it and search, I'll give you two options:

(1) Stay in Red Larch.

(2) Roll a percentile (all assuming you leave now, approximately 2 pm).

  • 81 - 100: You find what you're looking for quickly and return by 5:30 pm (dusk just setting in)
  • 61 - 80: You find what you're looking for and return by 7:00 pm (twilight has fallen)
  • 41 - 60: You find what you're looking for and return by 12:00 am due to difficulty in low light (midnight)
  • 21 - 40: You do not find what you're looking for and return by 2:00 am due to exhaustion and difficulty in low light (pitch black)
  • 01 - 20: You do not find what you're looking for and are stuck in the woods until dawn breaks

Now, things would go differently with more eyes, and those percentiles aren't accounting for potential attacks that you may encounter on your own. But, with sketchy directions and only a loose idea of what you're looking for, that's what I can offer you, and that's a whole hell of a lot more info on choice than I'd usually give a player. But, I've been told I can be hard on players, so this is the most fair chance I'll give you.

50 feet per round, a round is 6 seconds, so.... 500 feet per minute.

Technically he could take the Dash action every round to move double that (Endurance and such notwithstanding).
Although actually I think your math might be slightly off, but it sort of works out anyway.
500*60=30,000, 30k/5280 ~=5.5, 5.5*2=11.

Though for what it's worth the DMG says that a griffon with a fly speed of 80 would travel at 8 miles per hour, and the only thing it mentions about exhaustion is that they have to rest 1 hour for every 3 hours traveled and can only fly for a max of 9 hours a day. [/ruleslawyering] :P

Might have to considering that in internet service terms, Thursday means February.

Griffins also aren't armored, carrying weapons, etc.

True, but they're carrying adventurers, so...

I mean, not trying to be argumentative or anything, just figured I should mention that there was a section on it, especially if overland flight becomes a common thing for us.

My calculations were based on 6 second rounds, perhaps D&D 5E is based on 12 second rounds instead, which would have made it accurate (more or less) to what Wizards is saying. I dunno, I'm trying to find a fair estimate to use, but it's not easy.

And I'm not really sure the Griffin is carrying an adventurer for the 80 feet/round. Usually, a medium hero has a base land speed of 30 ft/rnd, but when encumbered by heavy armor, it usually drops to 20 ft/rnd. I'm guessing the speed of the Griffin listed is an unencumbered version, because they can't tell what race of hero you may be using. A Halfling would slow the Griffin less than a large Orc. Well, that's my thoughts...

Nah, they still use six second rounds, but I think they abstract overland travel a bit for similar reasons (like you said, there's a difference between double moving dashing every turn in a 2 minute fight, and doing that continuously for 2 hours, plus potentially getting lost or waylaid etc.).

As for the Griffon it was specifically referring to travel speed via air with a flying mount. "Thus, characters mounted on griffons (which have a flying speed of 80 feet) can travel at 8 miles per hour, covering 72 miles over 9 hours with two 1-hour-long rests over the course of the day."

But yeah, honestly I think what you went with is fine, I know it's hard to convey tone in text format, so just to reiterate not trying to pull any "Actually according to page 14, subsection b, paragraph 3," BS (I tend to be pretty chill about pretty much everything), just trying to provide a helpful point of reference, but regardless in D&D the only winner is fun, and I'm enjoying the campaign, so no worries.

I need that BS, though, because I'm working off of Pathfinder knowledge. I need to know when I'm flat out wrong about how the system works.
