To recap, I drafted all of the green morphs I could and supplemented those with a with blue morphs, but ended with an almost entirely green pool. I'm really open to anything going forward, but considering the weakness of green in FTF, I'd like to be an enemy color so I at least have access to one of the good multicolored commons.
p2p1 - I've heard a lot of varying opinions on
Assault Formation. It's really odd; some people think it's a bomb, some people think it's unplayable. I lean closer to the former opinion. You don't need a bunch of turtles to take advantage of it. The group pumping is what's really killer. All your morphs swing in for a potential 3 which absolutely messes with the opponent's blocks, and if you're at six mana, it becomes atrocious. Bowmasters is the closest consideration for me, but it lacks the raw power that
Formation provides. Wish I'd taken that
Sidisi's Faithful now! I went back an edited p1p10 from Winds to Sight; I wouldn't normally do this, but considering I misremembered Winds, I wanted to give a more faithful reproduction of my opinion on the pick. With Formation and Sight both in the pool now, something saucy is brewing.
p2p2 - Vision, Aven, and Elk Herd are what I'm looking at. Visions is pretty vicious in my experience, but you really wanna build around it from the get go, and all I have for returning are pump spells. Aven is a nice bit of card advantage, but it's not better enough than
Herd for me to take it here. I've never played with the Skeleton, though I imagine it's a fine card that would happily support my minor morph theme.
p2p3 - Pretty easy
Epic Confrontation. I'll be happy to scoop up an on-color dragon should one table.
p2p4 - Hmmm... Interceptor is a solid card, but I'm not married to the three blue cards I have thus far. The other interesting option is
Atarka Pummeler, which is big and mean and scary. I don't think
Interceptor is that much worse if at all, and I like the morph theme that's built up, so I'm gonna take it rather than sway to red. (Note: Morph by itself is a theme. Multiple morphs making blocking tough and allow you to play on the opponent's turn. I'll be looking for some instant to compliment all of this with.)
p2p5 - Beastbreaker or Drowner. I'm not really that concerned with having 2-drops in this deck. I'm not looking to curve out; I'm looking to build up my mana base and take advantage of my morphs. I definitely want some 2-drops, but they feel very replaceable considering the build of the deck so far. Meanwhile,
Drowner is exactly what I want: a route to digging for the right card and a big butt for the enchantments. And how good is it with Raptor? You can sac Raptor to it or dump Raptor with the digging. Too good.
p2p6 - There's an argument for Spellfist or Faithful, but like I just said, I'm not so worried about the bottom of my curve and will fill it with whatever I find later. I'd rather take a solid beater like
Bowmaster, especially since it pairs with everything the deck is about thus far. Don't get me wrong; I definitely want some of these dorks. Just not bad enough to take here.
p2p7 - I don't really want another Scribe. I'm gonna take the
Sunstriker instead. It's somewhat of a hate draft, but I actually wouldn't mind splashing it into the deck should the opportunity/need arise, especially since I have multiple pump spells already.
p2p8 - A ton of 5-drops isn't my ultimate plan, but one
Contradict definitely is. I'm snapping up every
Whisperer of the Wilds I see next pack.
p2p9 -
Skywise Teachings doesn't get the love it deserves. The blue decks tend to have more creatures in this format than in others, so I completely get it, but man, this thing is so good in
. Anyway, it does look interesting here. I currently have two
Tread Upons, one
Ojutai's Breath, one
Epic Confrontation, and one
Assault Formation that all trigger it reasonably. And token producers are REALLY good with Formation. When I first looked at this pack, I thought I was snapping up Spellfist easily since I'd been neglecting my 2-drops the whole time. But I'm already looking to play a mana-heavy deck, and this is a good mana-heavy card. I think I'm gonna take it.
Teachings, get into my pool.
p2p10 - Aegis or Calm are gonna be the most detrimental, and I think the latter gets more love, so I'm hating
Calm.
p2p11 - Booo. I wanted a different dragon. I'm probably not gonna maindeck that
Carp, but with Formation and Sight, I could.
p2p12 -
Updraft Elemental might not make the deck, but it really has the right stats for a lot of what's happening in this deck. I absolutely expect it to come out of the sideboard in some matches.
p2p13 -
PAIN!!!!!Some more good support for my initial goals. Blue took over a bit, but that's to be expected since we passed a few good green cards. From this last pack, I'm hoping to get some green ramp, a few removal spells, and a foil Ugin.
